I much prefer this cage over the SmallRig one. The cold shoe on the SmallRig only allows for one way insertion; it's blocked on one side. Totally useless for some accessories like one of the DJI directional mics. This one is open on both sides.
The other problem I have with the SmallRig is the top mounting arm coming over the right side of the camera, over the buttons. Although we lose some mounting holes with the Neewer version it just looks cleaner, and the top controls are still freely accessible. Plus it adds a little bulk to the grip on the right side.

Good job on the review. One question that I have. How long is the HDMI cable for the monitor hookup? I'm just getting started using my R 50. Got some good lenses, will start with the video side soon. Have you had any problems with heat? How long does the battery last. I'm thinking about using a power pack from an RC racing model. Same voltage with a lot of capacity. Connected to a dummy battery. Should last a long while.
I bought a short one that's coiled and it looked really youtubery 😂😂 but it wasn't practical because if you turned the monitor around the cable wasn't long enough. Then I just bought a regular straight one that's about 1 metre. I have no problems with over heating but don't record the very long periods. Maybe 20 minutes at a time. Battery life is quite good but I have 3 batteries. Sounds like you will have fun Jerry rigging your battery solution 😂 thanks for watching
Is the grip better to hold using one hand only? R50 grip is very small. I would buy case just if it gives better grip for right hand.
