I think if ever there was really "one little trick THEY don't want you to know about" in singing it's semi-occluded vocal phonations, especially the straw

Forgive the ignorant questions, but are semi-occluded vocal tracts qualities that we want to cultivate, or train ourselves away from? Another question I have is: Marci stated that using a certain anesthesia mask would "create an occlusion"--in that case, is an occlusion different from a semi-occlusion? And thirdly, how do we know if our vocal tracts are occluded or semi occluded or not? Again, forgive me for asking very basic questions. Obviously I am new to the terminology...Thanks.
