Evening gents, I believe that the sword handles you found are actually off cuts of railway track. The rippled burr on the one face is caused by flame cutting.

That saves me writing the same thing. Yes it's when they've had to trim a rail to the correct length.

@@philyew3617 I agree. The profile looked like a piece cut off the track rail and the grooves looked like a cutting torch was used. I know nothing about this stuff, but was guessing. USA

It’s so great seeing the family back on the canals again. Dad’s looking good after his sad ordeal. Mum’s back behind the camera and of course there’s the world famous George.

At 2:45 that looks like a slice of railroad track, I have one I found in my grandfather's old metal working tools. It was common back in the 50's to use them as small homemade anvils around here.

So happy to see you back, not knowing what happened to your Dad, it's wonderful he is well. May God bless all of you. Edited:on one of your videos your dad found a double cannon ball. I have one that I found here across the pond, I thought it was a weight lifting device.. hence..it was checked out with a historical society and found to be a double cannon ball.. thanks to you both, I learned it was worth a good pound/ dollar.

“I don’t know what it is but I like it!” How many times have I thought that to myself when I’ve been rummaging in scrapyards, or just poking around on the beach at low tide!!? It’s a disease, but it gives you a lot to talk about. Enjoy yourselves, you’re doing a great job.

The long thing with 4 holes @ about 20 minutes is called a Fishplate. It's purpose is to join 2 track lengths together with through bolts. There would be a Fishplate on each side if the rail, so the rail sections are sandwiched between. The flat item with the recess and 2 bolt holes is called a bed plate or pedestal, which spreads the weight of the track over a large area of the sleepers. These are bolted down to the sleepers with long bolts. They are used in conjunction with those curly springs, which are called Pandrol clips. The Pandrol clips keep the rails clamped down hard to the bed plate.

    Hi George and Mike!
I so happen to be a railway enthusiast. I enjoy railroads/railways from around the world even though I'm from across the pond. You found some neat stuff.
The heavy curled metal rings are Pantrol clips. They are used to hold the track to the sleeper using that big screw-bolt. The railway workers use a special machine to install those unlike the olden days when a gang of trackworkers using shovels, pick axes and mallets to clip the rails to the sleepers. Today, the process is even automated more with big rolling machines that not only place the clips, but also screw the track into place. Following behind are other machines that will ballast the track (the stones), and align the track to ensure smooth running.
The big flat metal plate with the ridges on either side is used under the rails as they clip to the sleepers. A thinner piece of heavy steel with about 4-holes in it, that would be a fishplate. These are used to hold the rails together when they butt up against the ends.
That big T-shaped piece of iron is a cut off piece of rail. The trackworkers must've trimmed a piece of rail to make the rails fit together not unlike a model railway except much bigger. The smaller piece of rail is most likely from the guide rails used on bridges. These are smaller weight rails that are placed inside the track to catch a train and prevent it from going off a bridge. (They don't always work but mostly do!).
That handle-thing appears to be a turnbuckle. On your railways, you use chains to link the rolling stock (wagons and coaches) together. There is a turnbuckle to tighten the connection to ensure that the coaches and wagons are tight against the buffers between them. Here in the US and Canada, we use a different coupling system that uses big hooks that connect together. They are actually much safer than the chains.

7:42 Looks like a some sort of control handle - the blobby end - with a square drive to engage in a mechanism. Off an old lathe or machine tool of some kind.... perhaps. Bit of a wild guess, to be honest. 🤔 It would seem that the railway maintenance people have a few questions to answer, judging by the amount of presumably scrap stuff that has been just dumped in the river.

The long plate with the Four holes on are Fish plates, so called because they have oval holes to allow for track expansion in hot weather to prevent buckling, they are mobile connections that move with the track.
Those track chairs are modern ones, as the older types had Four holes.

8:22 the flat oval thing is a modern rail bed used to fix the rail to the sleeper. You screw rhe bed to the sleeper using the bolt screws you found. Then you lay the rail on top along the groove then you use the many curly ties you found to cinch the rail to the bed.
The reason you found so many ties in the canal and why some of them are short is because these are old ones that have been swapped out, some snapping in the process and thrown into the canal by naughty workers rather than lugged home!
