Feeling bored so starts to read the lowest review, and then instantly checks their favorites to judge their taste…
He’s just like me😭😭😭
Matt Johnson roasting Under The Silver Lake and Beau is Afraid was uncalled for and hilarious lmao
@@i_so_late he's probably friends with them to a degree and is just busting chops. That or he doesn't care. Funny regardless
He did a Q&A after a screening of Blackberry in Chicago last week and started off by roasting Beau is Afraid unprompted for at least 2 minutes straight 😂
@@WhySoAwkward What did he say about it? Like what didn't he like about it?
@@WhySoAwkward i need to hear about this lmao
I love Ari aster but Beau is afraid is a frustrating and terrible movie. Great moments, but mostly bad. It deserves all the roasts lololol
Reads bad review > goes to check top 4 to invalidate opinion > profit
this guy is also hilarious as hell
I love how hilariously pessimistic he is in the face of good reviews
bro was so unfiltered for this one lmao
"More like blandberry"
It was right there.
I was thinking "WackBerry"
@@McGillForRealliterally anything is more clever than midberry lmao
I thought of “decaf berry” but it doesn’t roll off the tongue too well.
@@sickrandy2946 I think it's supposed to be low-effort and on trend with calling everything "mid"
@@pex3 yeah well that makes it even worse lmao
I disagree with almost everything he said, but this is the energy I’ve been missing. Let the teeth come out! Finally a filmmaker who’s not afraid to talk shit
He’s just a film snob with a controversial opinion or two under his belt like all of us. Love that he’s not afraid to shit talk, he’s got a good spirit. It’s not like a revolutionary or anything but it’s refreshing when a film maker is not all peaches and cream about film. Nirvanna The Band The Show is a great stab at geek culture and unabashed obsessions
Yes, filmmakers are famous for NOT talking shit. HAHAHAHAHA!
The fact that it's kinda mindless sh*t is what bothers me. He guested on Sardonicast and said that Under The Silver Lake just had pacing/structural issues that could have been tightened in editing. Now he's devolved to just saying it's worthless outside of Garfield's performance with no real justification behind it.
@@tekkenchampion832 interesting you think he's a film snob, the way he talks about movies feels the exact opposite to me lol, laid back and simple, you can see what kind of stuff he enjoys rather than values like youre looking through glass
2:37 “this..this is a failed diss”
God I love Matt Johnson.
Love the Unforgivable reference at the end. A LEAN NIGHT
WHAT YALL WATCHING HOES?
The Legend of Bagger Vance!
GET DAT BULL OFF DA TV….I BROUGHT A COUPLE OF DVDS OVER
He also included those in his Sight & Sound top ten lol
going back to Unforgivable like a decade later after having seen a couple of David Lean films I finally got how insanely funny that line was
He came in hot with this. Hats off to him.
I love how unphased this dude reads everything. He is hardened.
He has that I-don't-give-a-fuck energy I need more of in my life
Go work on a film set for a couple of years - everyone is like that.
Matt Johnson is legitimately one of my favorite filmmakers working today, I hope black Berry is super successful so he gets to make more movies! If anyone here hasn’t checked out his other work PLEASE do so, The Dirties, Operation Avalanche, Nirvana The Band The Show
Can you explain why he’s one of your favorite directors working now?
And Matt and Bird Break Loose!
He only has made like three movies and apart from this one, they all have mediocre reviews, how is he your favorite working today.💀
@@MamadNobari lol you haven’t even seen them. There’s his tv show too which is amazing. His stuff really hit me on a level that made me understand how to make movies and he helped me find what my style is
@@AlexLeyba1 Fair enough
Clearly did this one too early bring this man back when it’s wide released I say! I want him to read more bad reviews
we may do part two, watch this space
@@LetterboxdHQ please do it. This is your most popular recent video, the follow-up would be gold!
"when the movie comes out the reviews are gonna plumettttt" I like how self aware he is. Can't wait to see this movie
It actually went up 😂
Yeah it went from 3.7 to 3.9 lol
Matt Johnson saying his top 4 movies would be the same 3 movies the unforgiveable video guy brought over in that video… what an incredible reference
What do you mean
@@MichaEl-hl7pp google "a lean night"
His top 4 is absolutely unforgivable
Such a deep cut
A LEAN NIGHT.
the "dating site" bit made me genuinely laugh out loud
This is what I've wanted from all of these videos. Have some fun with it!
“this guy is looking to pick up girls” was legit what went through my head as well
Holy shit the balls to go after Spielberg at the end like that
In lieu of the third season of NTBTS, i'm gonna need Matt to just do this every week
This dude is funny af. Def gonna watch the movie. Coming in as a huge sunny fan
Love these videos of director's reading their Letterboxd reviews. Keep them coming.
Roasting Magic Mike XXL and Before Sunrise and thinking they were a troll was unforgivable
love your reviews dude
Dr. Zhivago, Brief Encounter and Bridge on the River Kwai? Sounds like a lean night to me. Genius reference.
Literally making his Letterboxd top 4 a reference to a decade old youtube video... Unforgivable!
i love how he just starts reviewing the films that people have favourited
"Doctor Zhivago, Brief Encounter, and The Bridge over the River Kwai. A LEAN NIGHT." - Unforgivable #2
ua-cam.com/video/Mz1nQEQ6UAQ/v-deo.html
Matt Johnson accurately roasting the roasts against him is everything I had hoped it would be ❤
"I don't think you lost it after Jurassic Park".
Love this dude.
“Right now it’s at 3.7 but this is going to plummet.”
For reference, a month after release to general audiences, the movie has an average rating of 3.9
I appreciate the top 4s that seem like random movies because you know those are ACTUALLY that person's favourote movies and they're not trying to show off.
8:04 is that a reference to Unforgivable lmao
A Lean night
This guy rules lmao
Never have i seen a guy so enthusiastic about L opinions, fair play.
I’m so happy he’s getting some mainstream recognition especially here in the states. He and Jay created my favorite sitcom of all time and Matt has now made 3 of my favorite movies.
Go SEE BLACKBERRY
8:05 A LEAN NIGHT… unforgivable…
the three films Matt chose to list at the end were unforgivable
he wanted a LEAN night
I’m so glad someone else caught that
Only working director who roasts so freely, love it
lol his top 3 films at the end. a direct reference to one of the greatest UA-cam vids of all time
Ok this was pretty great. Dude is hilarious. Kinda want to watch the movie now because of this. Also yes, give letterboxd a dating option.
Movie is great!
6:58 "Right now it's at 3.7, but this is gonna plummet."
Update March 2024: 3.8
Matt made another great.
"It's at 3.7 right now but this is gonna plummet"
It's 3.8 now lol.
Matt Johnson (May 2023): BlackBerry is at a 3.7 as soon as it releases in full the numbers are gonna plumet.
April 2024: Currently stands at 3.8 on Letterboxd.
"Dr. Zhivago, Brief Encounter, and The Bridge on the River Kwai...a lean night!"
Gotta give it to this guy he’s the first person in Hollywood to make some thing I liked watching in like 10 years. And you guys didn’t try to do anything to kids who are under age Good job on you for that👍🏿
Cannot believe the Unforgivable reference, amazing
I want Matt to roast my top 4 so badly now!
Me too!! He would hate it hahahahahah
drop your handle, we might ask him if he agrees to do it again
@@LetterboxdHQ @svenunovo
@@LetterboxdHQCan I jump on this too? My handle is Doctrin
@@LetterboxdHQ @jkBlueRose
Love the energy and Matt's movies but Under the Silver Lake is underrated as hell. Yet to watch Beau though I'm cautiously optimistic about it
Do not be. Terrible and overindulgent
its amazing
The first 30 minutes would’ve been a great short film. 70% of the movie feels completely superfluous.
I need him so bad it’s getting me
Great UNFORGIVABLE reference at the end there.
I love Beau is Afraid and Under the Silver Lake almost equally with The Dirties. Still gotta watch Blackberry
Finally he can call himself the director of BlackBerry
Letterboxd UA-cam is being handled amazingly. Bells on
This is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. I need every director to do this
Doctor Zhivago, A Brief Encounter and Bridge on the River Kwai? A LEAN NIGHT.
"This is a failed diss" lmao I love him so much
Love this guy’s vibe.
Hey Johnson, sweatpants are out.
I wish Matt Johnson had Letterboxd
C'mon folks, Matt Johnson wants to get pithed on.
obligatory 'where is Nirvanna the band the show season 3' comment, also so happy for Matt and his ongoing success ❤
In the first sentence, he shows how Canadian he is 'eh'. Also asmr.
BlackBerry was a good flick, enjoyed it
I need ntbts season 3 I need it
Was the top 3 a reference to the early youtube masterpiece "Unforgivable"? Cause if so that's legendary
Just naming David Lean films is hilarious
8:04 YOOOOO… he quoted the guy from Unforgivable at the end. A LEAN NIGHT! I am howling 😂😂
I love Matt Johnson but the John Wick 2 diss was unwarranted
I feel like Matt would have appreciate that one if it were “more like wackberry”
The most important moment is the clear distinction he makes between magic mike and magic mike xxl
This is so funny but this perfectly demonstrates why i dont have a letterboxd
he needs to rerelease the dirties
I love Matt Johnson
Hi Matt I have zero issues with the movie...I loved it!!! I'll be watching it again!!
A LEAN NIGHT
Even Spielberg caught a stray lmao 😭
A Lean night.
A Lean night
i love this man
a LEAN night...
His top four is missing The Legend of Bagger Vance.
love matt johnson
OK "more like MidBerry" is a roast of all time
Blackberry is a good film, especially all the parts where the Leafs are blowing it
This movie was great. Made me want to read LOSING THE SIGNAL
He’s so honest which is hilarious him begging for half stars 😂
"these numbers are really padded, like right now its at a 3.7, but this is going to PLUMMET". Currently at a 3.8 👏
Ninja Gaiden 1. Ninja Gaiden 2. Ninja Gaiden 3. CRUISIN USA
LetterBoxd should deffffffff be a dating website
Second review spells DENNIS if you combine the letters of each new line
first time hearing of this guy but I already love him lol this made me look into his stuff. Dude has a great personality.
Also he looks exactly like Chris D'elia, which may not be a good thing depending how you look at it... but there is that..
He looks nothing like D'elia the fuck are you talking about
Sorry Matt you made a very good film. It's your fault people don't have much bad to say about it.
damn matt’s gonna have a lean night
Storytellers are great at telling better stories.
Watched this movie last night, Matt was so funny in it. Great movie
My god i love this. If I had more reviews of my films, I'd do this. lol
It’s gunna be a Lean night!
no 4th fav film is a baller move
A LEAN NIGHT!
5:03 same girl but its 5/5 for me
