How To Get Your BMW Ready For An Emissions Test

- In this video I show you how to fast track the emissions readiness on your BMW. If you cleared your codes or recently flashed back to a stock tune and want to know how to get your car ready for emissions as quickly as possible this video will be helpful.
Every time you reset the check engine light on any car manufactured after 1996 you need to do what's called a drive cycle. The ECU or DME in this case will need to do a bunch of checks before your car can pass an emissions test or an annual state inspection.
I'm driving my 2008 BMW 335i with the N54 motor in this video but really what I show here applied to any OBD II BMW.

Thanks for this video! I followed these steps last night and got the last 3 sensors ready. Past inspection this morning. I was worried it wouldn’t work because my gas tank had been filled 30 miles earlier.

I was able to get all passes except for evap within 20 minutes. Just drive 20-30 mph for a couple minutes and then drive 40-70 mph for a couple minutes and you will be set (just make sure you're always below 3k rpm). evap does not have to be ready/complete for an emissions pass. Thanks for the video this was really helpful. I had the MHD N54 flasher that was able to read DME codes as I drove making it a bit easier to determine when certain tests passed.
@cheese, when you did your cold start/idle, did you idle in Park or Drive? Can I insert a few minutes of stop and go driving between the idle phase and the 20-30 mph phase? Thanks!

It should. I'm tuned and have done it every time.
I only followed the cold start/light throttle steps to get that 1 sensor ready. Once I seen the sensor was ready in MHD, I started driving normally for like 100miles or so for the other sensors to ready too

Dude for real lol.....i just made a thread on one of the forums. I used another members suggestion and did the drive cycle on jackstands. Where i live there was not enough road and thus no safe way to do the drive cycle.
Oh yeah I've heard that could work also. I'd just be scared if the car somehow came off the stands. Not likely but if someone isn't on perfectly level ground it's possible. Thanks for the info though.
Which one did you try? I live where there’s always traffic and impossible to do this. Might try the jack stands. I have a 2001 330 I’m trying to pass the cat. It’s not ready yet.
I live in LA can't drive 20..30 cause of traffic and light and do 40..60 on the freeway only at night..

How did you code the secondary air system to show not available? I've deleted the SAP and installed catless headers on my e46 and have since coded out both of those things but i'm still having issues with the readiness monitor? I have bytetuner and all the standard bmw tools(inpa etc)
Do i have to put stock tune for inspection also ?
I been having this odd issue with the BOV that sounds like yours at the 4:07 mark, is this normal? This literally occurred after my hybrid twins and inlets.

Having difficulty understanding this. If you have an MHD tune, it disables sensor readiness to avoid the CEL, right? You need to flash back to stock to get the sensors to activate then perform the drive cycle so they show ready. If you have a aftermarket high flow catted DP, do you need to quickly pass emissions before the CEL comes back? Or is the assumption that an aftermarket high flow cat won’t throw a CEL? If so, can the MHD tune be modified so that it doesn’t disable sensors?
Is there catless downpipe other than the sensor spacer?
how do you sit in a gear in a manual or just neutral ?
Do they go by drive cycle when cleared or this drive cycle
I have active codes in my DME but no check engine light. All is completed but o2 and catalyst, still show as incomplete. Do these active or shadow codes cause the process to stop? Going to fix all issues but want to get off this ten day in NY. Stock tune with oem stock downpipes
Hi, my check engine light on today . It say catalytic converter defect . But I have change it one month ago . Anyway I erase the code and check engine light gone . So my question is will it come back again. If so how long it will take to come back. Thanks

I drove with bad kat about a week but no engine light on and after I drove another week without Kat no engine light on . When I change my both Kat and drove 500km not engine light. Then I put fuel injector cleaner and drove another 150 km . And after engine light on and it says on my obd2 Kat defect
I really need help. I have a CEL in my BMW caused by fuel pump. I was told that it would cost me $1200 to fix it, which I can’t afford. So I went to a smog station and let them delete the codes. They erased the codes but they told me to do a drive cycle so the monitors become ready. Once I turned the car off and turn it back on, the CEL showed up again. I don’t know if there is anyway not to fix the fuel pump and pass the smog test. Any tricks, anything could help. I’d appreciate it.

Do you have to do the steps one after the other non stop? I have two roads in mind but I'd have to stop and turn onto it.

I'm had the car ready but when I took it some how it went back to not ready. I had done this test but my OBD still shows not ready.
50% throttle at 20..30 how can you do that. yeah the test will fail it you drive over 60MPH or rep to suddent or over 3k RPMs
CAT is a must for ready ness ,you can do smog without EVAP .

Replaced the post catalytic O2 sensor at the BMW dealership in California. I understand the on-board computer has mostly been reset. My recent California smog check failed, as 3 components are NOT ready. For my BMW 535D to pass the California smog check, I need to perform a drive cycle to get the OBD-II computer ready. I have driven 370 miles since the post catalytic O2-sensor replacement. However, the OBC code reader is still showing 3 components not ready. I am hoping these steps work!

They should have worked fine. It's always the same damn sensors because nobody drives their car like that.
my catalyst, o2sensor, and evap wont get ready:( drove on highway for 2 hours everything got ready except these 3
You have to do the drive at 55 mph for 3 min then let it slow down to almost stop (do it twice) without breaking.
Nice! Will do this next year Also I have the same turbo setup (AA stage 2+) but your cabin seems to be way quieter🤔 my turbos spool like crazy. Could it be the BOV That makes it louder?
Its way louder normally but the stock tune numbs the sound considerably.

Thanks for the great video. I had to jump my car few weeks back so now of course I need to do my emissions test. I drove it for 410 miles and I got everything to get "ready" at around 378 miles. Exept the Evap which never gets ready but they let u pass here in Chicago. But my secondary air refuses to get ready WTH. Anyone know why ?
So you didn't do these steps the gentleman gave? You just drove the extended miles?

Followed this on my e92 m3 that is catless with a tune that forces emissions readiness. I was able to get everything ready but my oxygen sensors, but for NYS inspection you are allowed one cycle to not be ready. Passed. Thanks.

How do you set Fuel System that is not Ready ;D I have same ash... cats and Fuel System not ready, I just did round trip 400 miles in last 3 days, I should have watched the videos before going 100mph left and right.... Now back to highway tomorrow I guess
@4:25 you mentioned you can have one (1) monitor "Not Ready" - is that a national emissions law? I'm curious if that's applicable to California?
I called my SMOG shop and apparently CA law dictates 1999 and older you can have any one (1) monitor not ready, however 2000 and newer, you're allowed one (1) not ready: but it HAS to be the EVAP. Aka... your CAT has to by ready. Unfortunate since this is my hardest one to get to switch to ready.....................

You ever figure it out? MIL I believe is Malfunction Indicator Lamp. So it looks like it's failing to command the light on.

You have to be able to coast almost to a stop or no go.
Did your Sec Air System. Monitor Complete right away. I have an 04 bmw 545i. All monitors ready except sec air system and evap.

i put 1000 miles on my 2011 bmw x5 diesel and still two sensors are not ready
Because the procedure to activate these it to let the car slow down from 50 mph to almost stop and nobody does that.

How much did you yet your salvage 335i for ?
what if you have a manual transmission do you Decelerate and Come to a stop & Idle in gear while you have your foot on the clutch for 5 mins?
I would think you could just leave it in neutral with your foot off the clutch.
Will this work only if you flash back to stock tune with high flow Downpipes or can this work with the tune on it?

Any of you BMW gurus know if a bmw N54 would or can pass a smog without the disa valve? Just curious as to how much this part plays a factor into the emissions level... I know the SES light is an auto failure but say one wasn’t throwing code for that particular component...

Have a couple questions didnu obviously install the stock downpipes back on right? And I also have flex fuel didnu have to go into ur dme and disable the flex fuel itself aswell? I’m sure u did since u flashed back to stock
If you have catless downpipes and install the dp fix and flash back to stock you can follow this video to pass. If you have a flex fuel sensor and flash back to stock it would just disregard it. You need to fill up with 93 though.
So what ur saying is I don’t have to disable any of the flex fuel stuff in the dme just flashing back to stock is good enough?

Its the drive 55 mph for 3 minutes then let it slow down without breaking. I always have the same issue.
@@TheFrenchPug my issue ended up being with MHD and the IS stock file it was never the original one so I took it to a local BMW shop had them flash it back to stock for me and on the same drive home it was all ready for smog
My Cat is not ready but everything else is cool. Are you saying a drive longer than 15 minutes should do the trick and do I have to be under 60 or could I do 70?
the dealer paper says it you can't drive over 60MPH, go over 3K RPM or abrupt accelations...
I have catless down pipes but how am I supposed to pass emissions if no one makes n54 dp fix anymore, does anyone know a fix do fool or DME into thinking there is cats?
If your state allows one monitor not ready...which can be for cats if you have catless downpipes...you will pass. Just need to make sure all your other monitors show ready especially evaporative check.,,,which is a pain to get to show complete. Follow this drive cycle and check to see if all monitors show ready except catalyst.....if your state allows 1 not ready then you will pass.....no dp fix necessary.
I think VRSF has a dp fix you can hook up to dme for the smog check

If you have catted downpipes than you'd follow this. If you have catless downpipes and a dp fix installed you would follow this as well.

I always have to do this for my BMW and it is a royal PITA and dangerous no matter what even when drive in right slow lane with hazards on at nonbusy time some clown almost always rear ends me!

TLDR: Just drive for a few hours in circles to pass the emissions testing, preferably use up an entire tank of gas to ensure it hits the 1/4 to 3/4 tank range cycle. This use of a tank of gas to pass the test will help reduce global warming. Makes a lot of sense. Am I right?
Plus with gas prices these days it makes total sense to be forced to drive around for hours unnecessarly to make sure we don't contribute any pollution into the atmosphere. 👍😂

I hate doing this every time. Why can't there be a scan tool that sends out a signal and activates it? Stupid system.
I have a stage 2 340i - do I need to tune this back to stock tune or can I do this with the current stage?
Hopefully you were able to do it with the tune. It only checks for sensors registering with the ECU.

@Dvassi123 Best decision ever. Hopefully you bought a Lexus! I still have my 2009 335i. Just put new Vargas turbos, oil pan gasket, and high pressure fuel pump in last week. Then got my tag renewal today showing smog needed :(

So it takes a while for me to get on the highway or a place where, I don't need to come to a full stop, for me to continue driving at a steady pace. What do I do in my situation when I have to come to a full stop at a red light?

I have the same problem… i live in southern California. There is no such thing as a stretch of non busy road and even then, i have to get to that road from my house and no way i can go while doing this, do these steps have to be done back to back to back or can i stop between the stages?

When you sit for 5 min in gear do you mean to let it sit in DRIVE or put in PARK and let it sit fir 5 min???

Leave it in gear and idle for 5 minutes. Man this is super annoying to do properly not living out in an open space. I'm hoping I can make my sensors ready tomorrow. Tried today and some are still not ready. NEVER LET YOUR BATTERY DIE. I learned the hard way and have to go thru this BS. Hope it passes, don't want to spend anymore money on the M5 than I already have!

Yeah they just scan obd. Hopefully they get rid of the program altogether.

In CA the smog stations say the catalyst monitor needs to be ready when all others are ready. I did this procedure 3 times and catalyst still not ready. How many miles do I need to drive?

@@tonykari5124 hi, turns out my outside air temp sensor was missing. I read somewhere online that missing sensors could cause issues. Go figure. I took my Z4 to a shop and the guy put a sensor in and then it passed smog.

You shouldn't need to do it on that new of a car. Are they requiring it in your state?

@VoulezVous In California, 2015 year newer cars don't have to be smogged until 8 years afterwards. But, they charge us up the a$% for tags.

@VoulezVous That is how it used to be out here. But California just figured out that they can charge more for new tags and eliminate paperwork. Just like the mileage tax Newsome is trying to pass now.

1st gear is in gear.
Just an FYI, the evap issue was due to the 1/4 to 3/4 tank issue. I've had lots of luck getting monitors ready even with slight deviations from the drive cycle, but evap will never reset if the gas tank level is out of range.
Does the tank need to be within or outside those ranges?
I've never paid attention to gas level and passed after drive cycle.
