Canon have released an incredibly affordable 50mm f/1.8 lens to its RF mount line of lenses. This lens is shockingly good considering its low price point. In this video, we'll look at some sample images, some MTF data and I'll show you exactly why this is the lens that every photographer should have in their bag.

i have no intention to ever do photography but man this guy's speech is flowing
He makes great videos, no doubt about that.
I’ve been really loving this one. It’s been years since I’ve had a 50mm lens, and this one just knocks its out of the park.
Can’t wait to get mine!
Thanks for a good video. I just ordered this lense to use on my EOS RP, which is also on its way. With average hobbyist photographers like my self, i think all the "short comings" of this lense will never be an issue and consider this one of the best buy you can make in the low end of the scale.
The aspheric element is described by Canon as PMo which is Presision Moulded (glass) optics.
I’ve got this lens for my Canon R8. A feather light combo to carry and shoot all day. Thank you for a very informative review.
I rented R8 and this lens last year and I had exactly exactly the same feeling, so small so light and such amazing quality that you always want to have it in your bag 24/7!!! I think this lens and this combo alone, made me feel in love with the RF camera while I was about to switch to Sony because I was so jealous to see how friends had such sharp images with relatively low prices 3rd party lenses. But since I have rented the R8 and this lens I'm like ok I am happy with Canon again while I was getting very very frustrated!
I’m excited for it. Got it as a compact lens with my RP for family, casual and travel shooting. Save my R6 and other lenses for client and professional work. It’s been great so far for the money!
Have you used it on your R6. I want a lightweight 50mm for hybrid work.
@@markshirley01 Yes, I have. It feels nice on the R6 also. I don't shoot video so can't speak for that.
@@mjztx thanks - I do shoot video. The 50 is a lens I wouldn't use a lot maybe a detail shot or a person from a distance.
I just purchased this lens, after spending lots of money on an 85mm and a 100mm. This lens has changed my photography for the better!
The new nifty fifty. Best starting lens you can buy.
I have an old EOS and a bunch of lenses, and I just bought the r100 on a whim. I am enjoying it with my EF lenses, and I am now ordering an RF 50 mm and this video has been very helpful.
Some of my favorite days in the past were when I took my camera out with a 50 mm lens. It's perfect for so many everyday normal human scale photography situations.
Hi. I got a r100 recently. I intend to buy RF50mm lens sometime soon. I'm glad that it works well with r100. This is what I want to hear from someone who owns r100 and uses 50mm lens.
Thank you for your thoughts on this lens and not forgetting the video side ! I'd love to hear your opinion on the 35mm f1.8 and the 85 f2 as well :)
Pre ordered it. Have it for 4 weeks now and I really like it. But the default lens on my R remains the RF 35. But as you said the rf 50 is a no brainer. I don't know any reason for not getting it. Even if you have the rf 24-70 and the 50 1.2 it still makes sense to have to 1.8 if you want to pack light.
Yes you right... it is my affordable Prime Trinity... for my R6
RF35 F1.8
RF50 F1.8
RF85 F2.0
Then i has the RF 24-70 F2.8 and now save Money for the RF70-200 F2.8... these are all my Lenses I want...;-)
Merry Xmas from Germany, thanks for your Video...
How does the RF50 1.8 image quality compare to the RF35 1.8?
@@ingo2835 I am happy with that... but I guess i am not a pixel peeper...I think the RF50 is very good for the price.
@@St8lker thank you! Which lens should be my first lens when I get a Canon RP? This one or the 35? Which one do you think is a multi purpose lens? And also I'm looking at this lens for its price and size because I want my setup to be as light as possible. If the difference in quality (sharpness and detail) between this lens and the 35 is significant, I'll be getting the 35. So please tell me.
@@dhilsiva In my opimiom booth are great lenses. But if you owned the RP i advice the RF35, because has IS... and as bonus you get thte macro capibility. Focal lengtth is not so much difference. In my Eyes RF35 is also good for landscape.... And later get the RF85 F2... Enjoy.... by the way, I owned the RP too... it is a great cam.
@@St8lker thank you so much!
Anybody who has yet to try a 50mm 1.8 as a daily on-the-go lens doesn’t know what they’re missing.
I had one on my EOS-3 almost all the time back in my college photojournalism days and it was Amazingly handy.
This lense just showed up early this morning. I was so excited I rolled out of bed to open it up and immediately started shooting. It’s so damn nice for being really affordable
great review of this lens, i've been eyeing the 50 1.2 but all i shoot are my family candid's and the lighter lens that i can carry around all the time with the r6 will be used more than if i slapped on the 1.2, also the savings and 99% of my family that sees the photos will notice the expressions vs. 1,2 and 1.8
Awesome review!
For now, I will keep my EF 50mm and use it with the adapter, but for someone, who want to ditch the adapter and have the newest version, I think this is a good deal, as you present it perfectly.
New subscriber! This was really helpful. I plan to upgrade from my rebel t3i to the EOS R and didn't want to spend so much on the new RF lenses. Thank you, Ted!
I am waiting for the Canon RF 50mm f1.4
After rf 50mmf1.4 you will wait for 35 f1.4. Born to wait gang😃
All around great info. Thanks for touching on the focus breathing too…lots of folks seem to gloss past that.
My dad swore by the EF version of this lens, I used it extensively on my old 60D for indoor events like church events and weddings.
what are the difference between the nikon 50 1.8s? the price and size different is huge
The 50mm f1.8 is one of my favorite lenses but i was suprised how loud the motor is! What's an alternative that can tackle this issue as well as focus breathing?
Is the focus breathing still an issue with bodies that do Dual Pixel AF? The contrast detection AF used to film 4K video (at least on the RP) is known to have an issue with breathing on any lens.
@@Stoney3K On my RP the 50mm just keeps adjusting but take photos which can be bit annoying. It was the same issue with the 50mm 1.8 I used on my T5i years back. I switched to a 28mm more.
Thank you for talking about the video video aspect. As someone learning to use DSLRs/Mirrorless for my channel I can look at other lenses for my videos.
Thanks for this detailed video. Appreciate the amount of time that goes into videos like this.
I shoot with lenses from the 60's and 70's like the Pentax Super Takumar 50mm 1.2 lens (which is radioactive). The cheap canon 50mm blows the doors off these legendary lenses. The bokeh is the only thing on the weak side. Other than that the detail from the subject is off the charts. I think its the perfect lens for the 1st time DSLR photographer.
Hey great stuff.. what lens are you using to shoot this video?
hello Ted! i wounder if you can give a recommendation about this lens or EF 50 1.4, i have the last one but im thinking to switch to RF since I'm very happy with the 35mm RF 1.8 on my EOS R
I always snatch a Canon nifty fifty - had both EF versions(gave the first away when I bought the second). Believe it or not I just grabbed this one for my R5 - am I going to shoot my commercial work with it - of course not. But this compact set up will always be with me on my bike. I also use it when I want a film slr and a digital camera in my bag - hiking/biking/day trips etc. Great video - thanks! Happy holidays!
Hello Master:
Please help and give me some advice,
The camera I am currently using is Canon EOS R10,
The kit lens used with it is (RF-S18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM)
My main subject matter is toy photography.
The secondary shooting content is street photography or portrait photos.
Now I want to buy new lenses, after watching your video,
Want to compare between Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM and RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM
After making a choice, I would like to ask you to give me some advice on which lens is more suitable for me? Thank you.🙏🙏🙏
Nifty Fifty! Awesome...checks all the boxes for me being im using a photo camera...not a video camera. manufacturers really need to market separately. If you want video, buy a an XF400f. If your a photographer, an R6 and this 50 are a great combo. Trying to get hardware to perform flawlessly on both platforms is going to result in failure.
Great video, thanks! I use the EOS-RP. What inexpensive lense would you recommend for video with panning? I have this nifty 50 lense and love it, but agree that with video with motion, doesn't do the trick. I need a lense to do video with my new EOS-RP but am on a budget. Please advise, thanks so much!
Thank you for this! Just purchased this lens for my T5i. However I am having trouble with getting a good shotgun mic 😩 any suggestions? TIA
The one thing that bugs me about this lens over the EF variant are the oval bokeh balls that are far more round in the EF version. Could just be me though.
Just had to stop in to A) subscribe because, for whatever bizarre reason I haven't yet; and B) to say that I agree with your sentiments in the video and C) speaking of which, your video looks AMAZING by the way. The colour, lighting, grading (or whatever) is just magnificent. Awesome stuff!! And thanks for making this video!
Stupid question, but considering an apsc sensor will be using more of the centre of the lens and not making use of all of it, will that mean my edges will be sharper on a crop camera than full frame?
I’m sure you’ve found your answer by now, but yes.
Excellent review. I’m curious how the rf 50 1.8 compares to the Tamron 45mm f1.8. I have the Tamron 45 on a r5 but if the rf 50 1.8 is on par with respect to resolution, considering purchasing it. Your thoughts
hi! I'm considering the Tamron 45mm f1.8 for my RP. Did you make the switch to the RF? Would love to hear your thoughts on them
Hi. Yes I did switch to the rf 50mmf1.8. In terms of image quality ,I would give the edge to the Tamron. But the rf 50 is lighter ( much lighter) and AF much faster. Image quality is pretty good with the rf 50 but in my opinion the Tamron was sharper. In summary if you are shooting action( sports) the Tamron is not very good. But for stationary subjects/ objects it is good
@@michaellekas27 hmm, what about street photography? which would you recommend? Is the difference in AF significant? Tamron has IS and weather sealing. Tough choice. The Tamron is going at a really good price where I leave. Clearance sale
For street photography you should no problem with the Tamron. It should work fine. It’s only if you are shooting fast action sports that it’s not my first choice. Street photography, portraits , cityscapes and landscapes it’s fine
@@michaellekas27 thanks for the reply! You shoot fast moving subjects? or refer moving over to the RF/prefers the more compact RF lens?
Sure there are alot of much better lenses that was releases this year like Sonys wideangle lens etc but this is the lens of the year for me. Considering its a ff lens with autofokus for mirrorless cameras its the best Bang for the buck
Sounds great as I am getting one this afternoon and will be used mostly for street photography....thanks for the review Ted!👍🏼
I noticed that I've been using this lens a lot more than my 1510 Pelican of EF L-series primes. The quality of the image while being small and lightweight are saving my back and making me question my L-series kit.
What, you like to carry this one lens more than a Pelican case full of Canon glass?
How surprising
@@touristguy87 Hahah. I’ve been carrying around Cookes lately and I feel like I’m back to where I started; an aching back.
Recently, I dusted off my original BMPCC and a M4/3- adapted Fujinon 12.5mm C-mount lens. It’s great that I can just slip it into my laptop bag.

How much of an improvement is this over using the 50 1.8 EF with an adapter? I’m definitely getting the 35 1.8 because that’s a length I don’t have currently so it’s a great choice as my first RF. The 50 isn’t expensive either but if it’s not much improvement I could stick with using the Ef with the adapter.
This is just an incredibly helpful video. And the delivery is at a level most could not achieve. I'm not sure which one is more impressive, frankly. Watching this was almost a spiritual journey. Thanks!
I second that!
I use this lens with a R50. I believe that the 50mm transforms to 80mm due to the APS-C sensor. Still, I like the lens.
For the same reason, I might be interested into a prime 35mm lens.
Curious to see a comparison of full frame 50mm vs APS-C 35mm performance.
This really makes buying a R6 a lot cheaper - 35 and 50 are two lenses I use - I don't need really sharp corners - actually Im usually shooting wide so my background is usually out of focus anyway.
All I need next is sigma to make there 24mn f3.5 for RF.
Unfortunately we are never going to see native RF mounts from sigma 😪
Three years in, has nobody mentioned your stary night!? How'd you overlay it so well? I'm just starting in photography but that seems like a cool little thing to be able to sneak into some pics!
Thank you for the great review!
Love the rendering of out of focus backgrounds very classic... Hope canon brings out small a 28mm lens too
I am with you on that. ;-). and a 28 f2 🙂
And EOS RP (or its replacement) + 50 1.8 + 28 f2 and I don't need anything else in the world. Or do I? [I am sitting pretty on my EF lenses and 6D at the moment)].
Hello,
So tell me what you think of this small RF 50mm f1.8 stm lens? Is it really excellent in terms of image rendering? I would like to buy it to put on my Canon RP to go light and do some street photography, is it really worth it? For now I am using my Canpon RP with the Pancake 40 mm f2.8 stm + an adapter ring, will the RF 50 mm be better in your opinion? Thank you in advance for your answers,
Sincerely,
Philgood ...
no i had the same setup as you did and it sucked. every rf lens i've used oversaturates the images and has way to much shadowing especially for a prime lens when there is a lot of light outdoors and it smooths out the images way to much leaving no rough edges on buildings and the images can also come out smudgy because of the excessive smoothness and oversaturation the rf lenses produce
go with the ef 50mm f/1.4 with an adapter mount on the rp. don't waste the money on the rf 1.8 stm
@@RandomGuy-qn2fr Thank you for your reply. I did some tests this afternoon with my Canon RP + RF-Ef adapter ring and I used my 40 mm f 2.8 stm as well as my 35 f2 is usm. And, I confirm that even with my Ef lenses, for Portraits in Jpeg it smoothes faces a lot ! Is there some other way or setting of the device to prevent it from getting too smooth ? On the other hand of course I did not have this problem on the RAW, but here the RAW of my RP I find them less beautiful than what I had with my 6D Mark II, it's not cool ! ...
@@PHILGOODOK1 i never used the 40mm or the 35mm and i never cared for the stm lenses. they've always felt cheaply made and constructed to me. i've always stuck with the usm versions of the ef lenses as they've felt more durable. i mostly shoot in raw very few times in jpeg but never had the smoothness problem with any ef lens i shot in. i've only encountered this problem with the rf lenses regardless if it was shot in raw or jpeg or a combo of both.
@@RandomGuy-qn2fr Thank you for your reply. Yes I want you to check if there is a smoothing to apply by the RP canon, in any case I see it on my Jpeg photos as soon as I zoom in the image on my computer. It was less obvious with my 6D Mark II (They have the same Sensor though)! Please tell me if you find where this problem is coming from.
Sincerely,
Philgood ...
Great review thanks, great tip for video users too.
So good. Love how solid this lens is setup
Awesome timing I’m about to order this for my R6!
Got mine! Enjoy!!!
Any good for sports photography??
Could I use the rf 24mm to 105mm for car photography?
Hello, dear, I have an inquiry
About buying the best lens, I have a Canon D90 camera
I want to buy a 50 mm lens, but I want to know the best choice in buying a 50 - EF or RF lens, thank you
Great video, great content!
for me as owner of the EF 50mm f1.8 this new RF lense is not worth an upgrade to me, pic quality is the same and i don't use the 50mm so often..
Thank you
What is your lighting and camera setup?
Thanks for the insights. Agree with your thoughts. The RF50 1.8 is the most compact full frame 50mm with autofocus in mirrorless systems to date. Canon got the price-size-performance ratio right. I got both this RF50 1.8 and RF50 1.2. These lenses are what makes me keep the EOS-R. While I'm not a big fan of Canon sensor tech and colors as I much favor the Leica DNG RAWs, the workarounds in post processing are manageable for my hobbyist use.
"The RF50 1.8 is the most compact full frame 50mm with autofocus in mirrorless systems to date. "
Yeah, because smaller=better.
the lens alone is bigger than my Sony DSC-MX100R2
Canon Color science is much better than Leica..
@@ming-artoflight2761it's too old prejudice. you have to control raw files. it you dont, crop censors are better to you.

Best bang for buck lens
I love this lens but is the only one I can't get images focus a the full aperture.. what Am'I doing wrong?
...honestly this RF prime combo does *what* better than my $200 Canon G1X?
Especially as you say the MFT charts that you show at say 02:50 are theoretical charts not charts based on real lenses?
$200 bucks is a lot of money to a lot of people.. its twice the price as the EF version ..so I would hope it would perform very good
Add the Ef to Dr basic adapter and it’s about the same price, with a better AF
The 1.2L version is $2k more and there's barely any difference. So $200 isn't much to ask when it's the 10th of the price.
I just ordered this, yay no more adapter with my nifty 50.
Just bought it today!
Can i put it on my canon r50?
Yes
nice sir..merry christmas🎅
I'm here after watching Christopher Frost's review on this lens, and I'm curious to know if you had the same issue as him when using the control ring. Apparently, in order to either manual focus or use the control ring, you have to half-press the shutter first to make it work, which is kinda weird for me. Appreciate the response in advance!
That's not the case (I own the lens)
@@MarkNakib Thanks for the reply!
You may need to get into the custom functions menu of your camera. You can change that shutter half-press setting. I've only seen that on my RP
I think nikon z 50mm 1.8 has better performance but that is expensive, waiting for canon 85mm 1.8 to pair with 35mm 1.8 macro.
The image quality really looks great, I just feel like the vignette is quite a bit too heavy not to impact your pictures. That's why I am still not convinced by the RF mount and will wait for a 1.4 or more third-party options.
the ef 50mm f/1.4 it's 10+ years old but still beats this piece of junk by a landslide
Newb here, would this work on a canon m50 with no adapter
No. This is an RF mount, which works on RF mounts only (EOS RP, R, R6, and R5 at the moment)
The m50 is an EF-M lens, which is a different category which requires a different lens and mount.
You were in deep Ellum around Murray?! We need to grab a coffee one day
Better than a lens cap
11:30 def not good for video.. I’ve been shooting head shots ina podcast setting and this lenses gets out of focus with the slightest movement but I never thought to use my eF 50 with an adapter ! Wouldn’t have thought the EF would be better than the RF ..but I’m going to try it this week
I wish nikon make a smaller 50mm lens for z series
They do.
That’s a great review just about the right level of detail.
Can you review Nikon Z lenses
If you can call it good even though it sounds like a coffee grinder while it is focusing. It's extremely annoying and I have to set it on single shot just to keep it from jumping back and forth making all sorts of noises. My Sony prime lenses focus quickly and silently.
Awesome stufff! Also...as a girl, I appreciate the manicured hands!!!

Depend son what you define as better. Smalker, Lighter, better balanced, image quality per buck. Yes, than the rf 50 1.8 is better. If you want corner sharpness wide open go with the sigma. Sigmas GV line also offers an amazing build quality. Love the manual focus of sigma art lenses.

The EF version of the lens is sharp and the build quality is crap....
The second version is much better than the first but you are still right. But for the price? They got to skimp on something. No complaints here - just treat it with care.
@@TimFitzwater yes you are right.....and that’s why I bought something else that was built for more rigorous use.

Hello!
I need help.
I don't know what's better to do.
buying the canon rp with the 24-105 f4 rf lens
or
buying the canon r with the 50 f1.8 lens
now im taking food photography and I like to take photos as a hobby.
Please let me know your opinion on this.
the 50mm will give you very nice bokeh and since it's 1.8f it will allow for better indoor close up photography. Useful if you're in a restaurant or don,t have extra good lighting. The 24-105 is a great kit lens, I have both and love em
You should be in movies
why cant i get this to AF?
"...these are not the same lens design."
Are you sure about that? 🤔 they are not the exact same, but both have the ancient, double gauss system... IN 2020...
There are a lot of reviews that say same things about EF 50 1.8 STM. And they are generally correct, but nobody tells one thing the bokeh is absolutely disgusting. You can argue it is a small detail BUT, the only real reason anybody in the budget of kit and these lensees would go for a nifty 50 is B O K E H. It looks ok with soft backgrounds like bushes and that bookshelf on, but when there is a single object, like say a church bell tower in the background of your model... Well you can see where it's going - oddly specific. EF 50 1.8 STM ruined a shoot for me. And tainted my love for canon stuff. I see same appalling characteristics in test shots here. Take another look at the books, 8:54 mid to lower right - the edges of books are scraping my retinas. The outlining is very prominent and it has very weird vertical doubling. In my pics with bell tower against the blue sky it made the tower very soft and smooth, but there were TWO towers with weird ringy outlines around them. I barely kept myself from throwing the just bought lens in the bin. Mind you, I still shoot with Eos 6D, the original one, I am on a very tight budget. Gave it away to colleagues friends kid, don't want to see it again and am too honest to sell it.
No vintage lens would do that to anyone, and not even older nifty: 50 1,8 II.
I am very sad.
Hello, am I wrong or the sony fe 50mm 1.8 is better than this?
The Sony FE 50 f/1.8 is complete garbage. Unless of course you like super slow lenses that hunt for focus forever and make absurdly loud noises while trying to focus. Image quality isn't that good either.
Not a great fan of the fifty, so this makes a lot of sence. It's very useful sometimes but for portrait you need to go a little longer and for street and environmental portrait a little wider. So dropping £5-600 on a copy is a bit much.
You're so right about the video performance. Canon markets it as good for video but it's actually terrible for video
Please review Nikon Z6ii

Japan vs Germany.
Very interesting but I'm not getting this. I want no less than a F1.4 for a prime lens, otherwise I'll stick to my much more useful (Tamron 24-70 F2.8 IS) and (RF 70-200 F2.8 IS). Sure it's very cheap but I would rather have the choice of paying 150-200$ more for that extra aperture.
I have a Tamron 24-70 2.8 sp, and love it on RP. But with an adapter it is really heavy. This lens comes when you dont want to carry the weight, and when your bag is small. I do not recommend the rf 50 1.8 for narrow historic streets by the way, but for occasional street shots it is really like feather, plus more light. Regards.
I’ll be honest, I don’t like it, it’s really good for photography but just didn’t help for videography
