    I researched both and ended up going for the League of Dungeoneers. Sounded like more of the game that I wanted. Still waiting for delivery. The amount of communication that the designer Michael has been doing during/after the kickstarter has been amazing. I would recommend the game just from the communication. If he takes that much care in communication than I know he took even more care in creating the game.

    I was deep into League of Dungeoneers when my copy of Dungeon Universalis arrived. I couldn't see myself being able to give the same amount of time to it, so I sold it on, without even trying it. I love League of Dungeoneers and can see myself spending many happy hours with it. And I get to use the miniatures that I already have. My number one game, without a doubt.

    I chose to back the reprint of LoD. Can't wait to get my copy. I watched a lot of content for LoD and DU. I like the look of LoD more. It looks more old-school to me. Maybe a bit less fiddly. I can't tell you enough, how helpful your coverage of all these types of games has been for me as I try to decide where to invest my time and money. Keep up the great work, Rob.

    I `ll keep both. But I am playing Dengeoneers more. You simply can use all that tiles and standees for lot of other things too. Dungeoneers for me seems more playable just now as I said but just now it`s impossible to get rid one of them. They both should be in every dungeon crawler and rpg collection.

    I have been debating to get either of these a lot. Thank you for making this video. I have watched multiple video playthroughs of both. But with DU, there just seems to be SO many "if so do this" and "if that do this, except that" type rules. I don't think I or my group could get through a single battle in DU without forgetting the rules or messing them up. Seems you have to be a "rules accountant" to play.

    I went all in on both games and they both seem amazing. Realistically I feel there are very few people who have actually played both these games enough to answer this question. Allot of channels will talk about these games but did they read the rules and play enough of it to say which is better? The rules alone are legit novels! Never mind researching rules and actually playing. I do think they seem to be fantastic but I haven’t played either one enough to make that call.

    LoD for me, but I can see where someone would prefer DU. DU is more like playing a RPG system, where LoD gets to the point a lot quicker, with dungeon crawls and hex crawling to the next dungeon. I don’t need the extra RPG mechanics in DU. If I want that, I’ll play a TTRPG that’s not a board game.
    DU is really awesome though, and I’m glad the option between these two is a win no matter which one you pick.

    I got LoD and really enjoyed it last year, I am holding off for the expansion and improved rulebook before diving back in. I also received DUN 1.3 all-in at Christmas and just not had the time to table it yet but really looking forward to it. I wonder if DUN benefits from having 3 printing's and improvements already over LoD only having 1 so far. Both have similar issues if you want to look for faults around storage solutions and to a lesser extent rulebooks, however this is not CMON, Awaken Realms or CTG publishing these games with huge teams and I am so impressed by what 1 or a handful of people can produce with passion. Your recent video on DUN has made me want to get it to the table next.

    I admit that I was really torn over both on my search for the more quintessential RPG-in-a-box game. I looked hard at reviews of both, and was happy that both were more or less true labors-of-love from independent designers, whom I trust for a better experience than many bigger-name publishers that can implement ideas by committee and push mainstream publishing biases that end up watering down their games. I still feel very let down by what Bardsung could have been compared to what it ended up being, for example.
    Either way, I ended up backing LoD, although the decision was not by any means a pushover. I simply felt (based on my research) that DU just was more of a lifestyle game, much more akin to an actual RPG -- and while that was good, it also seemed to require a lot more prepwork and more greatly benefitted from a dedicated gamemaster than LoD. Not that there's anything wrong with that, and I have tremendous respect for the DU team and what they've built. But for my personal experience, which is me and my wife, I felt that LoD would provide us a better ongoing experience. After receiving the latest crowdfunded campaign, I have been very happy with the production quality and am looking forward to really breaking into LoD.

    Such a tough choice, but I think I'd have to go with League of Dungeoneers. The random factor of LoD adds a lot for me, being able to just start up a character and make my own story up as I go, combined with the dungeon and loot randomization, it just does something for me that Dungeon Universalis lacks. I do appreciate the expanded bestiary and character building of DUN, and the incredible variety offered in its ruleset and progression, but I've also had an easier time getting people unfamiliar with either into LoD; I think there is just more familiarity for D&D/Pathfinder players with LoD over DUN, not sure why since I'm not really a TTRPG player, but something about it clicks much quicker with my D&D/Pathfinder friends. Luckily I don't have to pick one over the other, I think these are two games that should be in every RPG+dungeon crawl fan's collection if they can manage it, but I do find myself pulling LoD out more often personally. Can't wait for my 2nd edition to arrive shortly!

    I put a lot of time into choosing one big dungeon crawl game. I haven't played either of LOD or DU yet because the game I chose has not been delivered yet, but from the play-through videos & reading the rules of both, League of Dungeoneers is the game. It was an easy choice. When I was playing Magic Realm & Squad Leader in the 1970s, I likely would have wanted all of the options of DU. I no longer have that brain, after two strokes. I read some of the DU rules & my eyes glazed over. League of Dungeoneers' rules were easy for me to grok, and I'll be able to play it once (some of) the pieces are punched out.

    Noooo ... don't make me choose only one! I'll try to answer. I own both, have played LoD and getting my party up to level 8 and having a great time. Ordered the expansion via the recent Kickstarter. DuN I received about a month ago and have made it through the first two missions and am still enjoying learning but very new to the game. Guess I'd choose DuN because I have a lot to learn and a lot of game left to enjoy vs. LoD where I've experienced the bulk of the base game already. I may change my decision later after I've played more DuN! I do like that everything in LoD is fairly self-contained - everything is there, no thinking about what to buy or not buy etc.;however, I've graduated to the point of being able to handle (hopefully) all that DuN throws my way. Plus LoD gets a little too easy once your party is established, not that one can't house rule around that.

  • @epone3488
    @epone3488 3 місяці тому

    One of the keys to this decision is definitely the MODE of play you chose. Universalis is at its best in ttrpg in a box mode playing the campaigns with a GM. As a result it solos less well by a smidge although the app supports is a boon to coop and solo play in many ways. League has outstanding solo and coop PICK-UP game support (everyone didn't turn up for D&D no problem League time) its rules overhead is lower then Universalis too. If I had a group that wanted a boxed campaign game that we would play on the reg in a similar way to GLoomFrost, Univesalis is it. If I had a group that wanted a more freeform Warhammer quest esque game where character advancement was king and it was the dungeon-crawling over story (emergent story of the party and the world) League would be the pick.

    If DUN appeals, the rules are a hurdle that you need to put effort into learning to overcome . However once learnt the combat is so dynamic, the game is so rich and rewarding that the effort is so worth it. If you like deep, crunchy dungeon crawler campaign games DUN is awesome! 🤩

I look at my collection and some of the games I know will never see the table and/or I wonder why I got it. Some I've enjoyed but wouldn't loose sleep if they left the collection. However, there are a few that I don't regret and will never get rid of, one being Shadows of Brimstone (THANKS ROB!!!). The other two being League of Dungeoneers and Dungeon Universalis. I currently play DUN with friends on a weekly basis and I’ll tell you, we are totally hooked on this game. The strategy during combat is amazing and like nothing I’ve seen before. The game is difficult to grasp, and it has a ton of rules, but as we all grasp those rules through play time, the game flows so well! It is the ultimate experience in Dungeon Crawls.
    I can’t wait to try LoD! We are deluxifying DUN with minis and terrain, and it’s all compatible with LoD. The community for these two games is also growing. For me they are the fantastic designs that are top of the tree for Dungeon crawl games. The rule sets are so strong that you can leave rules out, make mistakes, and it won’t matter. The game won’t be broken. Both will say from a collector perspective. But if I had to keep one it would be DUN only because it was the original. Thanks as always for the work on the vid’s Rob.
