This is great! I’ve seen other tutorials advicing against mixing complementary colors because they make “muddy” colors. But they are actually good for creating shadows! Thanks! ❤️
If you're painting a red barn, you should use the colors next to red on the color wheel. So the light side of the barn would be red-orange and the shadow side would be red violet.
Thanks for this tip! I have to paint a red structure for class. I will definitely try this out 🎉
@GoogleUser Thank you! As a new watercolorist, I tried your technique on the barn I was painting and it looks believable. thank you!
You are the first person to show me exactly what I needed!!!

What if you are painting let’s say a white flower… how do you go about choosing a color for casting shadow?
I have gone with a grey/blue, as I heard shadows tend to be cool shades
Inspite of lot of rubbing using your brush, the color beneath was intact, not lifted by damp brush. Can you please share the secret.
Is that still wet when you paint over the first layer, good man?
What if you have a purple box?? You don’t use yellow for a shadow so??
I guess I’m asking about the opposites .. red, purple and green??
Great question. Would love to know
You would use yellow mixed with the purple to create the shadow on a purple box. You will need to experiment with the ratio and exact version of yellow that makes the shadow look correct to you. Also, don't mix on your paper, you mix the color in your pan.
You should use red violet for the light side and blue violet for the shadow side. The colors on each side of violet (purple) on the color wheel.
Why is the yellow and violet not turning to green?
Because there's red in violet colour.
Please show us more basic 😔
At last someone teaches, showing what he's talking about ,instead of the many idiots out there thinking watching their mouth wagging is helping us understand 😅
