- This is a short follow-up video to my Google Nest Camera review I posted a few days ago. While making that video, I noticed that the nighttime video quality of the older Google Nest Outdoor Camera looked much better. Video’s from the new Google Nest Camera (with battery) were foggy and less detailed. I thought the camera was to blame, but something else was actually happening. Special thanks to TOFUROBOTS who pointed out in the comments that the Wasserstein anti-theft mount might be the cause for this. Here's my simple solution to improve your Google Nest Camera's video quality at night!

I just purchased one on Amazon and the top of the mount is now black. Looks like the manufacturer fixed it.
Great to hear this Hoang!
Perfect! The black insert may also prevent excessive glare during the daytime. Last week I made a favorable comment about your review, and this adds another 👍. So I went ahead and subscribed to your channel today. I have purchased some previous accessories from that same company that made the hood.
Thanks a lot Daniel 😄 Glad that I could help you with this video and I’ll do my best to make more interesting videos. Thanks for your subscription! 🥳
Good video and very informative, thank you. I would have liked to see the night vision of the old camera compared to the new, without the anti-theft mount. Perhaps trimming off the overhang will make it even better?
Thank you Nigel! I am thinking of a follow up video about the Google Nest Camera and I will try to incorporate your suggestion!
100% worked this is the silliest Fix and thank you for making this video
Currently 3D printing a dark grey hood for my camera in the backyard. Glad I didn't choose white for the print, thank you for the video!
If I had a house or condo, I'd still buy Nest because I'm so invested and prefer to stay aligned with my ecosystem. BUT, it is not good for a company if shortly after releasing a product people need to "fix" things with bubble gum and tape to make it work to a standard level. First you buy the camera which is reputedly above average market rate, then, if you care about spot-theft (not that I would be), you have to buy a separate contraption to secure it, and then, if you care about seeing things well at night, you have to buy some plastic foamy thing and cut it up with scissors etc., to fit in. This just isn't good Google. Just isn't. :/
It’s also so simple to test it in the factory before shipping! I don’t understand why they didn’t do that in the first place 😒
Thanks for sharing. Just got my camera's today and will make this fix before I install.
Bought a wassertein mount this week and it has the black insert pre-installed
Great video, I’ll give this a try tomorrow - thanks!
Fascinating discovery. Thank you for sharing it! I wonder if spray painting the inside of housing black would work equally well.
Thank you Gnexjeff! I wanted to use spray paint at first, but didn’t have any. So it was either buying paint at the local store for 10$ or use this for free 😃
Awesome!!' I just did it with non-glossy black vinyl and it worked totally awesome, thank you for Sharing!
Awesome! Thank you for your message and I’m glad that it helped! 😁
@@Josh-White Hey Josh! have you set up to power over the Internet with your nest cam battery using The wasserstein POE adapter? I just received my adapter cables and cannot seem to get them to work!!
Hi LA2V, I didn’t know about this power solution for our Nest Camera so I took a look at their website. It looks as a good alternative power solution, also weatherproof. But inside and outside our house we have regular power outlets, so that would be my choice. Hopefully you can find a way to make your POE adapter work!
Black electrical tape would've done the job just fine.
Off course! But I didn’t have it at the time 😆
It would, but black felt may be even better (non-reflective)
Excellent explanation
You should look at the black plastic in front of the camera at night to make sure it still looks black. I have some black clothing that looks white in infrared.
Hi Matt V, thanks for sharing this tip and for leaving a comment. If I make another follow-up video about the Google Nest camera, I'll pay attention to your tip!
or use a black electrical tape? Love your backyard btw😀
Thank you Indy Lex!! Black electrical tape will also do the trick, smart idea!
Hello. Great video! I am thinking of buying the anti theft accessories, but I am not sure how it works. I get that "sleeve" makes it harder to steal but the camera will still come out from the sleeve...no?
No the sleeve is connected to the wall through an iron wire. It is simple but effective. The sleeve won’t come off because you screw it tight while also connecting the sleeve to the iron wire.
Also great for a drop safety!!
I experience the blur but my Wasserstein anti-theft mount already has a black inside. Problem NOT fixed. I removed the mount entirely as I want a clear image.
Hi Josh
Just got mine from Amazon and the inside collar was already blacked out, I guess Amazon listened to you
Who knows, they may have actually listened! Thanks for letting me know! Cheers!
Just got a new version looks like they've been listening to everyone's complaints It comes painted black now. No reviews yet on this Amazon version.
Well, not painted but little black piece of paper/tape
Haven’t seen those yet but sounds promising.
I assume black electrical tape or gorilla tape work just as effectively?
Wederom bedankt!
Informative
Who's _not so bright_ idea was it, to design a roof over the Nest camera anyway? It doesn't need a roof. The camera is weather resistant. They can make that locking device without the roof and it would still work for the purposes intended. And do people know that they don't even need that locking device? Google replaces these things for free if stolen. And, you don't have to use their magnetic mount. If you're afraid of high winds, birds, or squirrels, knocking the camera from off its magnet. You can use a previous mount from your previous security cameras (if you had any.) Anyway, I hope this helped someone.
The camera doesn't switch on unless it's magnetised to something/the mount, so you can't use old mounts.
Does it effect the WiFi signal ? After installing it, my cams have trouble connecting. I didn’t have this issue before.
Do you mean the mount leads to wifi interference? This doesn't happen with us, but it's a shame that you are bothered by it. Could it also have something to do with the range of your router?
Great video! Do you have an email that I can reach out to for a possible collab for nest accessories?
A half pint of black paint is just $5.00... for now.
Just make sure it’s suitable for plasic!
I don’t recommend this camera very bad decision try another brand
The camera is garbage!
