The ST-21 Program was looked into as a potential upgrade to the Tomcat to make it a 4.5gen fighter/interceptor. If you could find an accurate model of this proposed airframe on DCS I believe that you could generate a ton of interest in your content with it.

I used to work on the Tomcat back in the mid 90s, it wasn't really sunset because it was not a good airplane anymore, but it took a lot of man hours to keep it flying. There were times that I personally know that some of the methods that we used to keep some of them up were not "Standard Operating Procedures" LOL. Love your vids keep doing what you do
Everyone knows the F-14 was retired too soon. The only reason the F-14 was retired was because of politics and costs. If the Super Tomcat 21 was put in service with it's new price cutting technology in it's design and latest avionics and ordinance, it would practically be a Naval F-15X with thrust vectoring. There would be almost no need for another aircraft on the deck.
I don't find that outlandish at all. Maybe even in time it could sport a miniaturized directed energy weapon of some sort given the size of the bird. I would have love to see the ST-21
Once heard a Desert Storm f-14 pilot talk about how f-14's had rear facing jamming systems that would mess with 6 O'clock missiles, the pilots didn't what it did to do it's thing, they were just told to turn it on.

I liked how the control inputs can be seen. Gives an idea of how much input/authority is required to make flight movements. Yes, as a weapon system, retired too early for fleet defender, but Navy operations are hard on airframes. Logistics, maintenance and aircrew familiarization, all had a hand in the demise of the Tomcat. The F-14's sexyness remains.
Two things. One, axe heads. Two, what if you pushed him, instead of being defensive after ever launch. Put him defensive, let your missile get smoked but follow up. Never let off. Worth trying, even if you lose. I don’t think you would.
As someone that worked on F-14 avionics and loved the aircraft the maintenance on them was a constant affair in every area. Sadly I agree with their retirement though I think they could have served better asking allies and partner nations for a few extra years were it not for the Iran factor
@@benrichey2593 all aircraft require maintenance of course but some are far more time and resource intensive by entire factors. The F14 vs F18 was a drastic reduction increasing the cost to value significantly

I love the F-14 but its time was over. The naval bomber threat was gone and the F-14's ability to generate sorties was severely limited due to the outrageous maintenance requirements.

So I got to thinking about his missile shooting down the AIM-174B. Would a double tap be a nasty surprise? Launch one on the jamming signal, climb or drop 2k ft or so, then launch a second? I'd think that if the launches were spaced close enough in time, but with some distance spatially, he might only have the one missile in the air. By the time he realizes there were 2 missiles launched, it'd be too late. Just a thought.

I was in the Navy when the Tomcat was introduced to the Fleet. While at my AE "A" ( At mucus Tennis shoe.) school for the tomcat. Specifically, I always wondered why they did not take the seeker out of the high-speed anti-radiation missile and put it in the seeker of the tomcats Phoenix. Granted, I was only 17 and not an engineer, but back then I thought for sure it would have been able to lock on to an enemy aircraft radar and seek that way.
It's great to see that the F-14 is still relevant in certain situations. I would love to see someone model the Super Tomcat 21 and see what it is capable of.
An excellent example of where a loyal Wingman might send out a jamming signal that can be locked while the Fox 3 is being launched using electro optical.
I feel like every tomcat video missed the F-14s greatest trick that funny projection under the F-14S nose is a camera with a huge telephoto lense supposed to allow you to fire a Phoenix without using the radar
Updating the missles on an older aircraft to me is like putting winter tires on a car when it’s cold. Makes a world of difference when you don’t think it should.
The F14 had over 14,000 moving parts. At the time it was the most complicated aircraft that we had. Swap out the engines, build a newer airframe, and update technology. Then we will have "Maverick Top Gun" IV,- XV.
If they had in fact remanufactured the youngest A's & B's along with the full run of new D's, it would not be difficult to fathom that they would have potentially gone forward with the Tomcat 21. Like another commenter said, it would be a new build like the F-15EX. Who knows what kind of engineering changes they would have made to make the wing box and screw jack mechanism simpler and stronger. New engines, all new avionics and the works ... It would have def been a natural choice for the 147 and stayed relevant for a long time still.

That's wild because the engines used in both are basically the same, they're interchangeable to a degree along with the F-16's single engine, just need to put on different outer bits to mount it into the engine bay and away she goes.
@@dumdumbinks274 Yea it's possible the early F-14 engines were louder than the later P&W F100 and the modernized variants like the -229 that you can get now, which are significantly more efficient and thus can produce the same amount of power at a lower output, which would make the aircraft potentially sound quieter at similar absolute thrust values. Spin that engine up to max throttle and kick in the afterburner though, and I'm sure it'll scream all the same
a suggestion. Build a scenario with F-35B/C (with limited AMRAMs) out front with F/A-18F with AIM 174Bs agaisnt a variety of PLA aircraft. Give the USN forces an E-3D Hawkeye and see if the Lightnigh II can 'see and pass' target info to the E3D and then to the Super Hornet to see if that set up is able to defeat the PLA AF.
I'd be interested to see the fight with the other guy just blinking the jammer if you get a lock. Not just leaving it on, kinda defeating his own stealth.
I live by a National Guard base that performs air shows every 4th of July but I don't ever recall seeing the F-14 in the skies I must have missed out I've seen the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds plenty of warthogs / A-10s they used to call Fort Custer their home. What an experience it must have been to watch The f-14s Fly❤

Super Hornet was chosen over Super Tomcat 21 not because of capability or even cost, but because Boeing lied to Congress about the degree of commonality with the legacy Hornet, characterizing it (inaccurately) as a low-risk solution and overstating its capabilities. Legacy Tomcat cost a bunch to maintain, but with new systems and avionics, we'd have seen the same kind of improvements as with Advanced Eagle. That plus the cancellation of A-12 cost the Navy a tremendous amount of capability.
Absolutely I would certainly hope that I think it's McDonald Douglas that built the F 14 that would bring out a type 14 modernized Also yeah like that missle fight ideal!!!
Stand off missiles make the difference, probably a big reason the F-15EX is being ordered since it is essentially a missile truck. Shame the Navy doesn't have the big interceptor that the F-14 was anymore.
I'd LOVE to see the fa-18 super hornet try this too, and the tomcat vs the world with this missile, vs f35s, j20s, f22 etc. I've a feeling the hornet wont preform like the tomcat- but will still be formidable.
Then, why are people making 5th gen aircraft. It's means they are fool to listen to that movie name. Which is not even real at all. Also, SU57 is not a joke. It's worse than you think. It can even challenge an F22 raptor in BVR. Do you even forget about the part or what?

I think a very big reason the Navy retired the tomcat was the exponentially increasing cost of maintenance due to aging.
True that, it was an aircraft with a lot of hydraulically operated avionics which is a nightmare to keep in the air.
It was also a complicated aircraft with low serviceability. Relatively low production numbers, not really multi role etc.

I loved the Tomcat we deployed with 103 Jolly Roger’s in 03. They had the 110 upgrades. Badass

The felon's RWR would see the lock from both missiles, though. He could bulldog an R-77 and then defend the other missile. It wouldn't be a surprise.

a suggestion. Build a scenario with F-35B/C (with limited AMRAMs) out front with F/A-18F with AIM 174Bs agaisnt a variety of PLA aircraft. Give the USN forces an E-3D Hawkeye and see if the Lightnigh II can 'see and pass' target info to the E3D and then to the Super Hornet to see if that set up is able to defeat the PLA AF.

9:34 to 9:35 you can see an explosion at a distance. Probably intercepted again.
I live by a National Guard base that performs air shows every 4th of July but I don't ever recall seeing the F-14 in the skies I must have missed out I've seen the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds plenty of warthogs / A-10s they used to call Fort Custer their home. What an experience it must have been to watch The f-14s Fly❤

Super Hornet was chosen over Super Tomcat 21 not because of capability or even cost, but because Boeing lied to Congress about the degree of commonality with the legacy Hornet, characterizing it (inaccurately) as a low-risk solution and overstating its capabilities. Legacy Tomcat cost a bunch to maintain, but with new systems and avionics, we'd have seen the same kind of improvements as with Advanced Eagle. That plus the cancellation of A-12 cost the Navy a tremendous amount of capability.
A-12 agreed but that was inevitable. But ST-21 would have been more of a maintenance hog than a Superhornet no question.

Stand off missiles make the difference, probably a big reason the F-15EX is being ordered since it is essentially a missile truck. Shame the Navy doesn't have the big interceptor that the F-14 was anymore.

I'd LOVE to see the fa-18 super hornet try this too, and the tomcat vs the world with this missile, vs f35s, j20s, f22 etc. I've a feeling the hornet wont preform like the tomcat- but will still be formidable.
