- In this video I give some tips and locations for catching sockeye salmon on the Kenai River. Everyone seems to have their favorite technique, but this is what works well for me.
Please note that this footage was from the summer of 2023 when limits were raised to 6 per person. Make sure you know the limits and regs every time you go out.

nice job guys!!!!!
Was just out there this morning. Limit out in 70 min. It was so damn cool. First time fishing the Kenai River.
That’s awesome!
We will be there August 7th, cannot wait! We are hoping to see some Cohos!! Thanks for videoing it will be a blast!!
Keep me posted how you do! I’ve always been tempted to go later in August just to experience the silver (coho) bite.
@@JacksonBaumgartOutdoors I will, we are looking forward to the Coho run!!
Was out this morning. They just started running yesterday. Fishing was amazing
@@jasonl1949 very cool, we are very excited!!! Thank you for the update!!!
@@bruceganter8449 3 guys in our group. Limit in 70 min
Awesome video brother I can’t wait to get out there
It won’t be long! I’m not going to make it there this summer, but probably next. You line up there?
Get em’
Just use a piece of yarn and a sticky sharp Gamakatsu #4
True. I had my rig still from the russian river that morning which is why I had the smaller gap hook size. Definitely could switch it up.

Bro why are u using a Coho/Russian River fly on the lower river? You are just handicapping yourself. Recommend a 3/0 or 4/0 Gamakatsu J-hook or Octopus Circle hook. U have to tie the circle correctly though if you use one. Your hook is why u are losing so many. Best of luck!
@@Randy_Savage_ohyeah the ones I’m losing are the ones that are snagged most likely. With the smaller gap size I’d rather those ones just pop off earlier instead of fighting a snagged fish against that current.
@@JacksonBaumgartOutdoorsyour call man just trying to help you out. Those flies are designed and mandated in certain areas for a reason.
@@Randy_Savage_ohyeah true I appreciate that. I think we had just come from fishing the Russian river and that’s what I had tied on and never thought to switch.
Please go with a guide service to learn the flossing basics before doing another informational video.
Fill me in on what I’m doing wrong? My dad has been going to Alaska for 30 years and this was my 5th time going and this technique works great for us 🤷♂️
@@JacksonBaumgartOutdoors there is nothing wrong with your technique evidenced by the fish on your stringer. Always someone on the internet that thinks they can do it better. August can't get here soon enough, great video.
This is without a doubt, thee best display of ethical “flipping” for salmon I have probably ever seen on youtube! No back swing, (kenai twitch), no high sticking, very smooth and a gentle pick-up, or retrieve, what ever you wanna call it. Some anglers will claim to not snag but when u watch their videos they are absolutely snagging. You sir are doin it exactly the way it’s suppose to be done!! Much respect to your technique! Let the haters hate! Your haul says it all!! Great job!! Tight lines! Cheers! 👍🏽
@@Back2Life1 dude thank you for that!! 🙏 I got a kick out of that comment above also so had to respond. Half the people I usually see there seem to be purposely snagging opposed to just letting the natural drift happen. Next time I’m back I plan on bringing the fly rod for them.
@@Back2Life1couldn’t agree more, he has a good flossing technique without the snagging rip at the end. I just question his choice of hook on the lower river.
