- A tribute to Irving Berlin. Musical material created by Larry Grossman and Buzz Kohan. Directed by Marty Pasetta. Set design by Ray Klausen and costumes by Bob Mackie.
I was one of the 28 showgirls in the fabulous Bob Mackie designs. I did not have a VCR at the time, so I have never seen this number. Thanks for the memories!
those costumes were AMAZING! Which one did you wear?! Tell me EVERYTHING!
So jealous! What a fantastic number to dance, but those costumes!!! I mean, that's once in a lifetime!
Philip Estrada I had the red and black feathers and sequins homage to the 1930s costume starting with "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody". Great memories.
What a wonderful thing to experience and have to look back on!
How great!
Two tremendous talents. The Oscars would be a lot less boring today if they still had wonderful production numbers like this! Bravo Peter and Bernadette!
What a treat. I was lucky enough to see Bernadette years later on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun singing "No Business Like Show Business" and she was magnificent.
WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO VARIETY TV? It used to be the staple of American entertainment. All the great performers could do it all. I miss all of that.
Thank you for the upload!
What happened? They all act like sluts and pimps now.
The scenery is amazing Peter Allen is great too.
Fabulous! Just love Walter Painter's choreography. Peter Allen and Bernadette Peters are golden.
Two of my favorite singers and Broadway performers, Bernadette Peters and Peter Allen, whom we lost much too soon. Bless them both!
SO INCREDIBLY BRILLIANT... The RAW powerful TALENT enhancing one another!! BRAVO!!
Oh wow this is so gorgeous!!!! Amazing choreography, fantastic performances, beautiful costumes, smart set. It's blowing my mind and giving me all the inspiration!!!
My friend, the late and mighty Peter Allen!!
Boy, those were the days when the Academy Awards could give the Tony Awards a run for their money.
When the Oscars were fun to watch!
Thank you!
Could you imagine a 10+ minute production number on the Oscars now? It will never happen. Nobody trusts the audience to have an attention span beyond 90 seconds.
... with Peter Allen performed on the 1983 Academy Awards
And THAT, boys and girls, is what they used to call "Entertainment"
This is great! What year is it from?
that's a Opening
@nickbigd If Bernadette Peters was performing, I'm sure many would. The Oscars just have become so boring. They don't have that same desire to entertain but rather to shove in as many actors in their allotted time so they can get people to watch.
Less is more? Nah, more is more.
@nickbigd If it was as good as this, I'm sure even they'd enjoy it!
WOW ... now *THAT'S* a SMASH ...
what year is this
When was this?
Where is White Christmas???
What year is this from?
+wakeupand smellthecoffee - 1983 telecast
They knew how to put on a musical SHOW back then. Now it's just ugliness with anti-music.
