So glad the city fought to ensure part of the restaurant was preserved. How great would it be if they removed that tree and put the old sign back up. This was a terrific episode - many thanks Jordan.
GREAT memories; thank you Jordan!! 1) My wife and another couple dined at Chasen's in 1976 and sat in a booth ajoining Liz Taylor and John Warner. We ordered the Hobo Steak which was amazing!! My friend and I had also had heard about the ice cubes in the men's urinals and saw them for ourselves that night!! Johnny Carson once joked with Ed McMahon that a test of masculinity was how many ice cubes you could melt at Chasen's!! 2) In an interview, I heard Donna Summer tell how she wrote "She Works Hard for the Money" based on the elderly lady who was the women's room attendant at Chasen's whom Donna became great friends with. Yep; GREAT memories!! Many thanks again!!
I had dinner there right before it closed. It was so great. Sat in that same red booth. I am so grateful I was able to see the place inside. Things have changed so much here...there's no glamour anymore. :(
I LOVE old Hollywood. I'm a TCM freak. Awesome story Jordan. Thanks for keeping old Hollywood alive. It must be forgotten. These actresses and Actors worked hard .
Wow - I really enjoyed this CHASEN’s Restaurant video! I also loved “That Thing You Do” when they mention “Sully, saw you at CHASEN’s with Suzanne Pleshette!” Wonderful history! Thank you Jordan!
Here’s another oldie but goodie Scandia. The bar manager lived next door to my family home in Santa Monica. His name was Lud. I remember when my sister, my mom, and I went to have lunch there. Very fancy. An old friend of mine’s mother worked at Chasens on their switchboard. I can recall stories about the famous people she would see dining there. Those were the days!!!
When my daughter graduated from Westlake School for Girls we had her graduation party at Chasen’s. This was just before it closed. There were more than movie people, that were saddened. The same sadness was experienced at the closing of the Brown Derby.😔
Love this vlog, Love Old Hollywood History, and Love that the current store fought to preserve parts of the Store, love the booths, and luckily they saved the pictures over the booths and over the Deli, in the main store. History of the building, and how chili started an entire new career and a wonderful place for others to enjoy! Love all the History! Ty for sharing.
Beautiful, Jordan. When Chasen's closed People mag said it was because the character of guests had worsened -- easy to believe since hoodlum grunge became the Hollywood ethos and lifestyle. In classic H'wood people wanted to act as grown-up and sophisticated as they could. Now it's quite the contrary.
We went there when I took your tour with Scott Michaels. You bought some pasta sauce from the market. Carol Burnett used to go to chasen’s after a taping of her show
Did they say “I’m so glad we had this time together… just to share a laugh or sing a song?” “Seems we just get started and before you know it, comes the time we have to say goodbye…”
I went to Chasen's in the early 90s and it was awesome! I had Elizabeth Taylor's favorite Chili. So many amazing stories about this place and 2 other historic L.A. eateries: Musso & Franks and Barney's Beanery! Thanks for sharing this, Jordan!!!
My dear great aunts and grandmother dined here often in the 1950s and frequently brought me, a very young girl, along with them. It was a special treat, dressing up and, for them, meeting friends and star gazing--not to mention the great food. I still have a yellowed old clip of that chili recipe from the LA Times. And yes, it's really so good you'd pay to have it delivered to you on the other side of the world.
Lovely video. Reminds me of the other places the stars hung out at. Like Ciro's (now the Comedy Store). They lived a grander lifestyle to the way we live today. Everyone dressed up and women even wore furs back then. Sorry to see what Hollywood looks like now. Thank you, Jordan, for the lovely look back. Take care.
Being an animal lover, plenty of ppl wear fakes that are undetectable from the real thing. When I was 17, I was proud to own a rabbit coat. Now I have a 🐇and am disgusted I ever owned one. My 🐇has figured out how to open the door to her room and is very affectionate and sassy.
Nothing wrong with real fur it breaths, unlike fake fur . Some people need extra warmth , but not so much in Ca . People are more important than an animal . Too many animals roaming the earth is not healthy .
I read a biography of James Stewart a while ago and I remember it said they used to allow Gloria Stewart to smoke in there after the laws changed, she just held her cigarette under the table 😉 Really a shame things changed so much that the restaurant couldn’t keep going, but at least it’s good there is a bit left.
Harold Ross, founder of The New Yorker magazine, was a friend of Dave Chasen and a major investor in the restaurant. There was a potrait of Ross in one of the dining rooms.
I lived a few blocks away and always loved the history of Chasen's. . . and i shopped at Bristol Farms. Grateful they kept the building and some honoring of its former glory.
Thank you for letting us know about Chasens. I would have loved to visit and just see the celebrities that visited the Restaurant. So sad that it’s no longer there, part of history. But you continue to bring us the videos. Love all the information you bring us. Great job!!! ❤
This is what I love. You are a master of researching and then sharing that information while vlogging the location. I have been to, of course, Wolf Gang Puck’s fantastic restaurants in Downtown Disney Orlando and Universal Orlando. Back in the day my parents went to Spago’s (Wolf’s big Hollywood splash with the stars). I also got to go to La Dome on Sunset and you’ll never guess who was sitting at the table next to us! -Lionel Richey! He was with a man we didn’t recognize. Jordan I started following you when you lived in Hollywood and these are your videos that I love. Thank you for all that you do! 🎥
For a restaurant based in los Angeles it had a long life. Le Dome closed in 2007. Im surprised that Spago is still opened. Very few restaurants have long lives. Im going to one in Los Angeles that is a little over 100 yrs old for christmas. Tam O'Shanter in Atwater village. I love all the old places as long as the food is good 😊❤❤
Yes 👍 indeed! The fans of the film “That Thing You Do” love ❤️ any references to the film’s scenes, characters. Even Guy Patterson tells Lamar he will beat CHASEN’s w/ Suzanne Pleshette. (I thought they said “Chase’s” instead of CHASEN’s. It all makes sense ow, 😃👍)
My all time favorite, William Holden is in the center of the picture with Reagan. I think the guy in the picture with Bogart and Sinatra was Paul Douglas. I really liked Paul Douglas in "A Letter to Three Wives" and some films by Judy Holiday. Hey, hey, they weren't The Monkees generation....I was😁. Thank you, Jordan, for this great video and I am so glad people cared enough to preserve Chasen's. I am, for sure, one of those people who would have wanted to see this if I had ever had the chance!
Has anyone here attempted to make the famous chili? There are a number of recipes online that claim to be the "authentic" one. If it was good enough for Liz Taylor then it must be pretty special!
Another of your finest!!! Thanks Jordan, WE LOVE YOU!!! Stay safe and continue to follow your dreams...see you soon!!! Lastly, I just love when you treat us to Hollywood's famous people and places!!! I truly wish CHASEN'S RESTAURANT would have survived, what a shame!!!
Jordan, I always love your vlogs, but especially the old history ones! I'm so happy to see the building wasn't torn down & turned into a mall. How wonderful to see that Bristol Farms kept a section of Chasens the same. I laughed when I saw the old menu & Broth was $4! Plus, the "No Credit Cards accepted" on top of their menu. Thank you for sharing old history with us. Well done, as usual, Jordan! 😊

Great comment about how the city fought for CHASEN’s building and part of the interior to be preserved! Love historic preservation!
Chasen's and the Brown Derby---the two most famous L.A. restaurants from the golden era of Hollywood!

I ate there back in summer of 1990, real swanky
When I worked at Disney TV we had a Christmas dinner at Chasen's...around 1994. Now, the only thing left are a few booths.
Is that not Luke Costello (I said Bud Abbott originally as I get those two mixed up for obvious reasons) in the middle to the right of Sinatra?
