So I had an invite up north to go to a bridge with some heavy finds that people could not get out. What I found left me totally gobsmacked. The one thing I'd been searching for 5 years to find and today I got it. Bucket list COMPLETE. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to find one but I guess today was my day. Join me on my journey to see what I found.

Great find and excellent teamwork. One thing that might help to date the cannon is the small plinth with the pan for fine powder that ignites the charge through the small hole down to the main charge for firing the cannon. If that plinth has been designed to accept a flintlock mechanism, which I think is a possibility, then this will help to date the canon to the period from when flintlocks were introduced on ships' cannons. The advantages of the flintlock were that it was activated by a cord so the gunner could stand well clear of the imminent gun recoil and also the firing of the canon could be made at a precise moment. This was important because when a ship rolled with the action of the sea the pitch of the cannon was always changing so a shot fired in the right direction might fire high or low depending on the pitch of the barrel. Before the introduction of flintlocks the gun was fired using a linstock; a stick with a smouldering fuse/cord on the end. The smouldering end was applied to the powder in the pan to ignite the charge. Using a linstock it was more difficult to fire the canon at the exact moment judged appropriate by the gunner. I am looking forward to hearing the results of your research into this historic find.

Very well done indeed. Great care is needed for proper restoration, no hammers, no sharp points, no grinders, just gentle persuasion will pay off, but it will take a long time. Oil is really good for Ferrous metals, as it seals the iron from Oxygen, which will make the flakes burst off.

What a find , good thing Rusty was there with the boat , that saved the day . Also all the others who were there to pull it enough to it up to the boat .
