Jiu-jitsu greats like JJ Machado, Leo Santos, Shaolin Ribeiro and Marcelo Garcia are well known for their butterfly guards in competition. Covered in this video are some concepts that will help you be more successful from this position.
Remember to keep the upper body and lower body connection so there is tension in their body as if you’re straightening out a crooked string. Just like pulling two end points of a string, we can now cause an effect on that body and move it. If one side or the other is too loose, we can lose our ability to move that object.
Also, keep in mind that at least 3 of the 4 limbs should be under your control in order to truly utilize this type of butterfly guard sweep.

That was brilliant. Marcelo Garcia did the work. Kenny Florian did the communication. ...“Become the Floor.” Thank you.

    0:35 this is brilliant
"Denying opponent quality contact with the floor" to me means not letting opponent get a proper BASE.
I am so focused on my own BASE + POSTURE + CONNECTION.
But I also now realize that I can't just focus on optimizing my own base + posture + connection.
But I have to minimize my opponent's base + posture + connection.
    Thank you.

Random but Kenny is such a commentator I didn’t even realize he was a fighter in my early days of mma fandom. A black belt in the spoken word, as well as BJJ.

For Christmas I'd like Marcello's game to be transplanted into either Ryan Hall or Kenny. I love Marcelo but the clarity of Kenny and Ryan's instruction are top notch. I feel like Marcelo might just be too much of an intuitive expert to fully get it across. Just so we are clear though, Marcello is jiu jitsu.

Kenny, obviously most martial arts fans are familiar with you, as am I. You've never made much of an impression on me, but dude, this was amazing. Excellent breakdown, quality explanation and translating marcelo's movement to mimic him and explain it so well... damn dude awesome stuff!! Thank you! Gonna use this and you have a new fan.

Watched this again months after initially finding it, and it makes more sense now. Now I just have to learn the feel of this in real rolling situations. I like the part about taking a moment to address missed connections. I could see a lot of frustration with trying to practice this principle without that part. Thanks
