Virgin Killer is a great record with horrific original cover art that the band contends was done by the recrd company without their knowledge. The 'wtf' look on Uli Jon Roth's face on the replacement cover is priceless, giving at least some credence to the story. Uli was the progenitor , along with Blackmore to the neo-classical shred style. Uli worshipped Hendrix and could shred like Paganini. Plus he had riffs that were madness and genius...madnius, if you will. Underrated to a criminal degree, Uli stands somewhat in the shadow of Michael Schenker for many ; but those who know Uli's work see he is every bit the towering six string god that Schenker is, and should receive his proper due. His work on 'Sails Of Charon" should silence any debate.

    1. Judas Priest- Sad Wings of Destiny
    2. Rainbow- Rising
    3. Thin Lizzy- Johnny the Fox (heavier than Jailbreak, IMO)
    4. Rush- 2112
    5. Y&T- Yesterday and Today
    Honorable Mentions:
AC/DC- High Voltage (not top-5 only because of my insistence that they're NOT METAL- just good times rock n roll)
Led Zeppelin- Presence (Achilles' Last Stand is Iron Maiden a half-decade before Iron Maiden had that sound)
    Kiss- Destroyer
UFO- No Heavy Petting (the lesser of the original Schenker years IMO, hence not top-5)

ouch... Star Wars was 77 but the vibes are still good. One thing I've learned being a child of the 70's is that experiencing all this stuff as it happened, when it was innovated and revolutionary, is always going to make it better for those living through than discovering it generations later. It set the stage and paved the way for almost everything that is mass consumed today. Lots of songs that would be looked over or considered throw aways still have feels and memories because they were experienced for the first time during times when life was great. Later generations are completely desensitized to most of it. I love all the KISS stuff from that era where perhaps millennial's would rip most of it apart and the metoo movement would over "animalize" it all.

1976 was for me the best year in the history of hard rock and heavy metal.
Great list of top5 and honorable mentions.
    So many more:
Boston, UFO, Angel, Moxy, Bugie, Pat Travers, Kiss (rock n roll over), Yesterday & Today, Starz, Kansas, Uriah Heep, Sweet

A top 5 for 1976's metal albums is pretty damn hard to do. I cannot complain about the top 5 here, they are great. Still, No Heavy Petting by UFO and Virgin Killer by Scorpions are equally good with the top 5.

    5. Kiss. Ugh. Even when I was a kid I thought these guys were poseurs. 2/5
    4. Thin Lizzy. The best of a pretty rad discog. 5/5
    3. Rush. I really like Rush, but with this one the "concept" (not a concept album ;) ) side is so good that I can't get into the rest of the album. I usually turn it off when 'Bangkok' kicks in. 3.5/5 as an album (5/5 for Side One)
    2. Priest. Yes. Probably the strongest contender for "my favorite band ever" and this is where it starts for me. 5/5
    1. Rainbow. This might be Blackmore's greatest work but RJD's was Heaven and Hell (fight me Sarah). Otherwise I generally agree with the gushing about this album. 5/5

I was 11 in 1976. Sad Wings was unique to me as a kid, the album was seamlessly perfect and a new kind of heavy. I still to this day have to listen to the entire thing from first song to last.

It's weird how 1976 was the year Punk was rapidly rising (first Ramones album) and so was Disco, and older bands continued to put out decent albums, and the first wave of Metal was almost exhausted. But the 80s breakout was being gestated and quietly forming. But as I remember it, so few people were aware of it at the time (i was, though).
