To clarify some confusion regarding Captain Tim Purbrick's unit. Before the First Gulf War, he was with A Squadron, the 17th/21st Lancers. In late 1990, he was selected for a temporary posting to the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars for Operation Granby (the First Gulf War). In his words: "I had been selected by the CO to lead a composite Troop of 17th/21st Lancers to be attached, with three other 17th/21st Lancers Troops, to the Queens Royal Irish Hussars...We had hoped to be kept together as a Squadron...But, the decision was taken to split us amongst the four Irish Hussar Squadrons." As a result of this transfer, Captain Purbrick became the commander of 4 Troop, D Squadron, the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars. Hence why in the Desert DPM photo - taken during Granby - he wears the Lancers Beret and Cap Badge, but was with the Hussars. With regards to the two photos of an Officer in MTP Camouflage (at 2:24 and 3:54) - the Officer is Captain Tim Purbrick during his deployments to Afghanistan in the late 2000s.

A "HESH" was probably loaded because they were previously engaging soft skin vehicles, bunkers or infantry in the open, you should always try and have a "Fin" loaded when going up against armour. Trust me a "HESH" round can do a few bit of damage to an armoured vehicle if it hits it but the fastest way to remove a "HESH" from the breach and reload with a "Fin" is to fire it...
What woods457 said. The ONLY way to remove a loaded HESH round in a battlefield situation is to fire it (unless of course you're feeling brave and fancy getting out)

Spoke to an officer, who was a tankie in Desert Storm, at Larkhill once, his unit engaged a T-55 which was dug in, couple of km away, they knocked it out, and afterwards inspected the vehicle, their SABOT had entered the sand, glacis, travelled through crew compartment, through engine/ deck and exited out rear of vehicle and through rear of the dug in position, such was the power of the Chally 1 and its 120mm.
The Q.R.I.H was my husband's regiment. A great regiment that looked after its own and still does. He had finished by this time but had been a tank crew commander and was very happy when they came home relatively unscathed. He knew most of those guys who were his mates. The 17/21 Lancers were posted not far from us, in Munster, back then.
I talked to tankers that came back, the M1's engaged multiple targets in excess of 4Km. The commander of the Iraqi armor unit had know idea he was under direct fire until the turret of the tank near him flew up in the air.
The U.S. tested a new prototype round (semi active laser MRM-CE) using indirect fire and hit a moving T-72 target tank from almost 8.7 km away. That's a touch farther than the max range of a hellfire missile.
Us Brits love or Tea....T55,62,72 they all brew well!!! An extremely one sided conflict, there was only ever going be one outcome. At the time Abrams & Challengers were top dogs the older T series tanks of the enemy couldn't match, not to mention the skill and competence of their crews( the term cannon fodder comes to mind) Those that new this walked away in peace and those disillusioned just waited for the beasts to feast. Top gunnery old boy!
Luck also plays a part in the longest shots be they tank on tank, or sniper, archer, sling shot, spear etc.... Of course skill, experience, and superior weaponry all play their part. If luck or "fortune" didn't play a part then shots of this range would be made consistently day in, day out, in any environment. They would be commonplace, but they aren't. Not taking anything away from the tank crew or tank.....just say'in there is a grain of luck in things like this as well.
This is another reason why I think the 2 variants of the Challenger tank are the best tanks ever designed..... in particular the Chally 2. Yeah, it's true that they're not perfect but as an all round design the 2 is as close as you can get to it. As it stands, she definitely needs some new toys but I think that either the RBLS or Street fighter version will bring her up to where she needs to be. 🇬🇧🇬🇧✌✌
I knew Mr Purbrick slightly, although he was in D squadron. At that time I was a REME mechanic attached to C squadron of the QRIH. Those lads were salt of the Earth. Cracking bunch of blokes.
I rather think the lesson is that if you’re in an AFV you need to keep moving. Sitting in defilade in the desert isn’t the brightest idea when opposing a modern MBT. Challenger is a good example of an adversary not to be taken for granted. The T-55 is decades beyond it’s reasonable life expectancy.
Real lesson is don't use a T55 from the 1950s against 30 year more modern designs. British tanks are not that good anymore. The Challenger 2 is rather weak in most areas compared with other NATO tanks.
Seeing lots of comments trying to take away what a good shot it was. Even ig it was close the enemy tank wouldn't even dent the challenger armour. These tanks where left next to an atom bomb in Australia and drove away undamaged. What a true bit of Brit engineering
@@johncostello3174 M60 use the homogeneous steel armor, the XM1 and first batch of M1 use Chobham armor, from M1A1 onward use DU/composite armor. leaving the brits to be the only one using it.

Some good ol British humour for you right there haha
It always warms the cockles to hear our squaddies (both English and American) talking of how fondly they remember their counterparts. Respect to you all chaps 🙌🏻
I remember my deployment to Iraq in 2007, for the brigades acclimatisation we were stationed in Kuwait for 4 weeks and I was running the MOUT package, we were accommodated in Camp Virginia but had to travel daily to Camp Buehring to run the MOUT, every time we arrived at the checkpoint we had to dismount for the security detail to check our vehicles, this one day a security detail I think USAF not sure was looking at the flag patch on our arms and said good moring gentleman hows are the Australian army this morning ((Obviously confusing the Flag of the Union for the Australian Flag,! look them up you can see they are discernably different)) I replied good thank you and how is the Canadian Air Force this morning, he did not like that one bit and said sharply "Hey I am an American" and I said, "Hey yeah I am British". Great times really enjoyed working alongside the US Forces on several occasions, sometimes they just never quite got our sense of humour

A combination of skill, experience & confidence results in a win.
Doug Bourdo and superior weaponry...
