I just watched this again after not watching it for several months. Now that I "know" and understand Tom better, this is even better, as I have really picked up on all of the tongue-in-cheek-ness of it. I have to say, Tom, when you have that "edge" to you, it's phenomenal. Whether you are calling Phase 10 a quote-unquote game, ribbing Sam about his boring story about which streets he walked down in the UK, teasing Jason, or trying to convince Eric that a game is not just merely not recommend-able, but is actually garbage, it is truly entertaining. I love to see both the high praise for great games, as well as the trashing of poorly designed, themed, or produced games; perhaps the latter, more. Keep up the good work!
It was one of the videos that kept me coming back to the channel back in the early days (besides the new reviews. I always liked rewatching the more entertaining of his videos including several of the top tens they made early on.)
I'll admit, I was confused at first. Tom seriously looked like someone threatened to come after him and sue him for everything he had because of the first review. The whole scene with his family there seemed like a way of telling a sympathetic world, "But I have kids to feed!" (Hey, I'm slow. That's what I thought.) Then I finally figured out it was a clever smack down to his critics. Well done, Tom! If anything, he needs more negative reviews. There are a lot of terrible games out there.
Oh, I'm sure that no one at Dice Tower reads comments from videos this far back, but this is fantastic. A review like this once in awhile would be hilarious and would give Derek and Zee something to do during the week. LOL
Just one more example of the absolutely contagious amount of fun you show in your videos and podcasts! Hilarious light hearted retaliation! Keep up the great work buster.
Omg best trolling ever! Even in the starting scene, with his "serious apologetic" face I couldn't but wonder "Oh my God, he must be kidding!". And then I saw the banana in the box. Hahahahhahahahahahaha! Tom you are a serious threat for the whole Christianity! You are a little god wondering on the Earth! Hahahahahahahahahahaha!
The outtakes were really good to show how much effort must have gone in for the wole family to be so deadpan for the actual video. Love it. the video, not the game, doh!
Ohh Tom there is so much that I love about your style including the unapologetic nature personal opinion based reviews. This video is right up there with you anti-unboxing video. If people don't get you or don't like what you do then that's a shame for them.
Bwahah, trash and a banana peel in the box. The game is "exciting". "Sorry I threw it a few feet.", then you throw it off the roof (best part). I love the sarcasm of this video as much as I enjoy your serious reviews of games. Good stuff man. Keep up the good work.
Ok, I am just now seeing this and I know I am super late, but I linked a funny and fake Dan and Phil Games apology video on Twitter and someone linked this to me in response. OMG this is so great! All the little moments and the adorable family and the water to the face?? You are all amazing. Hope you are doing well!
Yeah! I've always liked you, Tom, ever since I found you, looking for insight on the Traders & Barbarians expansion for Catan. Since then, I've always come back to The Dice Tower when I want to hear more about interesting board games. But now, after seeing this video in conjunction with the original Vasco review ... you're something of a hero to me. :D What's the point of having a review show if you can't be open about your honest opinion, right? Tom, you're awesome!
Tom, you have gotten too PC over the years in your reviewing;) we need more of these honest reviews about awful board games and please, much more throwing of boxes (if it deserves it of course)!!! :D
All I can think about when seeing Tom's wife's facial expression is "American Gothic". Tom just needs to be holding a pitchfork. Being a parent of 4 boys - it is astonishing to see how quickly the Vasel family (like mine) has grown up.
I still like Dice Tower but this era was just unbelievably better. Tom not worrying about ties to companies or anything else and just being honest is really what made me connect with DT and I hope to see this kind of feel return some day
@@thedicetower I understand that. That’s not really what I mean. There’s a difference between saying “this game wasn’t very good for me, I don’t Ike it” and this kind of video. It’s much nicer to do it the first way but I don’t feel it’s as honest or real.
Thanks for your reviews! I have a lot of fun watching them, and i talk about you with my friends from time to time. I´m really sorry to say that i don´t listen to the podcast as much as i want to, but i really enjoy it to. Good work! i´ll be praying for you and your family.
Omg. My partner and son are upstairs watching a movie, and I'm downstairs watching Tom's apology statement, laughing to myself. I'm now starting to watch Tom's reviews just as much for the entertainment as well as the reviews. Plus we are getting bonus outtakes, man this is awesome! The Dice Tower video's are great entertainment in themselves. The funniest thing about this episode though, is that I think some of the people posting comments are actually taking this all seriously.... rotfl
I'll be honest, I dont know which review I liked more, this sarcastic one or the raging one.. both are excellent. Tom please keep up with the honest reviews, I love every one of them!
I don't think you should have had to apologise for giving a bad game a rating that it deserves, was it a bit over the top, maybe, but you saved me money when I was first getting into this hobby as I was thinking about it, I have since played it and you were spot in, it is dead! I saw you mention it again on your through the years video, which brought me back here and decided this time to leave a comment.
I would love to live in Fantasy Land with you, where I have all the time and money in the world to play every single game and make an individual judgement on them. But I don't. I go off what my instinct tells me. I was predisposed to hate this kind of game, and Tom only confirmed it when he did his brief review. I'm not going to sit here and tell you every single game Tom and I have diverged on - Lifeboats and Carcassone (HATE!!!) spring to mind, but we converge enough that I value his opinion.
Damn. . .you go Tom ! When you tossed the game off the roof I just lost it . . then showed the unedited bit at the end. . .man I dont think I'll get this game !
I have been a gamer for about 40 years, and have never heard of Tom until today (sorry). After seeing this video, I think I will check his review of every game I am thinking of buying.
The first time I saw this game reviewed was on, appropriately enough, Board To Death and I was impressed that Felicia even took the time to learn those Byzantine rules. Anyway, good job Tom. This video's hilarious.
Right in the face of all your critics! Awesome, Tom! The sacasm while you were explaining the "exciting" mechanisms could have been a bit stronger, but I still liked it. Very much humour in this video. Big thumb up for that!
I wish i knew what the comment was. Kudos to apologizing to your family, but you should not have to apologize for your honest review. You are a game reviewer, not promoter. Always appreciate your reviews
Unreal review piece. Again, this is why Tom is the number one man in the boardgame review world. The man is real. He actually wants his games to be enjoyable, not a mathematics quiz. Tom's my hero too! :D PS; hey Tom, I actually like Caylus a lot. :P Even chess. #P
This was hilarious. I have no opinion on this game, but I heard from Edward from Heavy Cardboard that you didn't like the game and well... I guess not. *toss... thump!* Awesome.
"I'm tellin' ya folks, this is REALLY exciting." Kids: "WoowWWooooww!!" I have to come back here at least once a year to replenish my soul with the entertainment provided by this video.
My football (soccer) team in Brazil (since I'm Brazilian) is called Vasco da Gama. When I saw the title of this video I thought with myself "I can't believe that Tom said something bad about Vasco!" LOL. Of course not! Then I realized how much I care about my beloved football club! ;)
This apology wasn't needed but a great deal of fun to watch. I feel like your review was perfectly fine. The points you made on this video only add to initial review. Keep reviewing boardgames the way you like Tom. Your opinion is spot on all the time, and I can't thank you enough for teaching us what separates good games from bad games.
Tom you're not only the best Board Game reviewer on planet earth but you're a good comedian too! I just couldn't stop laughing. Good job buddy and keep up the good work!
I'm 5 years late on this lol. You gave your honest opinion on a crappy game, no matter if the rules were explained poorly or not. Tough titties, that's how the world works. It's called freedom of speech. If you're a board game company and you're afraid of a bad review, don't bother making a product because there will always be someone (or everyone) that hates your game! Learn how to take criticism people and don't become cry babies when a well known reviewer doesn't like the same game you like. Tom, you're awesome! This "apology" was hilarious and maybe you should do something like this for all the games you don't like, just to the makers and fans of Vasco da Gama not feel as though they are being treated differently. XD
I love the subtle open box and find "Trash" inside....well played sir, well played.
I love that it's both sarcastic and in 240p, perfect for making the rhetorical point.
I just watched this again after not watching it for several months. Now that I "know" and understand Tom better, this is even better, as I have really picked up on all of the tongue-in-cheek-ness of it. Love the banana peel. This video is a true classic...
This is the first DT video I saw and it's what got me into not only to watch DT videos but also board games. thanks Tom for 7 years of fun.
Tom, I know I'm late to this one but this may be my favorite video of yours.
This video is gold.
PURE GOLD!
It was one of the videos that kept me coming back to the channel back in the early days (besides the new reviews. I always liked rewatching the more entertaining of his videos including several of the top tens they made early on.)

LOL. I thought this was for real until he mentioned "foremost reviewer of all the universe" lololol
It's funny that more people have watched this than the actual review.
Well, it is funnier.
Oh, I'm sure that no one at Dice Tower reads comments from videos this far back, but this is fantastic. A review like this once in awhile would be hilarious and would give Derek and Zee something to do during the week. LOL
oh, I almost forgot. The supporting cast in this episode were outstanding, there should be an oscar nomination here somewhere.
Awesome!!! :) not bad taste, just good humor :) Blessings to you and your family (not because of this video just in general)
Throwing it off the roof was priceless
Yeah I was actually waiting the whole video for that to happen!
I remember a picture of the smashed box, do I recall correctly?
Just one more example of the absolutely contagious amount of fun you show in your videos and podcasts! Hilarious light hearted retaliation! Keep up the great work buster.
Just found this thanks to Toms live stream Q&A...Best review ever:)
"Look at these! Numbers, from one to twenty... ON DISCS." hahahaha hilarious
So glad I watched this.
Formost reviewer of all the universe : )
I still love your work. You are awesome and my hero for getting me started on my board gaming journey.
That's one of the funniest board game's review I've seen so far! Loved it! :)

I love a lot of the dice tower videos but this one takes the cake.
Ohh Tom there is so much that I love about your style including the unapologetic nature personal opinion based reviews.
This video is right up there with you anti-unboxing video. If people don't get you or don't like what you do then that's a shame for them.

I wouldn't ever expect a video like this from TOM VASSEL.
Ok, I am just now seeing this and I know I am super late, but I linked a funny and fake Dan and Phil Games apology video on Twitter and someone linked this to me in response. OMG this is so great! This is the best clip on UA-cam...period. More apologies please!
your wife looks so morbid. almost deadpan i love it!!!
That game looks awful. I'm sure Tom's review was spot on.
i second that...
stevefett1 i mentioned in the first video that I actually felt a bit nauseated reading a pdf of the rules. Not joking.
Tom, you have gotten too PC over the years in your reviewing;) we need more of these honest reviews about awful board games and please, much more throwing of boxes (if it deserves it of course)!!! :D

You know that we tell you EXACTLY what we think about games, regardless of ties to companies.
@@thedicetower I understand that. That’s not really what I mean. There’s a difference between saying “this game wasn’t very good for me, I don’t Ike it” and this kind of video. It’s much nicer to do it the first way but I don’t feel it’s as honest or real.
@@thedicetower Haha I love that you're replying to comments on a 12 year old video!
Also this apology was hilarious then and it's still hilarious now.
Tom, this was genius. Make a stretch goal next kickstarter for a couple creative videos, I'm in! Fun!
Thanks for your reviews! I have a lot of fun watching them, and i talk about you with my friends from time to time. I´m really sorry to say that i don´t listen to the podcast as much as i want to, but i really enjoy it to. Good work! i´ll be praying for you and your family.

This is the most amusing Dice Tower video I've ever seen. :)
This was Classic TOM keep doing what you're doing....

How can a game with zero theme be insulting to the Portuguese or indeed anyone at all? Hilarious video. Especially the out-take at the end :-)
Damn. . .you go Tom ! When you tossed the game off the roof I just lost it . . then showed the unedited bit at the end. . .man I dont think I'll get this game !
LOL. Great follow-up. Loved the "press conference" with the shamed family at the start.
Just watched this video for the first time... Man, gotta love Tom for not giving a crap.
This is definitely the best thing I've seen by you so far. Great fun, and you're so confident replying to internet rage this way.
I have been a gamer for about 40 years, and have never heard of Tom until today (sorry). After seeing this video, I think I will check his review of every game I am thinking of buying.

Two apologetic thumbs up!
Right in the face of all your critics! Awesome, Tom!
The sacasm while you were explaining the "exciting" mechanisms could have been a bit stronger, but I still liked it.
Very much humour in this video. Big thumb up for that!
The ending was great but 6:36 made me laugh the most! Keep up the great work Tom.
I wish i knew what the comment was. Kudos to apologizing to your family, but you should not have to apologize for your honest review. You are a game reviewer, not promoter. Always appreciate your reviews
At 5:05 I was soooo hoping he was going to grab that stick in the background and do the Star Wars Kid routine....
I miss these days.
I love when he trolls everyone... and he included his family in the trolling loool
Tom, your reviews are always good! And I like them VERY much, you really do have to sate your honest opinion!
2021 and this video still slaps.
So I'd like to know..... Is there a copy of Vasco da Gama in the Dice Tower library?
For sure!
indeed... i love a personal style of telling things arent as good as people want it to be. At least you are honest... Good job.
My favorite review thus far made better. Bravo.
I loved your Vasco da Gama review. And this video is even besser! Great Work! :)
I busted out laughing when you tossed it off the roof. Great trolling, man! This was awesome!! xD
Unreal review piece. Again, this is why Tom is the number one man in the boardgame review world. The man is real. He actually wants his games to be enjoyable, not a mathematics quiz.
Tom's my hero too! :D
PS; hey Tom, I actually like Caylus a lot. :P Even chess. #P
I haven't watched the review since the game didn't look too exciting but all this controversy made me curious so I'm gonna watch it now
This was hilarious. I have no opinion on this game, but I heard from Edward from Heavy Cardboard that you didn't like the game and well... I guess not. *toss... thump!* Awesome.
This was fun to watch!
"I'm tellin' ya folks, this is REALLY exciting."

Hey, Tom, best review EVER! Genius!
You should take some Anger Management classes with Sam. The little girls too!
Man this was great stuff.

Maybe the game is not good but this video is a lot of fun. XD
Great review :) the ending made me smile...
What an idiotic society! You can not dislike a game.... sad.... 80 years ago, young guys were going to war...
Still love to watch it again and again :)
34 people LOVED Vasco de Gama..
Tom's best review...
"...and this makes the game VERY tense and exciting as I wonder, 'will that number go up or down by three'..."
Brilliant! LOL
this.. was.. epic.. two thumbs up!
Incredible video. I was laughing out loud the whole time!
you have now showed me how the game correctly works, and it still looks like a game i would not want to play.
Im glad to see that tom is giving an apology. Shows he's a good man.
OH MAN!! banana peel in the box had me in stitches..
Mrs Vasel is awesome on this video!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣, great work Mr. Vasel
Tom you're not only the best Board Game reviewer on planet earth but you're a good comedian too! I just couldn't stop laughing. Good job buddy and keep up the good work!
How many takes did it take to do the intro?
where were you when you were filming yourself throwing the game box away? the background seems so familiar to me...
I love the irony of this apology :p I second Ogma01 on his comment . This is YOUR OPINION. You kept true to it and that's the important thing
I love your vids. Keep going the good work. Thanks
You and your family Rock!
The best review ever!!! :)
