    Love this effort. Couple things that may have been noted in the comments, but I didn’t see them. Physiologically, there are some folks who possess a different capacity in terms of O2 processing (ML O2/kg of body weight). That accounts for the ability to not only provide O2 to the muscles demanding it but it directly relates to the lactic acid buildup you experienced. Lactic Acid tolerance is something that the top cyclists have at different levels as well and it could also be a big part of their training (callousing effect). The elite endurance athletes have the capacity to continue to perform well at Lactic Acid levels other folk’s muscles couldn’t continue to contract. (your comment that your aerobic capacity was ok but you just couldn’t continue). Another factor that may give you a boost and I didn’t see it mentioned, what Is the room temperature where you were peddling and did you have a cooling fan to help regulate your body heat with in the room temperature? There is a considerable load on the cardiovascular system when the body needs to shunt blood to the skin to aid in cooling. Climbs in France are often very cold at a pretty steady 30+kmh and while we often think of that as miserable, the benefit is mainly advantageous to the working muscles as they aren’t sharing blood with the body’s cooling mechanism. So, Genetic VO2 capacity, unbelievable reps of elite training, elevated lactic acid tolerance levels, mental toughness to deal with discomfort most simply would not endure…
    Your video illustrates nicely the relative impact of those physiological elements. I didn’t consider the technical advantage of their equipment or the sophisticated nutritional or supplemental plans impact* Really enjoyed the exercise

      Steroids 😂😂 Lance was also world class as a kid with no money, before drugs. Check him out against other world class triathletes before he switched to cycling. Genetic freak to start with. Crazy mentality too. Yes they were taking drugs in quantities seen only on a motley crue tour, but there was a sh!t ton of training too

  • @shepshape2585
    @shepshape2585 2 роки тому +28

    But it's not just their training, it's genetics (and at least in Armstrong's case, a matter of EPO and blood transfusions and a lot of other illegal help). These guys have genes that give them the ability to flush lactate more quickly, they have more red blood cells, they are just more gifted genetically than the average person. Mere mortals could train 15 hours per week from the age of 15 and never come close. Not to mention their VO2 max, their heart rates, all things that keep most of us having to settle for local group rides and maybe the occasional road race or crit.

    Very nice video and a way to feature critical power. Lance is a hard bar to compare too. On one hand, doping or not, he set an unreal standard for what the human body could attain. On the other, we do not know what lance could do alone. I suspect it is not far from the enhanced performances, though.

    @dupondavignon869 Рік тому

    If you want a fair comparison, you should ingest all drugs they take, and use an electric bike (at least for Armstrong's).
    And don't forget one thing: drugs don't just make them faster during the race, they make them stronger over the years, by allowing them to train harder, longer, and compete in (finish) events that they might not have finished if running on clean water. These completed races also contribute to making them stronger.
    I stopped putting the pros on a pedestal a long time ago, especially after seeing their level when not on a drip. Good level, but nothing superhuman as you can see in competitions.

    You are a bit wrong when saying that w/kg is the true measure when you go up the mountains. W/kg is the comparable measure in any type of terrain. Watts by themselves don't matter when you comparing riders with different weights.

    • @MitchBoyer
      @MitchBoyer  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! Raw power and aerodynamics are a bit more important than w/kg on the flats-that’s why sprinters tend to have bigger builds than climbers, but you are right, a rider’s w/kg is important almost everywhere, not just on climbs.

    • @g33m33
      @g33m33 2 роки тому

      @@MitchBoyer Raw power is important for sprinters because they don't need to output that kind of power for a very long time. Other types of riders tend to have a higher w/kg output on longer efforts. Sprinters are usually only able to reach the finish line at the front in the flat stages since that is the only circumstance where the speed is fast enough to be able to take full advantage of drafting and not having the weight disadvantage of having to fight against gravity much more than their lighter fellows in the climbs.
      I think that you could have sustained a bit longer with a higher cadence but also Lance used to use that low cadence style so it's a very accurate representation of him.

      Yep! Exactly why w/kg is more important on hills than watts alone. Definitely harder to go up hill when you weigh more.

    To put it another way... Lance Armstrong would need to weigh 143kg (500W / 3.5 WpKG) to be as slow as you!
    An interesting race would be you against a virtual Lance, where Lance Armstrong is giving another Lance Armstrong a backie -- as you should be slightly ahead in theory then -- but then again maybe not if it's the final 50km of a 150km race :)
    The good news though is that if Lance Armstrong was on Jupiter (2.53x gravity) you'd definitely beat him though

    Why don’t you take the drugs that LA did do some training and let see if you can match his power at 30 minutes.
    That would be very interesting in the name of science, now that we have the baseline that you can’t really do it.
    It will finally end the discussion of everyone can do what LA did if you just take his drugs.

    Well don't forget that all the rider use drogue to be better.

    Well.... if you are not on drugs, it is only logical you can't ride that fast.

    One is a cheater and hopefully the other doesn’t go on Oprah in the future. First you can’t duplicate a LA ride, Dr Ferrari is out of business.

    Stop talking about Lance Armstrong. It’s like promoting doping, you can do better

      Also agree.. what’s more impressive - 7w/kg when you’re drunk on PED’s or 6.5w/kg which the current pros do.. I tend to believe Jai Handley is clean who regularly does 6.5w/kg for 20mins or more..

      Thanks for watching and holding me to a high standard 🙏 I definitely don’t wanna promote doping and probably should’ve included a section in the video clarifying that point. I’ll have to think of ways to approach it better next time. To me, a normal person, the 6.3 w/kg that Pogacar puts out is just as insane as the 7 w/kg. They both feel impossible 😱

      I disagree! Thank you Mitch for including Lance! It’s amazing to see what Pogacar can do and using Lance’s numbers helped set a “What’s physically possible but not attainable” limit.

      Dumb take. You might as well not talk about any sports or athlete. Everyone at the top in any sport is roided to the gills.
