I've seen interviews with cast members saying that Joel Schumacher would direct scenes for Batman & Robin by saying things like "Remember, we're making a kids' movie..." Or "It's a toy commercial..." Which always has this sense of a director totally yielding to studio mandates. Given that he could easily crank out comparatively serious films in general and knew how to play with genre tropes, and there are deleted scenes showing he originally intended to make a more serious version of Batman Forever, so I'd have been willing to give Joel Schumacher a chance at a more serious Batman installment.
He quite easily could've made a dark Batman movie if that's what the studio wanted. Fans always misdirect their grievances at actors and directors, when the fault almost always lies with the studio with big productions.
@@Bubba__Sawyer I don't know that I would say "almost always", as I can name some big franchises where the auteurs definitely ran amuck. Acting as the figurative human shield for the writers and actors. And I think it's being reevaluated now, but it definitely (and I think unfairly) hurt Schumacher at the time.
That´s because WB ordered in fact, Joel Schumacher to make toy commercial of a movie. Remember that car chase sequence in "Batman & Robin" between the Batmoblie and Mr. Freeze´s vehicle? That was not in the original script, but the toy company who made all the merchandise for the movie, had made a Mr.Freeze toy car. So, WB ordered the script to be re-written and include a car chase that features this thing, while they were already in production. The reason why Tim Burton was fired, was because "Batman Returns" was "too dark" for kids and therefore they sold less toys.
