I appreciate your attention to process, and showing us that there was more than one draft of this painting! Making art requires hours of work, and learning.
The step-by-step explanation of creating shadows and your logical reasoning, why was so very much helpful. I absolutely love your style of teaching.!!!
I have wanted to paint seashells for a long time and to capture their delicate shifting colours. Your lessons are gifts, truly, and your paintings are silken webs that hold light. They embody everything I love about watercolour. Thank you, Anna!
As always, your artwork is simply exquisite. I could watch you paint for hours as your use of the most glorious colors and your attention to the finest details come together to produce pure magic that makes my eyes happy. Thank you for sharing your talent and being such a wonderful teacher.
Thank you so much Deborah 😀 This one was fun to make albeit a niche subject {as I can see from relatively low view count hehe } but that's OK! I find these topics are worth exploring in depth sometimes as it helps me to improve my own process. The best part is that these rules work just as well on white / light buildings / urban scenes with strong shadows - even on faces [if you add an underlying skin tone} so many fun subjects to practice on!... Have a wonderful day :)
Hi Anna, thank you so much for sharing this video. I had no knowledge about painting but have started learning and painting after watching your teaching. You’re such wonderful teacher and artist. Truly appreciate and enjoy watching your painting process. Thank you.😊
Thank you Kenny! I am so glad you found this particular video 😊 it’s one of the favourite ”theory” videos made and I really appreciate your feedback ❤️
I love this! I started watching your tutorials about a year ago then I just have been practicing like mad .. but now I realize my work is not the level I’d like it to be so I’m watching more of your tips and they are really addressing a majority of my problems!! Thank you so much! Your work is amazing!
Again, and again, an excellent designed tutorial! You bring “theory” into practice so that we can actually truly learn how to apply. I truly appreciate your talents as an artist, and an instructional designer. ❤❤❤
Really enjoying these shadow videos. Shadows always my favourite part of the process and I always want to just jump to them and get that dark in. But! It does not always reward me…. Your step by step gradual application is brilliant and I love the addition of reflected light colours and no greys. This shell looks super fun.
Hello dear friend. Congratulations on the wonderful video you shared with us. Very interesting, thanks for sharing, please keep in touch please, 💯,.💖 💗,💯,💯,.,
SO glad I found you Anna! Your works are stunningly beautiful, such excellence. You are refreshing and inspiring - thank you for your generosity in sharing your techniques🤍
you have such a beautiful style, it's truly a gift. your use of colour is so masterful and delicate it's my favourite approach I've seen. thank you for sharing your wonderful work.
This was such a helpful video I always struggle with both white subjects and shadows. You hit both areas in this video and also help me to think about contrast. Seeing that you make multiple paintings to workout the kinks is also a helpful reminder. Thank you so much Anna
Ahhh thank you 💗 this one didn’t get a lot of views I thought it was maybe too heavy on explanations… but the concepts are useful - I’ll bring them up again in the context of a portraiture’s for next tutorial 😊
Anna, your varied use of color in your shadows is both illuminating and inspirational. It really just makes my heart happy. I am an intermediate artist and though I’ve followed a large number of artists in my self-taught artistic journey, you are the first I’ve seen to use such beautiful color, as opposed to “greyed” shadows, and I am so excited to try this in my own art. Thank you for sharing your time and honed talent. It has been incredibly eye opening! Blessings for a joyous holiday season. 🌈🎄🎉
Anna, i truly enjoyed the painting of this beautiful seashell! The tips and techniques are so well explained. How I wish I could paint something so delicate and colourful. Thank you. Helene❤
Thank you so much Helene! I am happy to hear the explanation was good:) I always spend more time on the voice-over vs the painting itself, but it helps me too as I get to think through the steps and improve my process. Have a wonderful day!
I forgot to add that the tip about the yellow is outstanding. So often one starts with the yellows, so that is a rule that is made to be broken,as the saying goes. When I took workshops with the late Diane Maxey (she did a lot of florals and still lifes), her favorite color to glaze with was yellow.
Love your videos. Question - I noticed you are using an IPad, can you share what software/ applications you use to help you in your art. A video on this topic would be great on how to use the apps too. Thanks
Very helpful, thanks. I'm working on the sunbird and lemons and struggling with shadows, so I'm glad I found this one just now. As always, you're a great teacher, Anna.
It's so beautiful. I love your work. You make it look so easy. Especially filming it. I just started a watercolour UA-cam channel for absolute beginners and I realised the most difficult part is filming whist painting😅... You make it so seamless. Thank you for sharing, love it🥰
So true! I know exactly what you are talking about - filming requires a whole new set of skills (not to mention equipment!) and it took me ~ 4 years to figure out the details (I am still a beginner when it comes to cameras and gave to watch tutorials on everything- from lighting to audio to editing) it’s like a 2nd job at this point 😊 but as long as you are having fun and enjoying the process - your channel will grow and you will get more and more comfortable! 💜💜💜
@@AnnaBucciarelli Oh yes, I'm really enjoying doing it. Ok so in 4 years I could be where you are now... Yes, I'd love that☺, thank you for your encouragement🥰
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU🎊🎉 BEST WISHES FOR YOUR UPCOMING WORKS This so pretty vivid and lovely painting. Love your works. Which paper is using for your works. If possible kindly suggest 🙏
The initial sketch feels the most daunting to me. Would you consider devoting a few moments at the beginning of your videos to guide us through the process?
I have several videos on this topic (look for one of the earliest red roses from 3 years ago) and even a full live walk through on my PATREON that I posted last month describing my outline process (I call it an anchor point method) about an hour long 😊
Thank you for the tutorial, Anna! I love seeing colorful shadow, but I suck at it 😅 I have a question; do you have any tips on overcoming the fear of painting hard edges? Especially when painting shadows like in step 2 when you started painting the flower shadow. Whenever I paint hard edges shadows, it always ends up ugly and I soften it up a little in the end but not lost edges 😥
Shadows are not easy - I totally get it! I would recommend diluting the pigment more {keep in mind it looks darker when wet, but also a bit more contrast in video vs. real life}. Go lighter at first and glaze more slowly to see where you end up. Another thing that might help is to make sure the background is completely dry when you add more layers. And finally, I find transparent pigments work much better for glazing - anthing granulating always tends to muddy up the colors. Hope this helps! :)
The main subject is amazing, the shell is exquisite and you really master light! But you are overdoing it, with the flowers behind, the main subject is getting lost... in real photo, the background flowers would probably be a bit blurred (depth of focus), or maybe playing with contrast... there is nowhere for the eyes to rest, it feels burdened and heavy. This doesn't change the fact that you really have a great talent and you really master watercolors ❤

Great demonstration of how to paint shadows. The delicate layers of paint bring the shell and flowers to life.
