Having played nearly every major ARPG since Diablo 2, I find Grim Dawn to be the most well designed and overall satisfying experience in the genre. The number of QoL advancements this game made, has caused me to pretty much stop playing all similar games that came before it. From the first time I played it in early access more than 5 years back, I knew this game would eat up a major portion of my life. And it did.
i played Grim Dawn in 2020 for the first time and it is one of the most beautifully made games i've played, ever. IMO it will be worth playing for a long long time.
Mom joke plus a reallly well crafted script that covers briefly a lot of aspects of the game, great job man! Here a 3000+ hours GD player, this game fucking rocks!
11:11 Hey, I actually think the story and world-building is one of the strong points of Grim Dawn. Without it I definitely would not have been sucked into the game. The handcrafted environments also match with the lore very well and give as sense of exploration and wonder. Let's not send the message to game developers that players don't care about these elements.
As someone who just started playing this in 2022, and currently feeling “stuck” as a level 28, this video was very helpful in continuing to stick it out. Great video.
@@ZombiemanTemple You must be doing something wrong. Started my first playthrough on normal difficulty a couple of weeks back and I found myself absolutely destroying with my ranged elemental build. About to start the final DLC at level 65 and I've only died like 5 times. Spend some time grinding Crucible to level up a bit more.
January 2024 and there’s a couple of solid guides on UA-cam I highly recommend the game has a pretty steep learning curve but no where near as bad as poe imo
What stands out about _Grim Dawn_ to me is that it is made by devs for devs. i.e. They built a game they wanted to play with constant balancing and tweaking. The graphics and music are excellent. They also embraced the community and natively incorporated a loot filter. Everything about Crate reminds me of Blizzard pre-WoW days. This mini-documentary is excellent -- filling in some of the developmental timeline.
Great video. I'd also like to mention the great item filter built into the game. It's a little thing, but it makes game play much better. It's the most comprehensive filter I know of.
I’ve noticed that Grim Dawn has had a pretty big comeback lately. I’m super glad about that, it’s my favorite RPG ever, and I’ve gotten 2 of my friends to play w me
Grim Dawn was the first ARPG to pull me in. Love this game, its excellent in atmosphere and design. I later got Titan Quest, and could see the lineage, Grim Dawn is an improved version, at least to me.
my first ARPG was Dungeon Siege, and i have yet to find a game that feels as special as Dungeon Siege nor a game that captures the Ooomph that Lightning/Thunder spells brings.
To me Grim Dawn is a great middle ground between POE and D3, you don't need to read a 500 pages essay before playing the game, it has the right amount of complexity to be interesting and not overwhelming.
My most played game on Steam and a game which I quite quickly fell in love with and spent a very good deal of time playing in 2019 and I still play it. There are a lot of others out there with more time than me, of course and it's all possible because this game just brings quite a few things to the table that other games did not. I of course played Diablo, Torchlight, Dungeon Siege, Path of Exile... this seems to be my absolute favorite, though and I have not really gotten tired of playing it. It has been with me through some tough times and that's even more reason to love it. The atmosphere it has is something I love, the way things like the lore are plotted out, not only in notes, but in short descriptions in items, in the Devotion tree, in interactions with characters and on the skills you use themselves is something you do not see often. Something you do not see at all in most cases. "The armor of famed tactician, General Markovian, who valiantly joined his men on the frontlines in every battle." as a description for an in-game item set. Pure awesome. Too bad General Markovian is not in the game, haha, but totally down to collect that set and use it on a character just by reading that description. Getting to know more about this guy really fleshes out on what a badass he must have been and the game does this in a fantastic way which I will not spoil further. If you are not playing this game, you are missing out. I found the action great, the animations too, I do not really mind small things like that and I loved the story. There is more than one bad guy so that's explained a bit too loosely here. There is a good deal of gray area fuckery going around and that really adds to the feel. Disclaimer, I was not a big fan of these types of RPGs, I was never turbo into Diablo or the others, but I am really stuck on Grim Dawn. It grabbed me, plain and simple and it can grab a lot of people. I STRONGLY recommend you try to get caught and bring friends. This game synergizes with friends in ways other games do not because of the way classes and skills are built in this game. You open 10 cans of whoop-ass a minute with the right combo... I love the co-op, but not all people do. I think it does shine on its own. It sure helps gain a quicker understanding of the game if you play with close friends.
Tried diablo 3, Poe, and Grim dawn recently. Grim dawn is the one I decided as the most worthy of consuming my life (still wanna try last epoch though).
If you didn't like D3, you might not like Last Epoch. LE is very much an updated, evolved D3 with the same type of map design (pretty linear) and the same emphasis on class identity over build diversity. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely some build variety in LE, but nothing like GD. LE is certainly a good game, I've got 80 hours in it so far, but it's very different than GD (1,000 hours so far). GD places much more emphasis on exploration and feels more open world.
@@painfullyaware5221 I'm okay with it sharing some similarities with D3, but I can definitely see how there's more depth in GD (albeit one's a finished game the other is still in EA). What appeals to me most of LE I guess is is the classes and the whole time travel mechanic looks interesting, and I've heard some say it feels like a decent mix of both diablo with poe. I'm going to hold off on trying it anyway until it's out of EA and even if I don't like it as much as GD it's nice to have variety. Thanks for letting me know what you think though! It's always nice to hear another players experience and now I have a much better idea of what to expect from LE.
@@charliem5604 I have many many hours in D3, PoE, GD and LE. I'll put it this way: D3 is easy mode, builds are not fancy, straight forward, easy to master. POE is a second job. Nice game but it's made for the hard-core audience. LE it's a mix between D3 and POE. There are plenty of builds to make and the gameplay is fluid, nice combos, easy campaign but end game can get difficult. Also Last Epoch has the best crafting system hands down. No one does is better. Grim Dawn it's an epic game with no multiplayer. Getting LastEpoch is worth it imo if you want to try it.

In the meantime, the premise of Black Legion sounds very interesting, and I'd be down for this game seeing the light of development.
God the main quest of the base game was surprisingly huge. I still get overwhelmed when I drag the map up the left side of the screen and it just keeps going
13:00 I wanted to address this part about wide open maps a bit. In general, this is correct, but I have one major pet peeve with what is otherwise one of my favorite games. In various zones, you'll find your progress stymied by indestructible obstructions within the level architecture/geometry that force you to take different paths through a zone. It's usually not that much of an issue, but there's a few places where it's so bad that you have what looks essentially like a wide open zone with only one really long and winding way through it because almost every other potential passage is blocked. The worst contenders of this style of level design are the city of Malmouth and Port Valbury. I mean, I get it from a plot angle, those are cities that were swallowed by what is essentially a horde of aetherial zombies so there's barricades everywhere. Doesn't make it any less of a hassle to navigate through those zones, though.
Grim dawn was very good it was the only game i played for so long even a couple of my friends were like dude whats that game your always playing and then i convinced them to play as well and then they were hooked to lol.
On the regular, my friends want to play through some new diablo clone. I play for a week with them, then come back and make a new character and run thru Grim Dawn. It's like coming home, or like a palate cleanser.
1k hours of grimm dawn and its still my favorite ARPG. I love that they made it Possible to play with a Controller witch i can highly recommend for all new and old gd fans
I agree with your view on the game absolutely. It has all that a good arpg should have and even more. The murky setting along with music creates great atmosphere. What i really appreciate is the great amount of lore which can be found in the game, thanks to that the world feels more consistent and living what adds a big boost to immersion. For me personally the best arpg i've played since Diablo 2.
I just started playing this and I love it, when you kill a whole bunch of fodder with lightning for example they have a very satisfactory *splat* sound and fly all over the place. It gives you the feeling you’re really powerful,.. even at level 10 lol
This video is fabulous! You managed to gather all game features, compare with other games, show the difference in gameplay and provide some valuable tips. Excellent!
Grim Dawn is hands down one of my favourite ARPG's and I've played it on and off since it was released. Anyone playing it today for the first time will fall in love with it in no time (though they will find the learning curve to be a challenge). I have over 2000hrs invested so far
Such a great video about an amazing game. Didn't expect this level of quality when starting the video; I hope more people will appreciate the game thanks to it.
Grim dawn is starting to feel like a rare type of game. It’s got this wholesome vibe with the devs only trying to sell you expansion packs. The whole game is there for you to explore and absorb at your own rate. The coolest shit is not in a cash shop, but out in the world or from within a well done crafting system! It boggles the mind that there is no battle pass to buy! Other devs should take note of how this goes, I’ve nearly checked out of the games as a service predation we have going on that permeates nearly everything outside of indies, and I’m likely to fanboy these devs and buy without hesitation whatever comes next.
To whoever doesn't play this game yet, it worth your time. There is even a mod that increase the basic 9 classes to 55 classes (mostly from other game such as D2, D3, titan quest) and very interesting to combine 2 of them nonetheless.
This game certainly has a special place in my heart, it is one of the most remarkable games in my life... i stopped playing it recently but i got 8500 hours on steam! For so cheap it's incredible how much content you can get.
Grim Dawn is without a doubt the best arpg ever made IMO. I legit haven't been able to enjoy another one since. Every arpg I play just makes me think "I'd rather replay Grim Dawn" I need to get a Steam Deck so I can play it on the go.
I pirated Grim Dawn last week and I only hit level 8 before I snatched the Definitive edition off GOG. I can’t believe how good Grim Dawn is! I’m level 16 today and starting to feel and look like a badass. The pacing is done so well, and the loot system, while not exactly original, is just addictive! I’m even enjoying it with an Xbone controller because you can map almost anything to most buttons. I’m very grateful for Grim Dawn! I needed something to distract me from my anxiety and dealing with 2 deaths in 6 months. Stay safe and Happy 4th of July everyone! 🤘🏻❤️
I'm playing Grim Dawn on a Ryzen 7 and 16gb ram but i was worried the Radeon vega 7 integrated graphics (512mb dedicated memory but shares system memory also) wouldn't quite like it but i was pleasantly surprised. I do have all the settings on low or off even though i could probably bump them up a bit, but i think it looks great, and when zooming in to look at the character the details of armor ect all look good and detailed. - Fantastic game.
It is a bit of slowing down after 1000 hours in Path of Exile but I now appreciate the relaxing but deep systems in Grim Dawn. Thank you for the video.
the only bad thing comapre to titan quest is this game didn't let you build a hybird , you have to choose between summon build or melee or magic , not mix everything up
The thing that killed it for me was when i realised devotion points are limited below the amount of shrines so i left at level 60 or 70 something... Such a shame, i had a dream build mapped out, getting that far then realizing its not possible was such a downer.
One of the reasons Ive been on and off this game, even though the gameplay is AMAZING, was because of the graphics. But please don't be turned off by the graphics BECAUSE with a few mod like 4k textures, AND Reshades, you can get really pretty decent graphics, especially during nighttime. And now, I cannot stop playing this game. Of course it all depends on if your hardware can handle it. I have a 3090ti with 3440x1440p monitor and my fps goes from around 220-240fps to 95-120fps with graphics at max and Reshades. Also there is a software to help with CPU multi-threading! Cheers :)
Regarding story in ARPGs, I think D2 is an amazing example. Solid story, occasionally interesting side quests, and amazing dialogue with most NPCs. It contributes to that game's legendary status. I'd also put GD's lore notes on a list of best-in-class story features. They're amazing!
Steve Prado is amazing and Grim Dawn has one of the best soundtracks in a game. Ever. Its right up there with Diablo imo and I don't say that lightly being an old school Diablo fan.
Absolutely agree. Grim Dawn is imo the best ARPG so far. And i have played them all for several hundred of hours. The pacing, the mechanics, the possibility of character buidling. Outstanding. I highly recommend the Mod Nydiamar Ultimate Version (with Diablo 3 classes available), if you have GD Vanilla played out a lot.
Grim Dawn's music is amazing and fitting (a.k.a grim), but I still like to blast rock/pop just imagining my character fighting in post apocalyptic world whilst headbanging.
Grim Dawn is absolutely fabulous. My favourite ARPG.

God the main quest of the base game was surprisingly huge. I still get overwhelmed when I drag the map up the left side of the screen and it just keeps going
near 30 minutes, time to refill my drink. thanks for another banger man :)
I'd always play grimdawn regardless of being killed at level 80's.. Yes I played hardcore mode.
Grim dawn was very good it was the only game i played for so long even a couple of my friends were like dude whats that game your always playing and then i convinced them to play as well and then they were hooked to lol.
I love how astoundingly similar our taste in games really is. It's as if we were childhood neighbours :D nice video
I haven't played Grim Dawn, but thanks for the wonderful video as always. This is one of my favorite channels on UA-cam. 👍
7 years later, still worth playing.
On the regular, my friends want to play through some new diablo clone. I play for a week with them, then come back and make a new character and run thru Grim Dawn. It's like coming home, or like a palate cleanser.
Great video, great behind the scenes info. Over all well made. I picked it up myself as most videos I've watched about Grim Dawn are very positive.
19:00 I think it's 36 combinations, it doesn't matter the order you pick the masteries in haha!
1k hours of grimm dawn and its still my favorite ARPG. I love that they made it Possible to play with a Controller witch i can highly recommend for all new and old gd fans
My kids got me Grim Dawn for Xmas this year - My fav ARPG!
I still play both Titan Quest and Grim Dawn. Their are some down right awesome mods for Titan Quest so it still has a lot of playability.
Best ARPG. I still play it today.
A game about The Black Legion would be nice👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I love Grimdawn also. So addictive and you're true, the music is great
Grim dawn is a great game, loved it in all its glory.
I'ts my favourite arpg, i always come back to it.
Grim Dawn is one of my favorite games.
Found you about a month back been watching old content, not found a video I’ve disliked amazing content man.
No internet required? Lan coop? Better than D3? No micro bills? 10/10
Fantastic video as always C4G, already bought the game. Its amazing lol
I just started playing this and I love it, when you kill a whole bunch of fodder with lightning for example they have a very satisfactory *splat* sound and fly all over the place. It gives you the feeling you’re really powerful,.. even at level 10 lol
I have just bought this, and sunk about 50 hours into it... It is superb.
Here we are in 2023 with a huge update (1.2) and the announcement of a new expansion! Grim Dawn smells diablo blood in the water :D
Grim Dawn is my favorite ARPG.
Definitely my favorite ARPG. If any of you still haven’t played this game, please give it a shot.
This video is fabulous! You managed to gather all game features, compare with other games, show the difference in gameplay and provide some valuable tips. Excellent!
One of my fav ARPG's, great video man!
Grim Dawn is my first ARPG and what a way to kick things off
The game looks so much better and more immersive if you turn off the damage numbers and health bars over the monsters.
I have to try this now :D
Grim Dawn is hands down one of my favourite ARPG's and I've played it on and off since it was released. Anyone playing it today for the first time will fall in love with it in no time (though they will find the learning curve to be a challenge). I have over 2000hrs invested so far
Glad your interviewed devs.
Please put this info in the title or thumbnail and description box.
Such a great video about an amazing game. Didn't expect this level of quality when starting the video; I hope more people will appreciate the game thanks to it.
2024, still is worth it! absolutele gem
Made me happy that you mention Divine Divinity. Will you make a review of this game? :O -love tom
There's a map for the game called Reign of Terror, it recreate the diablo 2 in grim dawn wiith all classes, quests, gear and so on
Grim Dawn is without a doubt the best arpg ever made IMO.
I legit haven't been able to enjoy another one since. Every arpg I play just makes me think "I'd rather replay Grim Dawn"
I need to get a Steam Deck so I can play it on the go.
Just a heads up, it's not 72 combinations, it's 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9 = 36 total classes. So 9 base, uncombined classes, and 27 class combinations.
Retrospective? I still play this :D
(I know that's not what it means)
It's cool that now it's also available for consoles.
I still randomly hum songs from this game. Easily my favorite.
Still play it to the day. D2, titan quest, and grim dawn all day baby.
The GOAT of AARPGs.
Currently playing Grim Dawn shield breaker first time play through in 2021 because of this video! Ty ty
9010 hours and still counting. Love this game
It is a bit of slowing down after 1000 hours in Path of Exile but I now appreciate the relaxing but deep systems in Grim Dawn.
Thank you for the video.
The Series X version with FPS unlocked is so much fun
the only bad thing comapre to titan quest is this game didn't let you build a hybird , you have to choose between summon build or melee or magic , not mix everything up
Yes.
The end.
(for real; if you are an ARPG fan and you've NOT played Grim Dawn, you are failing.)
Cheers :)
Excellent video. Fantastic opening!
The music, it creates the mood, very eerie and morbid! I like it. Awesome game!!!
this is one of the best arpg ever. it will always be my number 1 arpg. can't wait to try other arpg in the future.
After 690h in, I can honestly say it is a great diablo like game that every fan should play
I'm that one person playing h'n's games for the story. :D
Good material though!
You can use Core Switcher to help with the stuttering. There's also a ReShader auto-setup that improves the look of the game
Grim Dawn's music is amazing and fitting (a.k.a grim), but I still like to blast rock/pop just imagining my character fighting in post apocalyptic world whilst headbanging.
