My 2008 Nissan Altima failed the emission test and could not find the cause. Sparkplug, Injectors, MAF, PCV valve, Oxygen sensors, Catalytic converter, Piston rings, Seaform treatment everything was addressed but the problem still persisted. Finally, someone noticed that the temperature gauge was always showing a very low value. And it was found the thermostat valve was faulty and was stuck open and the ECU was sensing it as cold start condition always and the fuel air ratio was running rich. The fuel economy was much better after replacing the thermostat valve but I miss the sporty acceleration and pick-up when it was running rich. Thought might be useful to someone going through similar dilemma.
@Patrick Bzdula I know this old post but I suspect that's what's happening to mine, and legit scared the mechanic is going to charge me a lot for a simple fix
Thank you! With your advice I was able to turn around 3 of the 4 I/M "not ready" errors into "READY" and passed the test and saved me hundreds. Thank you!
@juliawei8990 I did everything he suggested in the video. I also purchased a cheap scanner (don't recall the name) to see what codes were still showing up. Then (with it plugged in) drove the car at least 50 mph to warm up the engine until most of the codes cleared. As soon as they were cleared I drove to the I/M center to get tested keeping the car on until they were ready to pull it in for testing. Hope that makes sense!?
Premium gas is NOT cleaner only has more aromatic triple bond hydrocarbons which when broken release more energy, providing your engine has the compression to break those bonds. One other tip add heet to the fuel. Heet is methanol which has oxygen on the molecule. This helps a more complete combustion at the very least adds more oxygen out the tailpipe dilluting hc.

Listen to this guy,I took my 1997 Toyota Tacoma yesterday and it did not pass the emissions at 15 miles a hour.Today I drove my car for 45 minutes on the freeway and I put in Chevron 91 octane and put air in my tires.........and it passed today, and ready to get registered.
last week my 93 honda failed the emissions test. mechanic advice me to add premium gas and a bottle of seafoam to gas tank and drive it hard for about a week. did so and i thought i was f'd after reading most of everyones comments saying not to add premium gas. car passed smog, no issues.
Those people telling you to NOT use Premium gasoline do NOT know their automotive science ! They are ignorant ! The 3 components to fire an engine are fuel, oxygen, heat. Premium gas fires at a higher temperature thereby burning more gas with less unburned gas and thus less emissions, thereby causing your car to Pass the Emissions Test

don't forget if your cat is working below 95% you'll get the CEL... you can always buy a $10 cat-sensor extender... almost always works as far as the check-engine light is concerned. Or try heat-cleaning your cat-converter by driving your car at 4000-6000 rpm for a straight 30 min, sometimes this will even fix it if just carbon-clogged.
I lived in Saint Louis for 10 years where they required emissions tests. What a freakin boondoggle and major pain in the rear. Even if your check engine light was on for a non-emissions reason (faulty knock sensor?) they still failed you.

It has 326.000 miles on the engine, and it has never been touched.LT1 V8 engine, Even the timing chain is original. don't drive it much anymore just because, well I just dont . It has recently sat for 2 years without even being started. Had to get a smog test . Charged the battery, it literally started in a 1 second crank, just BOOM , running. Gas is 2 years old, but car was running beautifully. I drove it around for about 10 minutes and went to smog test. Fingers crossed, IT PASSED WITH FLYING COLORS, all tested exhaust items were WELL BELOW maximum. AMAZING. I forgot how much fun it is to drive, so I'm getting new tires, an oil change, and start driving it again. 😊
Here in Indiana there is only 2 counties that have to pass emissions. The rest of the entire state you do not have to pass, you can buy a 500 dollar beater and get it plated on the spot
Those obd2 scanners were like 400$ when they first came out. 600 if the dealers was willing to sell one... Even older cars with carbs had emissions (garbage).components.. TRICK too passing is a hot engine block/exhaust manifold. Let it idle for 45 min and somewhere in that time remove the air filter(if carberateed or throttle body) the extra volume air (less restricted) without mixture adjustment leans out the fuel air ratio. Just enough to make the engine seems to run funny but not stall out at a light. It will also help heat up cylinder walls causing higher engine heat. However do reinstall air filter immediately after leaving the test. NEVER run an engine long periods without an air filter. It WILL destroy your engine within a year possible days.. special times for special regulations...
Lisa Hall 👋 My successful emissions testing pass recipe for several years. What annoys me with this is unlike a broken light or a bad wheel bearing which you can fix and know it's fixed, you can't really do this yourself and easily test the emissions to ensure it doesn't fail again
Yeah.. I failed 3 weeks ago, i found a burst hose on the pcv valve. Replaced that hose and the pcv valve... today i ran some throttlebody cleaner through the throttlebody. Coming week i'll do some airflowsensor meter cleaning. Just hope that it will pass the next time i go there. Otherwise i'll have to bring it to a garage to be financially ripped off and have some sneaky small things broken on purpose so they hope i'll be back later 🙄🙂
Animal productions if it's glowing hot it's probably partially clogged. If it gets worse your car will run worse as the engine warms up. Eventually it will stall out and won't restart.
Premium (high octane) gas is NOT cleaner. It burns slower and resists pre ignition. This is needed for high compression, turbocharged, high performance engine's. It will INCREASE your emissions because you will not have a complete burn.
I have a 1991 Chevy S10 4.3 and recently I did a bunch of work to prepare it for smog, map sensor, EGR solenoid and valve, fuel filter, spark plugs, O2 sensor, catalytic converter, idol control valve, and even a emissions additive, the funny thing is the first time it failed based on emissions but not visual then I added a catalytic converter and the O2 sensor and the emissions went up that makes no sense. Drove it for more than 40 minutes getting it hot, kept it on while waiting. No check engine light, no smoke. Now I'm going to try evap and a new gas cap. I heard 20 -30 drive cycles after disconnecting battery or clearing CEL & codes or it'll fail. Seafoam 1 tank. Cataclean on 1/4 tank. Fill with premium. Air Filter. PCV valve maybe. Drive FWY 40 mins.
Up where I am there's no dyno testing just obd2 for everything gas that is Obd2. Depending on year , yes one or two monitors inc. depending on year. For the evap monitor faults , what I do is fool the monitor as to not run and not display the MIL. And you pass the test. Fixing it is the best but for those that can't afford the cost , well it's an option. Hope you mention that tip.
+Jack Skeleton Hi Jack, only the evap monitor you can manipulate and it will not set the check engine light. I think this might be in part two , I wouldn't want to spoil anything. Check out part two and I will too.
+Jack Skeleton Jack diagnosing is not easy for some and multiple codes in my experience are interrelated. Manipulating the evap monitor will not help you if the codes are set from another monitor. I'm sure this channel has plenty of diagnostic vids to help you with.
A vehicle will fail for incomplete monitors if: 96-99 vehicle: any more than 1 monitor is incomplete 00-newer : any other than the evap monitor is incomplete. 98-06 diesel vehicle: any monitor incomplete. 07 -newer vehicle: any more than 2 are incomplete. your welcome.
That because your having a emissions issue. So your complaining about a light coming on cause you a emissions malfunction causing you to fail emissions testing? What a shocker. Get it fixed and you’ll pass it’s that simple.
Same of the OBD test in Ohio, The only exception for that can be if your car will downgrade and be tested on the dyno. Usually 1996 to 2002 model years.
Emissions testing is better in North Carolina because they do a visual inspection of the catalytic converter to make sure it's in tact, make sure there's a muffler, make sure a custom exhaust is legit, make sure there's no exhaust leaks, make sure it doesn't blow smoke, there's smog check, no dyno, revving the engine to piss off customers, make sure the PVC and or EGR is in tact, check the O2 sensors, and OBD II testing. Cars and trucks from 1995 and earlier don't have to take the emissions test, diesel powered vehicles and motorcycles don't have to take the emissions test, if a truck from any year and if the truck is newer than 1996 have a "Farm Truck" license plate, it doesn't have to take the emissions test and safety inspection. My truck is 98 with OBD II, it has true dual exhaust with glasspack mufflers and OEM catalytic converters, it still pass the emissions test and safety inspection.
I remember going to the homie.. park the car lower the windows keys inside and your put the money and n registration.. comeback in an hour just like that..
@@prettybaby80 cars have something called "Readiness monitors" you have to drive the car until all the readiness monitors are set to "ok", with the exception of 1(model year 2000 or newer allows this I believe). So 1 monitor can still be on "incomplete status" and still pass.
. Disconnect the battery and you clear the codes in the computer With no codes the vehicle WILL NOT PASS an OBD test, You will have to drive the car for about a week to reset the codes if you run out of license plate you will have to buy a 30 day tag or risk a citation for driving on an expired license. In Ohio that is a 130.00 ticket plus points on your DL.
What do you do if you have a 2009 car & the battery died just before inspection. I changed my battery. The car has no other problems -no check engine light, nothing but when you go for a car inspection it shows on the OBD2 two monitors -O25 & EVA in the red. How do you clear this to remove at least 1 monitor so you can pass inspection. I have driven over 400 miles & no change. It still shows these 2 monitors. HELP!
Great videos. I've watched 2 of yours so far and learned a ton. Easy to understand. Straight to the point. I appreciate it, keeo uo the good work. Liked and subbed
My 06 Altima drops the check engine light when the negative is disconnected for several minutes as well. I just replaced the valve cover, plugs, and oil, so I'm hoping it will not return as it was showing a misfire in cylinder 1. I was terrified I screwed it up, but so far it's a-ok. Inspection is due this month. Wish me luck!
in OH when there was testing. you just had to go back 3 times. on the fourth try was a automatic pass. but if or when they put your car on the rollers. there was a good chance they would blow it up. if it was a pretty old car that was in poor shape.
Well here in my state of North Carolina. There is no passing with the check engine light automatic failure. We don't have dinos just plug in the OBD2 while the car is running. We don't check their filters we don't check oil all you do is check to see if all your emission components are there EGR catalytic converter O2 sensors excetera. We legally can't look at the brakes unless you hear metal to metal
Geez, chicos! Convert to Hemp, so when you run it in for tests, the person will be so high from the exhausts that they will pass it- problem solved (!).
As far as the OBD-II, I wonder how much work it would be to spoof one. Grabbing a port and wire harness from a junk yard and then wiring it into a microcontroller dev board and coding it to mimic the protocol.
Best way to pass the test is to reroute the exhaust so it exits halfway the car on the side invisibly, then make a fake exhaust at the original exhaust location which pumps out lavender perfume with a fan 😅
I live in New York is no more dynamometers who uses anymore and one quick hint if somebody is using a dynamometer and your Knox is too high just wet your air filter and you're past the first time
holy moly THANK YOU! I didn't know that n/a meant! I thought it was the same as incomplete. I'm guessing I don't have to bother with the ones that are n/a? I have htd catalyst, secondary air sys, ac refridge monitors as N/a in my 2006 honda civic.
U think that's funny huh buddy???? I will have u know that I blew out my bung hole ring eating too much taco bell and weinersnitzel and that ain't no laughing matter!!!!! Now everytime I fart it sounds like a cool sea breeze.
My car just failed its MOT IN UK on emissions lol. I know it needs a new o2 sensor as i got P0130 code last week and light came on. We ordered a new o2 sensor and fingers crossed for Friday.
I have no lights on just the battery was removed and replaced just bought the car last week and it says O2 sensor monitor not ready so they rejected it
Great easy to understand content. It's like a magic trick once u showed those lil remedy's i was like duh. but I didnt think of them on my own. Thanks man I will be doing at least 2or 3 of the things on my 96 mustang CO. Emissions are a B!+@# . Loose gas cap and it's been proven thru a investigation they fell cars with no issues I guess alot of states don't Dyno or only Dyno but I believe what the ppl want is the on board computer ready only bcuz of how bad Colorado emissions has Conducted business.
Why would a dirty air filter hurt anything at idle? It's a restriction, so your idle air control valve will just open a bit more to compensate. You're throttling with your air filter instead of throttle valve, which is the biggest restriction in your intake.
IAC bypasses the throttle body. All of the air goes through the filter. The question should be...why, since the MAP/MAF sensor knows how much air is going in so it knows how much fuel to put. Also, O2 is measuring the mixture. I guess dirty filter could equal more load? More load = more fuel?
good vids got a question 1994 lhs 3.5 emissions test/ hc standard 0.80 mine is 0.91 and nox standard 2.50 mine is 2.84 i changed oil/flush coolant for winter/fuel system clean drove on highway 25 minutes before test any ideas car runs very good thank you

Chris Bevins so u saying we are running rich in finland and other european countries which have 98 as a standard and some gas stations have some random premium
I did that the check engine light still on. . Had new catalytic converter twice and the two sensors visually someone said they didn't really see the manifold is cracked all I want is my card pass emissions and use it a little longer 2011 Chevy Equinox wholesale their 2.5 motor
How do I pass smog using this method? I have code P0450 fault and a P0441 pending, all pointing to EVAP system, that keeps bringing back the MIL every morning. I've inspected and tested for leaks, and correct voltage, and faulty VSV sensors.
What about using fuel cleaners like CataClean? My car didn't pass smog due to the bad emission but there's no check engine light on, do you think changing air filter, spark plugs and running fuel cleaner, making sure the car is hot, would help it pass?
premium would more likely make you fail so be warned on that step as. with higher grade if you car is not designed to burn it there will be more unburnt fuel going out the exhaust
I've never heard of a car being dyno tested for emissions test i could be wrong have been before but dyno is to check for horse power if i am wrong please let me know i am in new hampshire never heard of dyno for emissions test an yes I've watched local garage check my car for inspection
dyno tests are for cars without obd2, put them on the rollers chock the front wheels and perform a series of tests at different speeds hooks exhaust gas analyzer to exhaust pipe and checks co, hc, nox levels present in exhaust stream.

+Steve Rob how do you fool the monitors?
+Jack Skeleton Hi Jack, only the evap monitor you can manipulate and it will not set the check engine light. I think this might be in part two , I wouldn't want to spoil anything. Check out part two and I will too.
+Steve Rob i hope it is part 2 my mustang is giving so many cel codes out of no where an i have to test my car soon
+Jack Skeleton btw i was asking because my evap canister purge cel came up
+Jack Skeleton Jack diagnosing is not easy for some and multiple codes in my experience are interrelated. Manipulating the evap monitor will not help you if the codes are set from another monitor. I'm sure this channel has plenty of diagnostic vids to help you with.
A vehicle will fail for incomplete monitors if:
96-99 vehicle: any more than 1 monitor is incomplete
00-newer : any other than the evap monitor is incomplete.
98-06 diesel vehicle: any monitor incomplete.
07 -newer vehicle: any more than 2 are incomplete.
your welcome.
for smog inspections in Ca.
+the doge TRUE!
Depends on your states laws.
the doge
what about 95!? :(
The scanner will erase the engine light or trouble codes but if you don’t fix the problem it will comeback
#1 Move to a city that does not require emission tests. Stop giving these tyrants your money (taxes, fees, etc)
Thank you for your advices, i applied them on my old Russian car and i passed the emission test.
Thanks man. You always come through with good info.
Haha, i just pour in e85 to a 15-20% mix with the gas. Works every time👌
It's an automatic fail in Hellinois if the CEL is on. Fascist racketeering at its finest.
Struggling in hellinois right now
That because your having a emissions issue.
Same for Ohio if your using OBD2 , Ohio is phasing out the tailpipe test as of 01-01-2020
Same in NJ
Love thee 2X4 holding the hood up...
gotta love the clear coat the did on the cars in the 90s
I think all the auto makers bought the clear coat from the lowest bidder.
Thank you for all good points simple to remember ❤
Im pissed cause this is the last year my state requires emissions yet i still have to go through this hassle just for one year
And don't forget to check your blinker fluid !
Removing the battery terminal will not get you to pass your smog . I repeat it will not!
Free Man it will hinder it which is my issue now. I changed battery is smog people say car won’t pass inspection. Computer is cleared not able to read
In Ohio it will earn you are return trip and maybe a 30 day tag.
What it will get you is 5-10 day to drive the vehicle to reset the ECU
This a a fact to “ ALL “ Californians .
@@prettybaby80 cars have something called "Readiness monitors" you have to drive the car until all the readiness monitors are set to "ok", with the exception of 1(model year 2000 or newer allows this I believe). So 1 monitor can still be on "incomplete status" and still pass.
One more- I temporarily overinflated the drive tires by 10 pounds- being rock solid gives zero resistance on the rollers
Is that real?
So what does that help pass smog or not ?
I do the same thing, except I over-inflate by 5 lbs instead of 10. I pass every time. I may go to 10 lbs over next time just to be safe...
Rollers will no longer be available as of 01-01-2020
@@davidwamsley5109 Wait, like they wont do dyno test after the first of the year?
This video is so informative thank you so much.
HELP!
Thanks a bunch! Best video on emissions testing prep.
Strike that, exclaim the opposite.
glad i dont have emissions test in my state or inspections
I'm a lil late, but what state are you in?
+Jimmy Thompson California
Oscar Lopez Sounds like I need to move.
I would guess Maine but as there are no emissions tests but there are still general safety inspections. You can even pass in Maine with the CEL on.
What state is that
Great videos.
Spend some money..get it serviced every year
tight wad..
in OH when there was testing. you just had to go back 3 times. on the fourth try was a automatic pass. but if or when they put your car on the rollers. there was a good chance they would blow it up. if it was a pretty old car that was in poor shape.
Rainy day is great for NOx failures as moist air burns cooler and reduces NOx creation.
Convert to Hemp, so when you run it in for tests, the person will be so high from the exhausts that they will pass it-
problem solved (!).
Good Stuff Keep On Rockin
As far as the OBD-II, I wonder how much work it would be to spoof one. Grabbing a port and wire harness from a junk yard and then wiring it into a microcontroller dev board and coding it to mimic the protocol.
Thank you for this video!
Best way to pass the test is to reroute the exhaust so it exits halfway the car on the side invisibly, then make a fake exhaust at the original exhaust location which pumps out lavender perfume with a fan 😅
HAHA
thanks, this was a big help!
I have htd catalyst, secondary air sys, ac refridge monitors as N/a in my 2006 honda civic.
hey after resetting my check engine light how many miles should i run before getting smog test? i have a 97 toyota 4 runner thanks
in ireland you cant leave your car ticking over at the test centre because they leave them there for a while be fore the test
+Jim Goose interesting, just gona have to make sure you don't wait too long before your turn than.
same old crap in Waterford mate,i just sit in the car with it running in the car park using a spare key.
Tarsneyisle Estrela,s genus
Great, clear communication and imformative
Eat 3 meals in a row at Taco Bell and you'll be passing emissions...
U think that's funny huh buddy???? I will have u know that I blew out my bung hole ring eating too much taco bell and weinersnitzel and that ain't no laughing matter!!!!! Now everytime I fart it sounds like a cool sea breeze.
😂
How many miles would u say I need to drive my 06 Honda before I reset it?
50
Really easy video to follow. Thank you
Help! Emission test: every emission passed, except Oxygen sensor = not pass but I got p0421 code. Is it the cat or O2 sensor's problem?
YOUR THE BEST BROTHER MUCH LOVE.
My car just failed its MOT IN UK on emissions lol. I know it needs a new o2 sensor as i got P0130 code last week and light came on. We ordered a new o2 sensor and fingers crossed for Friday.
So my evap says unset still and i replaced ig recently and i out 670 miles thru out a week and still says unset. Help plz.
Ours isn't set either, don't know if it will pass here in Texas. 😕
Did you pass your inspection Kraig Butcher?
I have no lights on just the battery was removed and replaced just bought the car last week and it says O2 sensor monitor not ready so they rejected it
I bought an OBD2 from autel al329 and it all checks out all good now
Thanx for these good tips.
I was trying to watch a video on how to pass your emotions. My mistake
Nope, passing gas. Exhaust gas that is.
I'm crying with you.
*Stray Admin* is they most Legit personality I've ever seen I'm a testimony of his work too
I'm great i got to work with him Guys him guys now I've passed my test with even being present
Thank you guys for they recommendation
"Evap" monitor is always the hardest test to complete.
More load = more fuel?
good vids got a question 1994 lhs 3.5 emissions test/ hc standard 0.80 mine is 0.91 and nox standard 2.50 mine is 2.84 i changed oil/flush coolant for winter/fuel system clean drove on highway 25 minutes before test any ideas car runs very good thank you
if your car does not need premium it will run rich therefore you will put out excess Smaug and not pass your admissions do not listen to this guy
Chris Bevins what the hell is smaug?...(answer) A mental midget..A product of the future generations..U got some learning to do boy.. Start with spelling...let me axe you a question... Did you GRADIATE...Jethro Bodine....
chicago outfit stf
Chris Bevins so u saying we are running rich in finland and other european countries which have 98 as a standard and some gas stations have some random premium
All cars can cope with octane ra going from 87 to 104. No issues will arise.
J0lel the US uses different octane ratings than Europe so a 91 in the US is about a 98 is Europe
I did that the check engine light still on. . Had new catalytic converter twice and the two sensors visually someone said they didn't really see the manifold is cracked all I want is my card pass emissions and use it a little longer 2011 Chevy Equinox wholesale their 2.5 motor
Like to clear the engine light
How do I pass smog using this method? I have code P0450 fault and a P0441 pending, all pointing to EVAP system, that keeps bringing back the MIL every morning. I've inspected and tested for leaks, and correct voltage, and faulty VSV sensors.
Does premium fuel actually help you pass if your car wasn't made for it
I would think it would cause more unburnt fuel to leave the tailpipe
It was very helpful video. Thanks!
What about using fuel cleaners like CataClean? My car didn't pass smog due to the bad emission but there's no check engine light on, do you think changing air filter, spark plugs and running fuel cleaner, making sure the car is hot, would help it pass?
Really Jose!You have a 2x4 hood prop!
premium would more likely make you fail so be warned on that step as. with higher grade if you car is not designed to burn it there will be more unburnt fuel going out the exhaust
Does the car computer recheck the catalytic system when you start car in AM?
Thanks for the post
thanks friend all your videos are very useful ....
+amjad amj np thanks for commenting.
Everything you said here ticked the list 👍👍👍that explained why I fail my test today...thanks for sharing.
MrSullione Ridiculous

Peter Bruzgis Maryland no longer uses dynos for emission rests. But they used to.
Peter Bruzgis - there's a NEW Hampshire?!?
CEL = Some Techs call it the Money Light ;)
N_ R cash escaping light 🚦 💷
300.00 in repairs and you will pass, if the CRL is on
My two wheeler is showing 4.67 ppm of CO and failed pollution test even its only one week i did its servicing plz tell what cud be the causes for this
