    When i got out of the army. I was stationed on frt Richardson. The rifle i had was a winchester 30-30. I got 2 bull moose. And a bunch of caribou. 1 shot kills. I know my rifle. Mine was given to me for Christmas in 1978. It has a side mounted scope. 1-5 leupold scope. And is very accurate. And worked for me.God bless 😊

      People always go to the new cool, hip caliber these days. I'm a stickler for the old tried and true. I've used 270 for everything you can think of and it just works. I've learned that Remington 700 like the back of my hand. 30-30 is also just a tried and true caliber. I love a classic lever gun in 30-30.

    As an old guy that knows stuff, I’ll say your suggestions are pretty solid in reasoning and common sense. The old Roark line about ‘ use enough gun ‘ hits home when talking about stuff that will shred and eat you and your wife and kids. Use the biggest stick that you can hit comfortably with, and ammo that that makes really deep big holes. For selective hunting scenarios.270 Win. works fine as does anything bigger if you put the pill where it needs to go. Only good hits count, and strive to make it the first one. Cheers on great content and advice.

    Many small towns have limited stock of ammunition, and if you’re travelling and your ammunition gets misplaced , you may not be able to purchase uncommon cartridges.
    You can always find .12g , almost always .308, 30-06 and .22.
    It’s interesting when travelling remote places to check the local hardware/sporting goods/trading post to see what ammunition is available.

      One of my doctors goes to Alaska quite a bit for fishing and hunting. His main rifle is 30-06 mostly because you can find 30-06 every two feet in AL. I think he's exaggerating a bit. I see people putting all their ammo in one check-in bag at the airport. Split up your clothes and ammo in transit. Same in the field. I don't carry all ammo in one bag. Some is attached to my belt, some to harness or equipment vest, some in sling bag or backpack.
      My "back up" rifle is a Rossi .454 Casull 20" barrel. Beautiful well balanced with tremendous power. Kicks like 2 mules but muzzle rise is not very high. THAT gun and ammo I'd take extraordinary precautions to not loose it, which leads to my other point...take 3 times more ammo than you think.

    I watched a video with Phil Shoemaker on Ron Spomer, concerning What handguns and rifles he recommends. Apparently he and all of his family have been guides in Alaska for brown bear hunts for decades. they all carry 357 magnum revolvers. He said the 10 is fine and 44s are much better if you can shoot it well. Few can. He said a hard cast 38 would probably kill one. He killed one with a 9 loaded with Buffalo Bore. He also said bring what hunting rifle you shoot well. He has a 45-70 at his back door and likes it for guides, but recommends longer barreled high power rifles for the hunters. He wouldn’t disagree with you about the 30-06. That seems to be good at about everything. Go figure, the 357 magnum and the 30-06. It’s amazing these old work horses just keep working. Thanks for the video.

    30-30 loaded with 190g going 1850fps delivers around 1444ftlb. That’s hotter than most 44 magnum loads and far easer to shoot acutely. Add your favorite optic and there are serious advantages.
    Is 30-30 the best choice in bear country? No it’s not, but it’s more effective than a 44mag and that’s been a baseline for bear defense for close to a century.

      I don't have a 30-30 but I do have a 44 mag lever. I was thinking the same as you. I not sure, but I'm fairly certain a 30-30 has more energy than the 44 mag at all distances in most loadings, so why would a 44 handgun be ok, but not a 30-30?

    • @the_watcher_abc
      @the_watcher_abc 9 місяців тому +4

      @@justme7478 I believe the issue has been the ammunition available. A 150 grain soft point going 2200fps will produce 1600ftlb, which is way better energy than most 44mags. The issue is with the bullets available. A soft point 150 grain will not penetrate enough to be an effective bear stopper.

    • @scottcrawford3745
      @scottcrawford3745 6 місяців тому +1

      @@justme7478 I think the .44 Rem Mag gets the nod so often is because it's a handgun round. Most people associate it with a 5 or 6 shot revolver on your hip for that "close encounter" when your rifle is still in your tent/ leaning against a tree...
      Any round will perform slightly better in a longer barrel, and a .44 mag lever-gun will crank them out as fast as you can ratchet that lever. Nothing wrong with that either, and anything is better than nothing... But when more powerful options exist, (.444 Marlin, .45-70, .375 Win, .350 Legend, etc.) in the same form factor, I'd opt for the bigger stick.
      But the bottom line is: "Run what ya brung". " Beware the man with only one rifle; for he is likely to be very good with it...".

    You might ask what the purpose is in coming to Alaska? If you're moving here, any hunting rifle from 30.06 on up is what you want to bring. The caveat being that you want that rifle mounted with an LPVO in 1x4, 1x6, etc, because if you don't have 1x you're blind at close range and ... bears. If you're coming up for a summer fishing/sight-seeing trip then a shotgun is absolutely the best choice (though, as you say a .45/70 lever gun is also a great choice). As always, people need to understand that summer bears are pretty damned docile because they're gorged on salmon. Spring and fall bears are more problematic. If you're spending time on the rivers you will deal with 100 threat displays before you ever are in danger from a bear. Don't shoot at bears making a threat display. That bear has already decided he doesn't want to hurt you, so just back away as he asks. If you shoot such a bear, the fish and feathers people will slap you with about 10k in fines, confiscate your gun and possibly stick you in jail for a while. It's not worth it. Just understand that threat displays are common, and they are never a prelude to an attack.

    The whole debate on what you should carry while fly fishing in Grizzly country seems to bring heavy emotion.
    I've heard getting that first shot on target is the most important because you won't get another. I've heard second hand from a source I trust, two separate occasions near Yellowstone (they spoke to the actual victims) they never had a chance to get a shot off and were attacked. They obviously both survived to tell their story less body parts and a face.

Both also carry bear spray for when a bear needs a little less coaxing to go away. Archery season: one of the above on the hip or in the chest holster along with a short 12 gauge with 3” slugs for the guy doing the bugling. Rifle season: one on the hip or chest along with a 7mm STW. Have had many griz encounters here. Myself I haven’t had to shoot one in MT. Sprayed one year before last. Had a hunting partner kill one with a 10mm about 5 years ago. The best bear encounter is the one where all you need is binoculars. Even for Montana I agree with most of what you say. My suggestion is anything less than a 25-06 you don't really want to hunt with here, and anything smaller than .357 magnum you don't want to rely on for predator protection. Sure I've seen elk taken with a .243, and bear with a 6.5 but those were exceptional marksmen. Us regular guys should lean on power not placement. I hunt with a .270 or .50 cal black powder. The first deer I ever got was with a 30-30. I love my. 410 for turkey, quail, pheasant, and grouse/ ptarmigans. Got the .380 for town and 10 for the woods. The only thing I will say is that the .410 and .380 make good camp guns for my lady. O'Connor certainly knew hunting, but he didn't really know ballistics. Nearly all modern bottle-neck cartridges are within 1 - 5" of each other in ballistic arc out to 300 yards when zeroed at 200 yards. 270 Win is one of the flatter ones, though not the flattest, and certainly not so much flatter than the rest as to make any practical difference at ordinary shooting distances.

      @@brentsmock1044 group size is a different metric than ballistic arc. a shooter who knows what he's doing, combined with a good rifle and ammo suited for it can produce 1" groups at 100 yards on the regular, irrespective of cartridge selection. O'Connor's contention is that 270 Win is particularly flat shooting. It is flat-shooting, but so are 7mm RM, 280AI, 30-06, 6.5 CM, 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser, and a number of other non-magnum cartridges.
      A 165 gr bullet launched out of a 30-06 at 2900 fps, zeroed at 200, is a little more than 7" low at 300 yards. A 140 bullet launched at 2900 fps out of a 270, zeroed at 200 yards, is also a little more than 7" low at 300 yards. 270 Win is a couple tenths of an inch flatter, certainly within the margin of error for all shooters. It's a meaningless difference.
      270 Win isn' bad, but I can think of a half dozen cartridges I'd feel more comfortable taking on a hunt for big-bodied animals like elk, moose, and grizzly. A wider, heavier bullet in most cases gives a higher probability of a quick, clean kill.
      Inside 300 yards, I'll take my 9.3x62 with its 286 gr bullets at 2450 fps over any other cartridge made.

      Until Chuke chimes in, I'll add that if you can discharge .44 Mag from a short, light and handy (trapper-length 16" barrel), it'd sure be an effective firearm at close ranges. Marlin offered one in their 1894 (revolver cartridge action short receiver) before Remington went belly up, and now Ruger-Marlin offers one! Winchester had one in the 1894 AE (Win's 1894 is a longer action that was their 1892).
      But, if you can have a long gun (shoulder-fired) then have something with more smash and penetration like .45-70... or one of your bolt rifles in aught-six or a pointy-bullet magnum. 44 Mag is more than likely mentioned for use in a handgun, as in, it is a last resort.

    I live in northern Minnesota. Whenever I'm out in the woods I have either my SOCOM 16 or my 12 gauge, and my 10MM. As a backup, I have a .357 MAG. I've been considering about packing my Five Seven (I have a Ruger), which all goes along with the K-Bar on my belt.

    The main thing to consider is what are you capable of using well. As the saying goes, a hit with a .22 beats a miss with a .44. I’ve heard of guys constantly taking out grizzlies with .222 swift, mainly because they were very adept with it. Conversely, I’ve known a few people who arrived to Alaska with newly purchased .338 Win Mag rifles thinking that’s what they needed, only to get discouraged when they actually shot it at the range. 30-06 is generally an excellent choice for anything on four legs
    Within Anchorage, a .380 auto or .38 special J-frame will suffice if your daily activities don’t include cavorting with shady elements or venturing into those small areas where the denizens of the underground inhabit in the wee hours of night.
    If the outdoors is your thing, then any .357, .44 magnum, 45 long Colt revolver, 10mm, 45 ACP auto-pistol carried on a chest rig is the recommended (and highly fashionable) way to go.
    45-70’s and 12 gauge shotguns can become quite cumbersome on a hike. Believe me on this, I know from experience.

      @netpackrat 9 місяців тому

      A lot of the natives up here favor the .22 centerfires but the rest of us shouldn't be basing our choices on that. Out in some of the villages there is a shall we say, more cavalier attitude towards the need to dispatch game in a humane fashion.

      @@veroman007I heard a story about an old lady who killed the record brown bar with a 22 shot to the dome, in the 1950s I believe, is it fact? I don’t know but the less powerful your weapon/ammo, the more you need to have perfect placement and or luck. Here in AZ I might just have a 10 on me and if my camping buddy has nothing I’ll give her a 9 to put on her hip. In most cases it’s just a peace of mind thing but a guy was sipping coffee on his porch in Prescott a while back and he got pulled of his porch and murdered by a black bear, a few neighbors tried to scare the bear off of him before a neighbor drove by with a gun and ended it but it was too late, don’t be that person in bear country with nothing but a cell phone, is my advice lol

    Yes the 45-70 is harder hitting than the 30-30 but history in Alaska and Canada says its
    plenty gun. Ammo cost as well. Like you said if its all you have its better then a sharp stick. I watched some old Alaskan native living and hunting videos on UA-cam and the 30.30 and .22 hornet were very popular between 50-80 yrs ago, plus the .223 is still popular among natives on a budget. I wouldn't mention coming from New York !

    I have a Remington 870 SuperMag (turkey gun), but I built it as a 12g that will eat anything. It’s a defensive build with a 25” barrel, holds 11rds of 2.75 flavor shells. So 3.5” guns have a place anywhere. Remember just because it’s a 3.5” chamber doesn’t mean it can’t sling shorter slugs such as Brenneke Black Magic
