Thank you so much for posting this. I saw this performance when it first aired on Johnny Carson and have been looking for a copy ever since. A beautiful arrangement from a beautiful and talented lady.
Bravo! Glad I ran into Bernadette Peters vids tonight. Always liked her but hadn't seen nor heard anything about her since her spouse died 5 yrs ago. (Will look for her tour now). Poor girl...she marries rather late in life and he dies in a tragic helo crash after about 10 yrs of marriage. There is no one like her. She's 62 and I'm 48 but would marry her on a heart beat!
Any idea what happened to Part 1 of this? She rendered the most beautiful version of "I'm Flying" from Peter Pan ever heard. I'd be ever grateful to anyone who knows how to find it!
After 5 years, I’ll try again. I’ve even written to the Tonight Show archivists who say they can’t help me. I’d nearly give a limb to find part one of this, where she sings “I’m Flying”. Can anyone help?
I'm not sure if this is of any use to you, but there's a version of Bernadette singing the song from the Carol Burnett Show ua-cam.com/video/ctnA19Wdj6c/v-deo.html This version was uploaded already when you posted your original comment and you might have already seen it and it's not quite the version you were looking for, but it's still a very wonderful performance nonetheless. Seems like you were quite invested in this clip and in Bernadette - I love Bernadette quite a lot and think she is really incredible, so would have loved to be able to help :)
Remember seeing this live. I have wanted to see it again ever since. Thank you for posting it! AMAZING. I am sure that was the way Hank felt when he wrote it.
@kjanson I know, I know, I know and I am sorry for using the past tense; I think I was mentally referring to that particular Johnny Carson show which was the first time I heard her sing this song...hence the "she was" comment. I still watch her whenever she appears on TV and watch and rewatch the Sondheim concerts she has appeared in. Mea Culpa. C.

.....ARRRGH!
She is killing me with her fabulousness...
Holy crap! This is how that song is supposed to sound. (Sorry Hank!) I'm with the cloning bit--yes, by all means, before it's too late.
Totally love this clip of this magical lady.
Unadulterated perfection! Bernadette is the best.

she purses her lips like celine dion when she sings. maybe that's the key to being a wonderful singer...
