  • Sockeye Fishing on the Kenai River is a three day trip and each day is its own video. This video series was filmed in August of 2021. This adventure was a spur of the moment trip and to keep things simple and nimble I camped in the back of my truck. Additionally, when shopped for food for the trip, I decided to buy a Costco five gallon bucket of Readywise Emergency dehydrated meals. I have no experience with Readywise, so that in itself was going to be a mini adventure. Come along for some great fishing and a "review" fo the meals I tried on this trip.

      I agree. It’s is nice a catch a few spares and feed others. That said, I give them part of any bounty that I am fortunate enough to bring home.

    Love your videos, food for my soul. Long time Alaska resident now in Colorado, but still make it up every year to fish with the family. Have property off Funny River road. I like the drift boat idea, great way to get to less crowded spots!

      The run this year was really late, but I would agree with you it was probably the most fish we have had in years.

      Thanks for subscribing. We have a lot of fun videos coming up. Additionally, we have many fishing videos and some how to sockeye fish videos as well. In the first part and the last part of this video, I just had a piece of yarn tied in the shank of the hook. In the middle of the video, I was running a bead above the hook. It was a glorious day to be out, not all days are this productive or pretty.

    Very productive day of fishing for you and your proxy. Enjoyed seeing your action of catching and landing your fish. Your netting got better as you caught all your fish. Surprised you did get tangled with the anchor rope or you stringer of fish.

    • @RaisedinAlaska
      @RaisedinAlaska  3 роки тому

      Yes, not my best day netting. In real time it didn’t seem all that bad, but when I saw it on video I had to laugh at myself. Most of my problem was not tiring out the fish first, which is the funnest part, before netting it.

    Thank you very much for the exciting Video 😊Can you please explain, why you use a fly line, since you're basically Center-pin fishing (originally a Canadian method) used when fishing for Salmon and Steelhead fishers of B.C. with bait/yarn or Beads/yarn?! Also isn't it better to retain the smaller Sockeye for consumption as the taste just as good as the larger ones? As anglers we all get more excited when we catch the bigger ones! We also hope to continue finding and catching the larger ones. As far as the future for big the salmon is concerned, even Cattle Ranchers know that, crossing the larger cattle specimens, are crossed the offspring are most likely, grow to be larger animals, so don't you think that maybe we should liberate the largest and keep the smaller for the table?

    • @RaisedinAlaska
      @RaisedinAlaska  2 роки тому +1

      I think that genetically speaking, you’re perfectly correct: the larger fish are more likely to produce larger offspring. Most of the larger fish on this river are males, they generally run a pound or so larger than the females. That said, a person can be selective in the size of the males and females they choose to keep.
      As for the line on my fly rod, I’m actually using hundred pound mono. I know that sounds weird, but this is how I ended up there: I would go through two to three spools of fly line a season at $50-$75 a spool. I would wear the coating on the core of the line. Using a fly rod, I always have line in my left hand and 30 pound mono is small enough in diameter that it cuts into my hands and braided line is like a saw. 100 lb mono is roughly the same diameter as standard fly line and is easy on the hands. That side, I do run 30 pound leader so if I get hooked up on the bottom I can break the leader off. It’s an odd set up, but it’s very functional and I’ve run the same mono on this real for years. Thus, it’s pretty expensive.

    I've run drift boats for over 55 years and I cant understand why you didn't put the anchor close to the shore so the anchor line and boat were out of your way. You may want to practice how to net a fish.

    • @RaisedinAlaska
      @RaisedinAlaska  2 місяці тому

      @@william6526 Good observations. I really prefer to fish below the boat and that had been my initial plan, but there wasn’t a great drift there so I moved behind the boat. In the rush of the situation, I made due but it certainly wasn’t optimal. Netting: yes that was a real cluster. Again, I rushed it, that fish came in easy and then decided to fight once I got the net out. I should have worked to play him out before trying to net him. Thanks for the accurate comments. 👍🏽
