Thank you both for your service, I was in hospital with an ex marine so we had time to talk, I was amazed at how hard the training was and how brutal. The disgrace is how our government treat servicemen (deliberately non woke) when they leave.
Great tip at 9 minutes 10 seconds summed up in a single line - Embrace the suck. Then, the more you do it, the more comfortable you get with it, and the more you can accept it and understand it, the more you can survive it.
Great talk say it as it is or was , even now both of you have that inner strength of mind to walk your path of life knowing that nobody said life would be easy, head down and just get on we it, thank you gentlemen for your service, take care .
I did like how you got across the mental side of doing something. From my experience on a physical course the mental strength of someone is just as important if not more important then physical strength. I have seen fit strong guys not pass a course where I would say guys not as fit passing the course because they are mentally stronger, pushing themselves beyond what you would think is possible.
You don’t really need authority in the forces. Self discipline is more effective rather than waiting to be told what to do. Living above the line, doing the right thing even when no one is watching you.
You do need authority unfortunately. Special Forces attract highly motivated individuals who want to do the job well. The green army has a lot of people who are good at what they do, they just need a little nudge in the right direction now and again. And a lot of idle fuckers who work well when supervised
Unbelievable...it's crazy I love hearing about SF it's facinates me mind blowing stuff.. always wanted too go on selection but got medical discharged after Herrick 16
Excellent interview Simon, I really enjoyed watching this. A great way to fill a rainy September Sunday afternoon. It was good to hear Richie's perspective on the military. I'd be very interested to see a follow up regarding more in depth how he got on upon leaving the SBS and starting the distillery from scratch. Overall top notch content and I think the sound and lighting for the video was very professional. Looking forward to future content. All the best mate👍
“Is that the military or is that just life” a problem for a lot of guys in the military is they join straight from school and have no experience if anything else. So you don’t have anything to judge it by
There's a common theme on all this interviews as to why these lads ended up on selection, not the same for all but there is a trend. The commando brigade being completely miss used in Afghanistan, not being deployed in a commando raiding capacity in order to plug "on the ground" man power gaps. It seems as if the RM would have been deployed in the manner in which they were intended ( more focused, intel led raids on targets with slightly less value than what uksf would go for) then these highly motivated lads would have been happy with that.
Completely. I went on selection and failed then left because I didnt want to be mine dancing on the next herricks. I was in 42. Which also started the DS ego trips on course. Where large amounts of manpower who passed the hills failed first day in the jungle under canopy. They just walked until people dropped. day 1 and day 2. All because the DS were trying to thin the ranks not by anything meaningful. Rather just pushing people to near death. Guys who went down massively on my course, returned next course and passed flying colours. No issued n the same phase. ALso mentioning how it was totally different. As the DS got a dressing down by the training officer for hereford. After that i never returned as I thought that was how they all were.
@MichaelCoyne-ol8ec the UK has been fucked up for a while in how it uses units and Hereford is massively to blame for some it, with it's work hording. The US has got it right and delivers more value to the tax payer. Anyway, things seem to be changing with the corps taking on a special ops role (not SF) and being put under natos sof command. Hopefully will get used for what it always was meant for in the next conflicts.
@@Barrybud2816 Difficult to not be a bit pissed off these days. With the, What if quezzies. Personally I think the corps supresses and doesnt nurture unique manpower. Or abilities. Which for me, was the absolutely wrong decision to join. Getting pinged and being the pressed man really is not good. Loads of blokes simply wanted to be General duties Marine. Even in SB, blokes leave because its turbo websters. I know loads of blokes who left because it was simply not like Hereford. The days of TF-42 stopped and then it went to a more shit 333 role of mentoring.
@MichaelCoyne-ol8ec I think there's some moves to change this mate but it's not a quick fix. Fcf, there's a lot of moaning about because all the ultimate Bootneck warrior sprogs want everything right now so they moan and say it's not working, when in reality it only actually officially started in 2021 and was slated to take 10 years to get the corps where it wanted to be and even that time scale depends on funding so may take longer ! For all the lads moaning I know the same amount or more who are made up with fcf and the chances they're getting. The corps did sell it's self short for a while, why on god's earth it spent so long just doing what the infantry do I don't know, absolute waste and it's only changed the last 2 / 3 years (right when we are not at war!). With the current removal of standards on the infantry course the mod basically seems to be turning the paras, rangers and corps into the only real deployable options for real jobs that aren't for uksf, again, why wasn't it like this all along. Like I said, the US has it right in terms of using units and delivering service to tax payer, the UK has had it wrong until recently and needs to continue. Like you've pointed out though, this H having the monopoly on everything needs to stop, it's not good for anyone, not even them when they're fucking off because of being over worked !
@@MichaelCoyne-ol8ec totally get that. They're trying to resolve it now with fcf. I know loads of lads are moaning about fcf as they want everything right now. But to be fair, it was getting spoken about in 2017 but only actually started in 2021 and was planned to take 10 years to get the corps to where it wanted to be (I think it will take longer for money reasons). For all the lads moaning I know an equal amount that are made up with the opportunity they're being afforded. The corps is going in the right direction, particularly given the downfall of expectations and standards within the infantry. There is now the biggest distinction there has ever been and always should have been, it needs to continue with this though. People with the power need to step in and remove some of the jobs from h, there's plenty that don't need a unit at Thier level to do and can be given to the corps, paras, rangers. It's not good for anyone the way they monopolise everything, it's not even good for them !

I’ve been suicidal since I was a kid, about 9 I think. I’m 26 now and even though I’ve relentlessly pursued healing and professional help yet I still haven’t managed to shake it off. Every day I’m forced to grab my mind by the throat and tell it to feel/do what I tell it, just so I can be productive and do what I need to for the day. It’s built some considerable mental strength and discipline over the years, I’ve learned to love the fight and challenge my body/mind with things it thinks it doesn’t want to do. I’d be quite keen to see how I’d cope in this marine training and how far I’d be able to push myself.
