Many, many years ago when my wife and I were first dating I found an orange sulfur self mushroom in the woods, brought it home, and prepared it that night for dinner for her. (She's a vegetarian.) I made a sun dried tomato pesto with sauteed o.s.s.mushroons over linguine. Even though she saw the mushroom before I cut it up and cooked it (We both did a second identification check against our fungi field guides before deciding to eat it) she still thought I snuck chicken into the dish. We've been laughing about "...tastes like chicken for over thirty-two years now. I hope you and your family have many, many fun years of hunting for mushrooms.
This was so cool to watch! My husband and daughter and I found a chicken of the woods on our walk the other day. We thought it was beautiful, but didn’t know it was edible. The next day, when we returned to the spot, the entire mushroom was gone-someone got a good meal!
Speaking of Popeye’s... I would love to see Emmy cook a whole “Southern Dinner”. Soul food’s finest: Fried Chicken (possibly smothered), Collard Greens, Sweet Potatoes.... Ohhh! And CHITTERLINGS!!! 😊

How wonderful that your children are learning about foraging! You and your husband must be such caring teachers for them! It gives me joy to know that such parents really do exist.
I recently joined the large mushroom ID group on Facebook of all places and it has been super interesting to learn and know I could get some good second opinions should I find a mushroom.
It's pretty intimidating at first, but some mushrooms don't have toxic lookalikes so it's not as unsafe as you might expect, especially if you have someone with experience to guide you at first. I'd never try to pick mushrooms that are trickier to identify but some aren't too risky because they're pretty unique looking.
Somebody once told me the rule of thumb is if the mushroom is pretty it could be poisonous if it’s ugly or meh you can eat it. (Don’t actually follow this rule)
I think this specific kind is one of the easier ones to identify. I wouldn’t feel weird about foraging hen of the woods, but def wouldn’t trust myself with any other mushroom

Wow. Nothing like Mount Olive pickles and Dukes Mayo. You make us Southerners proud. Mount Olive pickles come from where else but Mount Olive NC. There are two streets CUCUMBER and the Other VINE. They intersect in Mount Olive pickle factory parking lot.
I have fond memories of foraging for mushrooms and chamomile in Catalunya Spain with my aunt when I was 3 years old. She used to pickle them in vinegar.
There are 2 types of Chicken of the Woods that grow in my area... a yellow based variety that grow on the trunk of an old Oak tree, called Laetiporus Sulphureous and a creamy peachy blushed one (like you had) called Laetiporus Cincinnatus, that tend to grow on the ground near an old Oak tree. I'm not a mushroom aficionado, but I did look them up before, because I had the most beautiful peachy pink giant "rose" shaped mushroom pop up in my backyard several years in a row and wondered what the heck is THAT? lol. Absolutely beautiful!
I was given a sheep's head mushroom by a deer hunter friend. It was wonderful, I think they live on oak too. Eucalyptus trees are kind of toxic, so I'd avoid any mushroom growing on them. We cut it into steaks to fry; absolutely delicious! Sheeps heads don't resemble anything poisonous; they look like a phantom brain growing on the wood.
I haven't foraged for mushrooms since I was a child, and now that you have reminded me of this wonderful pastime I totally want to give it a go again, even if it's just so I can try this delicious looking recipe 😊 thank you for another wonderfully enjoyable and informative video! Love your videos Emmy! I've been binge watching your channel most mornings for the last few weeks as I battle morning sickness, and my 3.5 year old loves to watch with me. Before he ate his dinner tonight he said "itadakimasu!" 😂
I couldn't find "Whoah! Garlic Powder" 3:39 at any of our grocery stores so I just used another brand less cough-inducing instead. ;-)
I need this in my life. I like to roast those large Portobello mushrooms for a "vegetarian steak sandwich", but any variation on this is most welcome in my diet. Thanks, Emmy 😘
I love Popeye's fried chicken, and I love mushrooms, and now I am dreaming of embracing the power of "and" to have them both in the same sandwich! :9
I hope Emmy doesn't change the format of her videos. She's genuine (which is not common nowadays on UA-cam), classy, entertaining, and very informative.
You know it’s good when Emmy slams the table.
Your ending rivaled that of the great one...BadlandsChugs! Also, so happy that you gave a shout out to another YT fav of mine SauceStache!!! Amazing vid! Thanks for brightening our days Emmy!!
Been waiting for this one 😅
I love recipes like this because it gives me ideas for adding veg to the menu. It makes dinner more interesting.
I’m a simple man, I love Popeyes so I clicked 😋
Nothing like Mount Olive pickles and Dukes Mayo. You make us Southerners proud. Mount Olive pickles come from where else but Mount Olive NC. There are two streets CUCUMBER and the Other VINE. They intersect in Mount Olive pickle factory parking lot.
Waiting for the tutorial on turning bread dough into real dough #broke
I have fond memories of foraging for mushrooms and chamomile in Catalunya Spain with my aunt when I was 3 years old. She used to pickle them in vinegar.
Be careful as to which mushrooms you pick though - it is very easy to pick a poisonous mushroom if you don't know your mushrooms.
I'm not a mushroom aficionado, but I did look them up before, because I had the most beautiful peachy pink giant "rose" shaped mushroom pop up in my backyard several years in a row and wondered what the heck is THAT? lol. Absolutely beautiful!
emmy, have you ever tried making something with aquafaba? would love to see a video about that!
Vegan brownies
Hi...look up a recipe for no churn Aquafaba ice-cream. It is delicious!!!!!
@@iriswalter7742 i will try it, thank you!

"GLUGLUGLUGLUGLUGLUGLUGLUGLUGLUGLUGLUG" 😂
I haven't foraged for mushrooms since I was a child, and now that you have reminded me of this wonderful pastime I totally want to give it a go again, even if it's just so I can try this delicious looking recipe 😊 thank you for another wonderfully enjoyable and informative video! Absolutely loved it!❤
"Chicken of the woods"?
This just made me realize I have no idea what a chicken's natural habitat is!
Lol I never thought about it until I saw your comment😂🐓
Mostly fields, plains, and prairies!
The fowl that chickens were domesticated from came from forests in Asia. I think the were called Red Jungle Fowl.
They are originally jungle animals.
@Alec Eleby We've done such a number on their original bodies and capabilities that they'd never last in the jungle. Their wild ancestors could fly, good luck finding a domestic hen that can do that.
That was a beautiful find!! Gorgeous mushrooms, good job, family
