Grim Dawn is an apocalyptic fantasy ARPG that initially released back in 2016.
This game has had 3 major DLC releases since launch with a 4th new expansion recently announced for 2024.
This year I’ve covered quite a few ARPGs, I’ve revisited Last Epoch, Wolcen and Diablo 4 as well as just becoming more of an ARPG fan in general, the last time I covered Grim Dawn was back in 2016 so I decided now would be a good time for a revisit to see how it compares to newer ARPG releases, especially with the new expansion on the horizon.
What do think about Grim Dawn in 2023? Is this ARPG still work playing? what's your best class or build in Grim Dawn? let me know in the comments below!

    ______________
Grim Dawn 2023 Steam ARPG description
Enter an apocalyptic fantasy world where humanity is on the brink of extinction, iron is valued above gold and trust is hard earned. This ARPG features complex character development, hundreds of unique items, crafting and quests with choice & consequence.
    Key Features
Dual Class - Combine any of six distinct classes with over 25 skills and modifiers per class. Base classes include Soldier, Demolitionist, Occultist, Nightblade, Arcanist and Shaman.
Hundreds of Item Skills - Augment your class build with a diverse array of over 250 unique skills granted by items and equipment add-ons.
Collect hundreds of Items - Common, magical, rare, epic and legendary classes of loot. Plus over 20,000 possible magical affix combinations and over 200 rare affixes.
Quests with Choice and Consequence - You will face tough decisions that leave significant impacts upon the world. Strangers on the road, desperate families and even entire villages may live or perish based on your actions. Currently over 35 quests with 75+ lore notes to be collected.
Friendly and Enemy Factions - Earn favor with human factions to unlock additional quest lines, vendor discounts and special faction-based items and augments. Some neutral factions can be turned into allies but aiding one will make the enemy of another. Hostile factions will remember your deeds and deepen their hatred of you, sending out large packs and elite heroes to hunt you down.
Devotion, an additional layer of skill customization allows you to acquire bonuses and powerful secondary effects for your class skills. These are unlocked from a giant constellation map with points acquired by finding and restoring destroyed or corrupted shrines hidden throughout the world.
Rebuild the World - Help human enclaves survive and flourish by securing vital necessities, rebuilding structures and rescuing survivors who can then lend their services to your cause.
4 Person Multiplayer - Connect with Friends or make new allies in glorious multiplayer. Multiplayer encounters will put your teamwork to the ultimate challenge.
Fast-paced Visceral Combat - Enemy blood spatters, ragdoll physics and satisfying enemy effects. Smash in doors and fight house to house, leaving a path of demolished furniture in your wake.
Rogue-Like Dungeons - Descend into special locked challenge dungeons that require a rare crafted key, where enemy levels increase as you progress and player teleport is disabled. There is no way out except to complete the dungeon or die trying.
Dynamic Weather - The world is brought to life with region-specific climates and a variety of weather effects. A sunny day can cloud over with mild rain showers that builds into a booming thunderstorm. Variable wind gusts blow grass and affect objects like windmills.
Recipe Based Crafting - Collect over 250 crafting recipes that allow you to combine salvaged components into unique crafted items and then, later, use those basic crafted items with higher-tiered recipes to complete items of amazing power.
Reclaim Skill Points - The ability to pay to reclaim points alleviates the fear and frustration of having to make early, uninformed skill choices that could permanently gimp a character.

Crate are releasing update 1.2 for Grim Dawn soon (expected within a month), which is adding a default universal dodge button, improving loot drop quality and reducing clutter, and taking health and mana pots out of the inventory and making them infinite on a cool-down, among other QoL changes. I hope you come back to show more of the game off to your audience after :)

I have been playing Grim Dawn since some early betas, I have over 1000 hours in it, I have leveled over a dozen different characters to 100 and I still occasionally come back to it with the thought of "well, THIS one new build might be interesting...". And I have beaten every single boss and difficult encounter, except one super secret joke boss, without ever looking at any build guides. To be fair, I don't think that boss is really beatable with most classes in the game anyways - requires a very specific type of abuse to beat.
In just a couple days when Crate releases the 1.2 patch, I will take one of my old not-so-well-performing characters to make a new build for it. I already have a lot of ideas.
Grim Dawn is one of those games where you can definitely succeed without looking up the meta builds, with your own build ideas, without being a cakewalk. You definitely need to think and calculate your builds for them to succeed, and you will run into dead ends occasionally, but you will almost always be able to fix them.
A wonderful game. Keep playing it! I can't wait for you to find out all the cool stuff still in storage. And yes, the game definitely doesn't end at 100! You still have a lot of fun min-maxing and building left after hitting 100. And then rolling new characters, trading gear between them, trying out new builds and so on. Grim Dawn even has extra XP items & potions to make leveling go that much faster, just so you can try out fun new things.

so, I bought the game yesterday, being as easily influenced as I am, and currently between content in my mina game, FF14. I'm also going the easy 1 button notion you present here, :p , being also a big fan of simpler! it's rocking. Built my first relic , too, with the currency Warden dropped. One tip I received after posing the question to the steam GD community: as I bought the full package and expacs, once I kill the Warden, I was offered to go to the FG expacs. I took the quest, popped in, but went back to finish the OG expac content. in fact, the community suggested complete OG>then ashes> then FG. So, I'll go that route. They also suggested looking up build guides etc, which for now, I have no intention, as long as my uber 1 button build holds. I killed Warden simply enough, only 1 death in 10 hours of play, and not on the warden. Thanks again, LP! Oh, and I Love the music in this game. freakin sweet!

Grim Internals will help you control some of the UI aspects of the game and you can also adjust the overall game clock speed to make the game a little faster if the default pace is a little too slow. It's a really good game indeed and the developers are amazing.
For years they wanted to do something else because some of them had been doing nothing but ARPGs for 20 years, since Titan Quest, and the engine is now old and hard to maintain / improve.
And they did with "Farthest Frontier", but they never stopped caring about the game and their fans and pumped out patches with such an amount of changes, additions and bugfixes that they put almost every other studio to shame.

GD is one of the best ARPGs ever created if you can get past the visual aspect, which in 2023 is outdated. It has a lot of stuff in it though, and the new expansion that's been recently announced will literally add whole new systems to the game. It has that classic ARPG feel to it.
The best thing is that GD 2 is planned already so there will be a continuation of this masterpiece. Probably a competitor to D5 rather than D4 though.

The mix and match class system, devotion tree and runes/sigils allow for endless customization. Once you're hooked and start getting loot for other build types you immediately start new characters to try them out. Dual wield frost reaper, super tank self healing totem warden, 2h gun toting elementalist throwing grenades and using magic shield spells, etc.

You are mostly right about what you said but there is a small caveat. You were playing on normal where essencially anything works, pick a skill you like, invbest all towards making it better and you can just push through no problem. Elite that's harder to make it work but you can still brute force it albeit with much more difficulty. Ultimate however you will need a fairly well tunned machine of a build or you will keep banging your head against a wall and the wall won't give in first.
On another note, 1.2 comes out tomorrow and it comes with a lot of QoL improvements. Less loot drops but much better drops to address the issue of lots of junk droping while overall giving more good stuff. You can acutally level up to 100 in normal difficulty too instead of having to go through all difficulties which can help you level up a build and there are many other good stuff.
On a side note, yeah, necromancers are fun. You know what's better than to kill thousands of enemies? Having minions do it for you. You are above needing to dirty your hands xD.

And if you ever get bored with the classes there are mods that change/rebalance/add them, for example the absolute monstrocity of a mod - Dawn of Masteries, which adds 53(?) more classes (basically merges the most popular class mods into 1 huge one) which, of course, can be multiclassed.
Oh, and Rainbow Filter mod is such a huge QoL mod. It highlights stats on items in different colors so it's way easier to quickly check if it's any good. Huge recommend.

    @travissullivan6575 9 місяців тому

I would say, for the most part, everything is easy to understand except 3 things (4 if you count armor and that each body part is attacked randomly).
1 is damage conversion. You can only convert damage once, and if it is over 100%, it is scaled down to 100%. Transmuters (skill points that alter a skill) and MIs (special items) that convert damage happen first. If you have 2, they happen at the same time and go over 100%. Global conversion comes next.
    2. Resistance Reduction. -XX% Resistance Reduction stacks. This is also the first one that is applied. If you have a very high -XX% RR, the other types aren't as valuable, such as when both classes you are playing have this. Every 1% of this is a major damage boost, as this can actually take Resistances into the negative. Next is flat RR, like "Reduces targets Resistances by XXX" which applies after all the -XX% RR has been applied. This can not take a target below 0. This stat is important for a lot of bosses, because most have around 90 resistance to certain damage types, and with this plus your -XX% RR, you get them to 0 resistance. The third time is XX% Reduced target's resistance. This takes the remaining amount of the target's resistance (as it is the third to apply) and reduces it by a %. If they still have 100 resistance and you have 30% reduced RR, they now have 70, but if they have 10 after all your resistance shred, they have 7, so its value is not high is a double RR build, but it is invaluable in a single RR build.
    3. Default weapon replacers (DARs) and Weapon Pool Skills (WPSs). DARs basically are modified default attacks. WPSs proc off of default attacks and DARs. The Damage a WPS does is added to your default attack or your DAR, so having a DAR means your WPS do more damage. WPSs can only get to 100%, and if your total is above 100%, then it is scaled down. DW has a natural WPS (attack with MH, OH and both weapons), but this is scale crushed up to 100%, but from everything I've tested, it can never be 0%, so when DW, you want to aim for 97%, not 100%. If you have a transmuter or MI that changes the damage type of your DAR, every WPS that procs from that DAR will have the same conversion applied to it.
There are a few other confusing things, but nothing that really hampers enjoyment (even those don't really matter that much)

I've been playing this game since early access and its just alot of fun, both in how many options u have on how to build your character as well.
Its also one of the few offline ARPG's out there, so if u have bad internet just play this game(or Torchlight).
I love how u can use 2 classes, and how it changes the dialogue and choices u can do becouse some factions don't like who u are becouse of your class.

at some point you will need a proper build :) and gear set with maxed resistances and life leech. i remember playing like this and i hit the brick wall at Elite difficulty.
Fun facts: i played with my friend as Blademaster and he played i think Sorcerer. I was unable to drop/complete my armor set for Blademaster, because i had caster drops like all the time. From 100 items dropped i was able to use maybe one or two items. My friend had exactly the same with melee drops. So we were aware of items we need and eventually we were able to complete out sets. I remember i was missing one crucial item for my build for hundreds of hours and at one point i got message from my friend with screenshot "i got this, it is it ?" i was screaming of joy ...
Or at some points rocking at Ultimate difficulty i got this INSANE 2 hander sword for Reaper/Death Knight. The item you make a build around it. The item dropped and i was like "what the f ..." and i knew i need to create another character because at that time you were unable to change classes once you picked two (only with mods/trainers and i did not want to do that). The sword requirement was level 100, so huraaaaay lets start leveling again ...

There is a ton of epic and legendary gear that have interesting abilities and look amazing in transmog. Large shared stash means having alt characters is fun and rewarding. The biggest thing I did not see here is defense/resistances. These become a major part of your gear setups and low resistances/armor can lead to very quick deaths, as evidenced numerous times in this video. Bosses faceroll you when they can exploit weaknesses in your setup.

Saw it was on sale on Steam and can’t believe I’ve just now found and learned about this game, as someone who loved Diablo II Grim Dawn is a gem.

One of my favorite games of all time. I come back and play again every year or two.
It's kind of nice having a not online arpg to play sometimes . The game is so satisfying to try new builds in every time .
Crate just keeps updating it over time and adding even more, even when you think they are done.
Couldn't believe they announced another expansion.

Some pieces of advice: Spend attribute points of health increase and build full resistances asap. Glass cannon is not the way. Every death is punished by xp loss. Look out for defensive skills and devotions esp. health regen. Beware of the floor, you can be killed just by standing in some acidic stuff while browsing your inventory.

for whatever reason I feel like this game doesn't stream well but I would 10000000000000% recommend anyone that likes this genre to purchase this game. The first 20 levels are kinda rough but it goes quick. Look up a simple guide to understand what you should do to get your skill and devotion points. You dual class which is super cool and you can pretty much build and play whatever you want. If you want to be a be a ranged/melee/summoner/reflector of damage, whatever you want to do it's there. There are basic rules you want to follow to have a successful build. Grim Tools is a really good tool, rainbow filter. If anyone is a Last Epoch player, Grim Tools is the same platform.

I'm an older gamer and I remember the days when you got a complete game for the box price. ARPG's also happen to be my jam, all the way back to the days of d1 and d2. Grim Dawn is the best ARPG I have ever played hands down. You haven't even scratched the surface of all the available content. There are a multitude of super bosses and hidden quests once you reach the endgame and some of your justified complaints were just addressed in patch 1.2 a few days ago. I can not recommend this game enough to anyone out there. As an important aside there is a community run seasonal mod if you ever feel like taking on the game from a fresh start.
