Jiu-jitsu greats like JJ Machado, Leo Santos, Shaolin Ribeiro and Marcelo Garcia are well known for their butterfly guards in competition. Covered in this video are some concepts that will help you be more successful from this position.
Remember to keep the upper body and lower body connection so there is tension in their body as if you’re straightening out a crooked string. Just like pulling two end points of a string, we can now cause an effect on that body and move it. If one side or the other is too loose, we can lose our ability to move that object.
Also, keep in mind that at least 3 of the 4 limbs should be under your control in order to truly utilize this type of butterfly guard sweep.

"Now, I'm essentially the floor." - Kenny Floorian
😋
That was brilliant. Marcelo Garcia did the work. Kenny Florian did the communication. ...“Become the Floor.” Thank you.
0:35 this is brilliant
"Denying opponent quality contact with the floor" to me means not letting opponent get a proper BASE.
I am so focused on my own BASE + POSTURE + CONNECTION.
But I also now realize that I can't just focus on optimizing my own base + posture + connection.
But I have to minimize my opponent's base + posture + connection.
Thank you.
Brilliantly explained as always. Great work Kenny!
Be the floor, take it away from your opponent. Simple and straightforward! Thank you, Kenny!
Is that like saying believe in the ball? Throw yourself?
1:52 " i cant move"
i felt that
Random but Kenny is such a commentator I didn’t even realize he was a fighter in my early days of mma fandom. A black belt in the spoken word, as well as BJJ.
For Christmas I'd like Marcello's game to be transplanted into either Ryan Hall or Kenny. I love Marcelo but the clarity of Kenny and Ryan's instruction are top notch. I feel like Marcelo might just be too much of an intuitive expert to fully get it across. Just so we are clear though, Marcello is jiu jitsu.
Holy macron, this will definitely help me out as a white belt
muchas Garcias señor
Been in the game for 23 years. This is an excellent bit of info. Brilliantly explained!
This reminds me of Ryan Hall talking about "stealing energy from your opponent and the floor", great concept Kenny!
Kenny, obviously most martial arts fans are familiar with you, as am I. You've never made much of an impression on me, but dude, this was amazing. Excellent breakdown, quality explanation and translating marcelo's movement to mimic him and explain it so well... damn dude awesome stuff!! Thank you! Gonna use this and you have a new fan.
Had you ever trained with Kenny for just 10 minutes you would’ve been beyond impressed and that’s just the bjj aspect !!
Dude, the way you explained the position was great. Love how you incorporate the questions when explaining the movements. You gave me a whole new perspective on how to incorporate this into showing the "why" a position works. Thank you Kenny!
What a brilliant simple explanation of the butterfly guard through example. 👏
This is GENIUS!! I NOW understand what I've been doing wrong. Thank you for sharing !!!
Love this video. Simple yet effective. Can't wait to start drilling and practicing this detail as I attempt a few moves from butterfly guard. Thanks!
Jack Shore completed a beautiful Butterfly guard to stand up, and clinch to the fence vs Timur Valiev. It was Elite for Shore!!!
😆👏
Super clear and well produced!
Yes!, Kenflo has a youtube channel! We need more of these mini seminar style videos
So now I am essentially the floor !!!
Josh is doing a great job hahaha Thanks for the video Kenny!
This is absolutely BRILLIANT!
Thank you Kenny!
Amazing details that are simple to learn when explained in such a great way🥋🙏
Thank you for the details Kenny.
Haha Kenny sounds like a lawyer questioning someone
I’m loving this channel so far. Really enjoying the technique breakdowns. - I’m up for an instructional for sure.
Really enjoyed this analysis Kenny. Changed the way I think about my goals (positionally)
Awesome concept delivered in concise way.
Thank you Kenny

Great vid Kenny 🙂
This was extremely helpful. Thank you kenflo 👊🏾
thank you Kenny!
Absolute Gold! Thank you for doing this Kenny Florian!
This was great details
Great detail and simple concept but difficult to perfect. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Kenflo! As an MMA enthusiast and also a battle bots enthusiast i have found my internet niche. Maybe next video you can talk about the wedge?
Best butterfly video I’ve ever seen. Thanks Ken-Flo!
Very nice detail.
Thanks for articulating so clearly. It really helps my game when I understand the theory/concept of a move/position/etc. Been a fan of yours since TUF, thanks KenFlo! Osss
fantastic instructional ! very well broken down and explained. please keep them coming :)
Disrupting opponent base, thank you :-)
Fantastic!!
Thank you, great concept to think about and practice.
Watched this again months after initially finding it, and it makes more sense now. Now I just have to learn the feel of this in real rolling situations. I like the part about taking a moment to address missed connections. I could see a lot of frustration with trying to practice this principle without that part. Thanks
So glad it’s resonating now. I think this will definitely help you with problem solving in the moment instead of attempting a bunch of “moves”.
Great breakdown
Awesome instructional
you explain stuff so beautifuly, it would be great to see some striking tutorials too
awsome dude , i belive this guard can be very very signficant in MMA and your tips have cleared up any doubts i had about it .
Great Thanks
Great vid
Well those Shoyorolls...just went up in demand.
Great 👍🏼 explanation - Ossss
Dude this made so much sense and is helping me so much!

Subbed.Got any tips for mount escape when they grab the head. I am good with escapes, but as soon as someone grabs my head, it's a stalemate. Got a hernia so cant use much power.
I just stumbled onto this channel. Sub immediately.
🙏
How to have butterfly guard like Marcelo Garcia:
Step 1: Be Marcelo Garcia
Step 2: Be the floor.
One of the things that I’ve been working on is trying to get off the center line. How does this idea come into play with trying to stay connected to their base?
Kenny Floorian.
Where you at, KenFlo? I want a piece
"Be water, my friend". - Bruce Lee (1971). ... "Be the floor, my friend" - Kenny Florian (2021)
Amazing videos Kenny! Keep them coming!! Question how important is flexibilty according to you for bjj? Wanna start out but im stiff as a board from lifting weights. Should i improve flexibilty first to avoid injury?
It certainly helps and is something that can be worked on but it is not a pre-requisite for starting or being successful. Thanks for the question, all the best.
Reddit crew checking in. Great work Kenny!
Thank you for doing so and leaving a message. 🙏👊
This really is an eye opener. I guess that’s why the sweep’s alternate alias is elevator sweep. The only way an elevator works is if it’s directly grounded under your feet. 👏
😮😮😮😮🔥🔥🔥🔥
Kenny, what are the chances you do a video with Ryan Hall?
Maybe we can make that happen at some point.
Be like water when striking be like floor when grappling
🤯
Floors are people too!
Dude go to his academy in ny an interview him 🔥👆👌🔥
Sadly, I’m not sure it’s up and running at the moment.
" Be floor my friend "
The floor is lava.
Limb Extension.
Cool. It's like a reverse grapevine.
Be the floor my friend.
I thought Butterfly hook is only effective when ur knee is bent less than 90 degrees tho??
Oh yeah? Well what about Heatch?
So the secret to the butterfly guard is using the butterfly guard.
Until now, I thought ryan hall was the wizard.
Oh no, Ryan definitely is!
I find this is one of the best ways in a street fight, to give people a false sense of safety. Roll them right into the pre dug hole. Game over!
Stay safe. Stay at home. Be the floor.
You just want to have good wadges
