I think another major factor the Mig-29 had against it was, the west was able to train specifically against it when the Germans used it as aggressors in the Red Flag exercises (It caught everyone by surprise the first time it was used) until 2002 (sold to Poland in 2003). NATO pilots were specifically trained on its strengths and weaknesses and knew what they had to do. Add the fact that most Mig-29 pilots in other countries don't have the flight hours the west had and it was a recipe for disaster.
Poland did guns only dogfights in their Mig-29 against the USAF F-35A at red flag and got mopped by F-35s "sticking to his ass like hot glue" according to a F-35 pilot
Based on the comments from some western Fighter Pilots when doing exercises against Indian Mig-29 Pilots the Mig is formidable but also the Indians are typically much better trained than a lot of the other countries that operate the mig-29
I heard the Indian MiG-21s are also pretty nasty. Allegedly they have some very interesting aftermarket electronics installed. Alas, there's nothing you can do to make an airframe newer, and theirs are showing strong signs of being worn out.

Yes, MiG's have one of the main features, and that is the height ceiling. For their time, they were inaccessible to any other aircraft or air-to-air missiles. The tradition continues, the MiG-31 has the highest ceiling among aircraft, the pilot even wears a spacesuit like an astronaut. The MiG-41 is generally planned with a hybrid engine, because there is almost no air where it plans to go, and conventional engines will not work. That's why I think the MiG-31 is so similar to the X-Wing🤣
I agree the Mig 29 simply hasn't been used by capable enough air forces in actual combat. I wonder if it's not a similar case to the T-72, which acquired a bad reputation for its export versions in hands of incompetent armies, but which has more recently demonstrated a fair degree of performance when in more capable hands.

Fulcrum's reputation was absolutely tanked by being exported so much, you see it happen to all sorts of vehicles that ended up in Iran's hands, they just shredded their stats down to dust. America is a lot more picky with who we give out our planes to, and we tend to make sure they're treated well. The MiG-29 is Russian too and the world loves crapping on Russian and Chinese technology. The flankers still have a good reputation because they aren't exported as haphazardly to anyone. A long time ago, American F-16A pilots struggled against the German MiG-29s during training at first, especially because the early F-16s lacked the HMD that the MiG-29s came with, once they got used to that and got used to the MiG-29 they ended up considering it a fairly balanced fight but scarier than what they were used to at the time.
