  • Welcome back to Day 2 of the 2023 Scooter Cannonball! We are riding 348 miles from Lake Havasu to Winslow, AZ. This is an uncompressed (but not truly "raw") clip from the 9th segment of Day 2, riding to find Bonus Point 6 over 15 miles of rough gravel road.
This was the first official dirt section of the Cannonball this year, and it didn't fail to surprise many riders. The supposedly "well-graded gravel" road was anything but... very rough and covered with washboards. The biggest surprises were two fine powder/sand bogs that stopped everyone in their tracks. Several scooters went down in that section today, but I don't think there were any major injuries from it.
We had a great time chatting and calling out road hazards over our Cardo PackTalk EDGE communicators. Unfortunately, I didn't have my dedicated audio recorder running to capture the group communications today. I'll have more of the group commentary coming up in future episodes. 😉👍

i just went down a washboard road a few days ago because if a few videos i saw on this cannonball run. i never rode dirt until i got my trail and i need to hit the beach a few more times to learn sand riding better. but i hate the beach. then i'm going to start hitting more dirt roads. because like i said a few times i'm doing the 2025 if i have to do it on my trail.

It’s interesting to see the ADV150s seemed smoother on the video. I’m not sure if it was Doug or Tyler, but they are good on dirt and/or the ADV is much better on the gravel.
Cool to see how well the GoPro 360 stabilizes the image at 29 minutes in. A decade ago it wouldn’t have been watchable.
    Great video as always!

Agreed! The ADV150 handles much better on rough surfaces due to the wider tires and upgraded suspension. The addition of some small floorboards or footpegs toward the rear would be great for stand-up riding. 😉👍 --QM

WOW rough ride. awesome on screen graphics as usual. Best on youtube.

Thanks, Bob! The added graphics and multiple camera angles create a LOT more editing work, but I hope the results are worth the effort. 😉👍 --QM

Damn, that pcx on that bumpy road i can feel it in my backbone just watching the video :D

🤣 LOL! Yeah, I thought I might need to stop and pick up my kidneys a few times! The ergonomics on PCX don't allow the rider to stand up easily, so the jolts from all of those potholes and craters are sent straight through the tailbone into the spine. 😬 --QM

man! , guy dragging his feet is scaring me to death

Agreed! Mike is an older rider (mid-70s, I think). I think he was trying to give himself the fastest possible foot-to-ground time in case the scooter started to wash out in the gravel. He was wearing proper motorcycle boots, so they provided some level of toe and ankle protection. Personally, I still wouldn't dangle my feet unless it was deep sand/gravel and below 15 mph. 😉👍 --QM

Yeah that section makes a good case for the ADV 160 doesnt jt. I am relying heavily on the information you provide to make the decision between the PCX and the ADV. Theres a lot of good information in there from when you picked up Kevin's but i would love to see some updated comparison info. In any event i hope you're getting and hope you have a Merry Christmas and happy new year. Thank you for all you do!

This section would be so nice if you were to have like a CRF300,some lightweight dirtbike. Or maybe even the Trail125,to make it SCBR compliant

Would the Honda Adv150 be better on this section of road? Also hope you can review the newer HoNda Adv160 Scooter ASAP. I’m very interested in it but so far no well known USA reviewers have tested it yet on UA-cam,-be the 1st to do so !!!

Yes, the ADV150 (or 160) perform very well on these types of roads. The rear suspension is still a bit rough, but the damping is better overall. The wider tires and longer suspension stroke are also huge benefits over the PCX.
I'm tentatively planning to get an ADV160 next year, and that might be my 2025 Scooter Cannonball steed... we'll see! Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

Three things about this video drive me crazy. 1. Someone doesn't know how to operate a road maintainer! 2. Whoever said that this road was well maintained is either blind or the spouse of the road maintainer operator!! 3. Dude on Honda Forza dragging your boots at 25mph isn't going to keep you up. If the wheels are turning KEEP YOU FEET UP! That is all.

The powder pits toward the end were tons of fun. Several riders hit those pits at full speed (35+ mph) and went over their handlebars. 🤯
Luckily, we saw other stopped riders sitting in the first one, so we slowed in anticipation. The second one was a bit of a surprise, but we managed to keep it upright. One of the riders warned us to stay left for that second trap, but I couldn't hear him through my earplugs. 😉👍 --QM
