these sort of lesons are much better than the usual ones that take ages to get through it.anyone that has a chance of playing this already can just watch you as you go through it at medium pace and pick it up. top marks for not taking 45 minutes and showing each part over and over again.
interesting points ,if anyone else is searching for learn christian worship guitar try Tarbetti Worship Music Tutor (just google it ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my partner got amazing results with it.
Awesome playing but even more incredible lesson. I'm at a level where seeing the position and hearing the notes, I can figure out what you're doing. Most other videos over talk the lessons taking away from hearing and seeing what's actually being done. Bravo.
Yay! A complete breakdown of this track that's a) accurate, b) easy to follow (but damn hard to play) and c) contains extra info on getting the "EVH" touches. When are you going to tour with G3!!??
definitely a great piece, but I think his slam dunks on all other players are the intros to I'm the One and Mean Street. he destroys the entire guitar world with those two intros.
Thank GOD - someone who doesn't over analyze it or play it so slow that you lose interest. It took me I don't know how many hours to figure the main parts out before figuring out the rest. Yes and no as far as difficulty. If you're used to playing Eddies Style then you know that it's not going to be easy figuring out the notation but once you do you never forget. Thank you so much for sharing this with the rest of us since there are those that still don't know how to play this song all the way through correctly.
great job dude, you are a an amazing talent, but whats great about eddie is.. he did all this in his early 20', with no internet or lessons, and still today ppl are still trying to re-crate what he did ..cheers!
Rick! Your awesome bro. I have learned more from watching this video over, and over, and over....... but I am glad to say that today I finally made it to the end of learning this "beast of a piece", and only because of your expertise. Only half speed for now of course. You are the man!
Rick - Thank you for this! I think so many teachers/transcribers focus so much on each individual note (whether the original artist really intended that note or not!) and loose site of capturing the piece as a 'whole' - Your positions and fingerings physically 'make sense' on the fretboard. This helped me a TON. THANK YOU!!!
Was trying forever and realized your tuning is way sharp! It was driving me crazy and I thought my tuner was broke but I’m fact sir you are the one who’s multiple cents sharp!
Eddie Van Halen was one of the best at pulling music out of the air, it takes more than just technical training as a musician to do that, that dude was way on another level, I knew tat the first time I heard him, I called him scary good, no wonder people are still talking about him, R.I.P. King Edward the 1st.
Decades ago I tried to do this song. I have the tablature for this song and even with it AND listening to the recording, I still couldn't pull it off and make it sound like what I was hearing and seeing. Frigging nuts. Now with this vid, I should be able to conquer it :) Time to practice!
Excellent tutorial. You really captured the essence of it. Very well done sir!!! Side note to those reading: The bit he starts going into around 5:00 uses a well blended combination of alternate picking with legato (strike first note then combine hammer ons and pull offs for the next 3 or so notes). To get it sounding the closest to Eddie, one tip really helps. Eddies got what is often described as a "heavy pick hand" which likely devolped during his youth by jamming relentlessly with his older brother Alex, a drummer. As the only guitarist in the band, he started to cultivate a harder hitting, percussive playing style. You can really hear him dig into that first note before each successive burst of legato. It's essential to really strike that first "jump-off note" with a heavy pick attack because you'll need that extra "oomph" to help your hammer ons and pull offs ring out loud and clear on a nylon stringed acoustic. I've seen a lot of guys play those parts using just straight alternate picking, which is totally fine. Not everyone cares to play things exactly how they sound and would rather opt to put their own unique spin on it.
I really only wanted to learn that chromatic part towards the end but I ended up learning the whole song lol I have a new appreciation for this song hearing it slowed down
I'm not gonna learn this as it's not my bag but i gotta say, your pace of instruction for someone that could learn this is perfect. No "OK Esus4, that's 1st finger here, second finger here...." Nice job.
Yes,you're right man,to me most people are always going on about "Eruption" but stuff like "Cathedral" and this one are mindblowing.I'm sure that Paco de Lucia would agree even if he's another level!!!I love most rock guitar shredder but the Spanish are "la crème de la crème"...Hi from France :)
Brilliant piece , glad u broke it down, I never could, great exercise for tapping, which Eddie is so fluent in. Great Spanish runs though, well engineered
"Bend Over" ROFLMAO that was so unexpected which made it extra funny. I was rollin in tears laughing so hard for almost 5 minutes. Thanks mate. Great, fun Video
How can I make an acoustic guitar very responsive to tapping like that? Do I connect it to an amp or strike the notes twice harder than what I do in electric?
That's you in the video? That's remarkable the transformation...you're like a 100 lbs lighter and look way healthier...okay you are told that often. Great lesson dude!
Rick, I really love your lessons. Thank you sir. Geesh, this one is hard! You were right. It's very hard! I'll get it though if it takes me a lifetime! :-)
Hi Rick Thanks for taking the time to upload the tutorials and giving us all a chance to hear that amazing playing. Quick question, how do you get that loud attack on when you hammer-on (especially with the pinky!). Do you use a compressor or is it all in the technique? Even on your acoustic it sounds good. Any chance of a tutorial for us lesser mortals? Looking forward to the next awesome vid.
One thing you realize is the microphone quality that Eddie used in recording the song is top shelf. You hear all the details.
thanks to ted templeman
i didn't realize you were the big guy in the video, you look good man, shed all that weight congrats.
Agreed. I had a craving for Spanish Fly and when he showed himself, I was amazed how great he looks now.
playing this song is what shed all the pounds. you have to be careful. ,Once thru at half speed burns 5300 cpm
One minute music and the whole eternity trying to play.... This are absolutely Eddie master piece. Thank you Rick for share this.

Still can't believe it's the same guy.

m zii your comment has nothing to do with the one you commented on
He had a whole glowup
"First things first it's bloody difficult."
Awesome playing but even more incredible lesson. I'm at a level where seeing the position and hearing the notes, I can figure out what you're doing. Most other videos over talk the lessons taking away from hearing and seeing what's actually being done. Bravo.
thats y im here too man!!! all other vids talk way too much it actually makes it harder for me to learn!

Eddie..just stupid creative.
RIP Eddie...
Out of all the amazing stuff Eddie has boggled our minds with this interlude probably shows Eddies genius more then any other thing he's ever done
definitely a great piece, but I think his slam dunks on all other players are the intros to I'm the One and Mean Street. he destroys the entire guitar world with those two intros.
how you managed to put such a complex song into a comprehensible lesson in 10 minutes is beyond me

Well, Ed did write it so why would he need lessons on how to play it LOL?
+Dan Nainan, his point is Eddies never took guitar lessons, he's self taught.
Thanks to this video and weeks of practice you have turned a beginner into an expert that can show out anyone. Thank you so much man

someone has been working out......
He looked like a different person lmao
Rick, that was kick ass dude !!! excellent work.. was fun learning that ... :)

Rick, you're a fantastic player, and an inspiration. Thanks for the free lesson.

If anything, it's even more amazing when you break it down. Excellent lesson.
This was the song that made my hit subscribe a few years ago. Thank you for the lesson!

Thnx for the tutorial, but way outta my league
Perfect rendition! Tone and notes are exact same as the original on Van Halen II
Por mucho. El mejor cover de Spanish Fly que he visto desde hace como 10 años. Eres un guitarrista magnífico!
same tone as Eddie, you are a guitar god Rick!
Such a legend he chose this as a tutorial…. Mind blown
Brilliant piece , glad u broke it down, I never could, great exercise for tapping, which Eddie is so fluent in. Great Spanish runs though, well engineered

Thanks man, i'm having a great time with the song!
Always liked that one. Fun to play, indeed. Well done!!!
Uh oh, if Rick says that it is difficult how am I ever going to do it?
We're all gonna make it brah
That part at about 8:15 just gave me the same vibes of (The Ecstasy of Gold) a soundtrack of The good The bad and The ugly movie.
Thanks You helped me play this the correct way!

ТОВАРИЩ! Очень полезный урок по Ване Хулену, правда сложно играть это на русской балалайке, но мы же русские, за Сталина и Эрупшен сыграем
i agree
Very nice; thanks for posting!
How can I make an acoustic guitar very responsive to tapping like that? Do I connect it to an amp or strike the notes twice harder than what I do in electric?
Has to be a classical guitar with nylon strings.
MerkinMuffly Actually you can tap vary well on a steel string acoustic. Just gotta practice a lot.
have the guitar set up properly and it will respond accordingly
Eddie put nylon strings on a standard acoustic for this. It wasn't played on your typical classical guitar.
Tune to d stanard
Great execution¡ Just a tip on the first i think its a phrygian mode scale. There is a mute note. And he does a downward pick.
great lesson rick! to me this has always been much more impressive than eruption :)
thank you sooo much. you rock man !! Incredible

Мне тоже понравилось😃👍
Awesome! Thanks!
When a minute-length song is so complex it takes 9 more minutes to teach it-
great job!
Hi Rick
Thanks for taking the time to upload the tutorials and giving us all a chance to hear that amazing playing.
Quick question, how do you get that loud attack on when you hammer-on (especially with the pinky!). Do you use a compressor or is it all in the technique? Even on your acoustic it sounds good. Any chance of a tutorial for us lesser mortals?
Looking forward to the next awesome vid.
Awesome and fast !
Wow!!!!! Thank you!!!!!!!
Thanks legend 🔥
Awesome job, Rick. How "composed" do you think the piece is...or do you feel Eddie was just winging it?
