I really appreciate your expertise on HDR settings and often wait for your videos before starting a new HDR game - they’ve been incredibly helpful! That said, I have a slightly different take on your suggestion to set paper white to 200 or above in RDR2. I find that keeping it at 100, or even 80, provides a natural and immersive HDR experience, especially in a light-controlled environment like mine. It also minimizes overly bright HUD elements, reducing burn-in risks on OLED screens. At 9:17 I would argue that the left image looks more natural and nuanced than the right one. HDR is essentially the fixed version with the Patch releases while Cinematic is what was available at launch. Hence why there are (legitimate) claims that the HDR implementation is lackluster (and it doesn't leverage HGIG)
I think the reasons people say HDR is broken is either they remember the game from launch or they haven't switched over to the game HDR option, and that in HDR colours are less saturated and washed out compared to the SDR grading.

Been enjoying this masterpiece again recently. Switching from the PS4 pro version running on PS5 (still amazing) to the One X version running on Series X, the difference between chequerboard 4K and native 4K is pretty substantial. Also using the motion smoothing on the C1 makes the game look like 60fps with little artefacts thanks to how good the LG handles motion. Until we get a proper 60fps patch on console at least. Due to the nature of the game, the slight increase in input lag isn’t too much of a concern.

I think there is a misunderstanding in the term "specular highlight". It isn't just the brightest object of the image, to be called specular it needs to be a highlight that is reflected in some ways. For an example a tiny white reflection dot onto a round shiny surface (like a pool ball or a glass lamp) that's a specular highlight. If you look at a bright white sky out of a window or a bright fire spot of a lamp, well, it is just the light source, it's direct light. If it's not reflected than it's not specular, it's just a highlight :) hoping to help, even with my imperfect english
Okay, this is interesting. I have a LG C1 and I have my peak brightness set to 1000 nits and paper white to 80. I will try 200-300 instead and see what I like. Edit: 800 nits and 250 paper white was the sweet spot for me.
Back then when the game launched I've been saying this, there's not much to show in HDR, but people are to used to their instagram filters and have an unrealistic expectation of color, wanting vivid poppy colors everywhere. I believe the same is true for black levels, remember, there's only one true black, is called vanta black, a special paint that absorbs 99% of light, the other situation where you would see true black is if you are in a completely dark room with no light penetration.
True, but in case of elevated black floor issues it looks like the image is not even showing darkness properly but more like a shade of pencil grey, not just above black like it should. There is a whole range of between true black and pencil grey unused and makes dark nightime scenes look just foggy or smokey, not true darkness where your eyes can make out the details just barely.
Playing ps4 disk on a ps5. Have a 55" Bravia x750h and a 48" LG C2. Turning hdr off on the console screen settings gives me better looking colors and brightness without looking "washed."
The HDR option in RDR2 is a huge pain in the butt. However after changing it a hundred times and then a setting on my TV I have found that sweet spot. It does look fantastic. Just finished my 3rd playthrough. Was my favorite playthrough and achieved 100% for the first time on any game in my life.
Hello i hope you to be fine and healthy i am a big fun of rdr2 so i played this game more then 500 hour so for the hdr i recommend this setting Paper white to max, peak brightness to whatever makes the icon disappear, reduce the tv brightness till the paper white icon becomes barely visible ... it looks absolute glorious maybe you can try this setting and let me know the result
HDR seems to do something to the contrast in this game. The nights are far too bright with HDR turned on. Even the mini map turns this weird pale color with hdr.
Paperwhite makes logo disappear at 300 on PC, on ps5 it's still very visible at 80. Hdr looks incredible on PC, deep blacks and bright highlights. On ps5 it looks really bad, unsurprisingly so since correct brightness cannot be set. That's the case for me at least. Rdr on ps is the only game I've come across that doesn't let you crush dark tones by incorrect calibration, it's just not possible. They must use entirely different containers for the tonemapping on console vs pc
@@MrMacymace dead eye gets a bit bright, eagle eye is good though. I noticed that hdr on console is a matter of black level setting (or brightness as it's often called on many TVs) If I lower the slider on the TV about 20-25%, depending on in-game paper white setting, it just gets the hdr functionality to where you'd expect it to be. Dunno, seems like they just put the whole hdr container in the wrong blacklevel space. Adjusting black level makes the game look perfect on console A bit fiddly to get it right and don't crush dark shades, but still better than leave it as is
I was confused when people said there were no blacks and it was all raised? I remember seeing perfect black in areas, especially in forests where the moon doesn't get through a lot of the trees. I think RDR2 looked great in HDR game mode when set up correctly on my AW3423DW, seriously the sunset and sunrise looked stunning, running around saint denis looked great as well. Most raised blacks are because of the light bouncing around the scene.
@@GhosT396 My comment says what monitor I am using. Also what mode I am using which HDR on game mode set at 1000 nits as that is what the game wants as that is what my monitor caps at
The game has a lot of light bounce on ultra settings to it can make it look like a raised black level but in fact the moonlight and other light sources bounce around the scene giving the image a natural look. Go to a forest under the trees with no light sources and you'll see nothing haha.
Super bizarre thing to say an LG CX is required, older oled will do mostly a fine job of tone mapping the highlights down and you'll still benefit from 10 bit color and better peak brightness. Hell, most mini LED displays will do well here too, I'm watching your video on a Neo G7 and it looks spectacular. Also, even the LG CX only hits it's maximum peak brightness in a 1 percent window so most of the time it's being tone mapped.
Fantastic video. I play on PC, and love the way the HDR looks, but I'm not sure exactly what it's doing. I launch with HDR turned on in Windows and keep the game at Windowed Borderless. When I adjust the in-game HDR calibration, nothing seems to be changing. But the colors and contrasts are nice and bold during play. Is this Window's Auto-HDR at work?
Hey Marcus, thanks for your great video. I have an s95c and I'm just wondering why you set the HDR peak brightness to 2000 nits when the Rockstar logo disappears around 1,300 nits? As far as I know, the TV is only capable of around 1,300 nits as well.
I find if my blacks are washed out, I just turn my TV brightness down. This TCL I have can display like jet black blacks. A huge part of it is messing around with your TV’s HDR settings as well.
Yeah, that's exactly what I notice. Not sure why everyone here is praising HDR like it's better on all fronts when the color looks muted compared to SDR.
Been arguing with a lot of people who calls out RDR2 HDR broken. After they updated the game with proper HDR model instead of the "cinema" they rebranded that just raises the brightness it was awesome. Never used SDR in that game afterwards.
@@sermerlin1 exactly bro. clearly people never watched an old western before , they’re bright , dusty and everything has that sun bleached look. like the trees in the game look colorful and how it should , idk what else they want to see popping with color though.
Overall I find the game looks best without HDR. At least after this video I know why, it's the colors that do it. Loosing the colors as much as I do with my display is just not worth it, not even close.
Id consider them not utilising the HDR colour space (much) to not really be HDR then though... If the reason for having a high enough range of brightness is to be able to show that wide array of colours, like how people complain about 400HDR standard as being not bright enough even if the content does fully utilise BT2020 Did you see that tv linus reviewed from china... If that thing can just smash out that full brightness on Rec709 and everyone thinks it looks amazing and were even surprised the content wasnt HDR surely if a tv can do that but imagine it only supported Rec709 as the input... Would it matter at that point assuming the HDR content in question doesnt use much BT2020
could you check out the HDR settings on Honkai Star rail? it's a popular free to play game like Genshin Impact and it recently got updated to support HDR

Just a precision : VRR is not available for PS4 games on PS5
I just saw that. Tried to use FTDA on PS5 but it doesn't make a difference.
HDR on RDR2 for PC was just recently updated not too long ago. I think around the time they implemented DLSS. It’s all a testing ground for GTAVI.
Thank you for your work!
Great video! Thanks👍👍
Nice work as always, sir. 👏🏻
Brilliant video mate cheers
Playing ps4 disk on a ps5. Have a 55" Bravia x750h and a 48" LG C2. Turning hdr off on the console screen settings gives me better looking colors and brightness without looking "washed."
Great video! Could you take a look on Final Fantasy 16? The latest patch has changed the HDR
What’s your settings bro
Excellent. Thanks a lot!
I noticed that hdr on console is a matter of black level setting (or brightness as it's often called on many TVs)
If I lower the slider on the TV about 20-25%, depending on in-game paper white setting, it just gets the hdr functionality to where you'd expect it to be.
Dunno, seems like they just put the whole hdr container in the wrong blacklevel space.
Adjusting black level makes the game look perfect on console
A bit fiddly to get it right and don't crush dark shades, but still better than leave it as is
Native 4K on SX looks amazing even at 30 FPS I'm playing on pc now for higher FPS hopefully we get a console patch next year 🤞
I was confused when people said there were no blacks and it was all raised? I remember seeing perfect black in areas, especially in forests where the moon doesn't get through a lot of the trees. I think RDR2 looked great in HDR game mode when set up correctly on my AW3423DW, seriously the sunset and sunrise looked stunning, running around saint denis looked great as well. Most raised blacks are because of the light bouncing around the scene.
Hey, could you share what hdr settings you use on rdr2 with that monitor?
@@GhosT396 My comment says what monitor I am using. Also what mode I am using which HDR on game mode set at 1000 nits as that is what the game wants as that is what my monitor caps at
@@lilpain1997 Thanks, what paper white setting do you use?
you are the best! are you planning another video settings update video for lg cx ect?
The correct HDR settings for RDR2 is OFF
No it's not
It's such a waste that they are not using HDR color space :(
The game has a lot of light bounce on ultra settings to it can make it look like a raised black level but in fact the moonlight and other light sources bounce around the scene giving the image a natural look.
Go to a forest under the trees with no light sources and you'll see nothing haha.
Yes , I found this effect really good
Super bizarre thing to say an LG CX is required, older oled will do mostly a fine job of tone mapping the highlights down and you'll still benefit from 10 bit color and better peak brightness. Hell, most mini LED displays will do well here too, I'm watching your video on a Neo G7 and it looks spectacular. Also, even the LG CX only hits it's maximum peak brightness in a 1 percent window so most of the time it's being tone mapped.
I said the minimum is a CX not that this TV us required. Any screen with similar specs as the CX is the bare minimum for me to use HDR
Arthur Morgan is a legend
Thanks!
Yea we need ps5 update and i wish HDR was good on this game the green forest and grass will look amazing with HDR
Hey man
Love your work but a question off this topic do you use game console input or pc input for your ps5?
I can't even find the setting for HDR.
I FIGURED IT OUT> you must be in full screen mode to access HDR
Hey Marcus, thanks for your great video. I have an s95c and I'm just wondering why you set the HDR peak brightness to 2000 nits when the Rockstar logo disappears around 1,300 nits? As far as I know, the TV is only capable of around 1,300 nits as well.
This video needs to be redone with HDR10+ update being released on PC!
Should have won game of the decade
I find if my blacks are washed out, I just turn my TV brightness down. This TCL I have can display like jet black blacks. A huge part of it is messing around with your TV’s HDR settings as well.
It looks washed out in HDR.
The colors pop more in sdr.
yeah right 😂
I just retested on my CX. I Agree. The color does wash out in HDR
Yeah, that's exactly what I notice. Not sure why everyone here is praising HDR like it's better on all fronts when the color looks muted compared to SDR.
If you're down to mod the game on PC, try the Visual Redemption mod from Razed Mods. Much less washed out looking
@@brainycabde what tv do you have ? HDR is almost always way better than SDR
That paper white window is huge
Great video, what are the recommended HDR settings for a Samsung S95C please?
Been arguing with a lot of people who calls out RDR2 HDR broken. After they updated the game with proper HDR model instead of the "cinema" they rebranded that just raises the brightness it was awesome. Never used SDR in that game afterwards.
i never got why people said the HDR was horrible either. some people must have pretty crappy tvs 😂
@@Hypno_BPM maybe they expected avatar colors out of a wild west centered game 😂
What would you recommend for Sony brand tvs like X90K or X90L for the HDR settings?
After two hours of trying, I was unable to get HDR working well on the Samsung G8 OLED. Fortunately, the game looks good in SDR mode.
Nice video
Shame that it took Rockstar 5 years to properly implement HDR
Plz have a seperate playlist for hdr gaming content.
Please give Arthur some food and put on his hat :'(
I was also very exhausted from all the testing 🤣
The hdr at release was very washed out and poor when when I finished my play through a few weeks ago I had zero issues with hdr it was quite stunning
Id consider them not utilising the HDR colour space (much) to not really be HDR then though... If the reason for having a high enough range of brightness is to be able to show that wide array of colours, like how people complain about 400HDR standard as being not bright enough even if the content does fully utilise BT2020
Did you see that tv linus reviewed from china...
Les réglages pour la PS4 Pro sont-ils les mêmes que pour la PS5 ? Sachant que j’ai un téléviseur OLED LG 55CX.
MERCI POUR VOTRE RÉPONSE.
when we talk about the peak brighness, do we talk about the 10% window or 100% window peak brighness ?
10%
Hi! With the new update that introduced HDR10+ Gaming changes something about the analysis made in this video?
Can you do a new 120hz setup video for LG CX😊
This game looks better on my pc at 2560x1440p then it does on console at 4K lmao
I’m guessing you’re using ps5 version? Which is 4k checkboard resolution, looks bad
I saw in your previous video you recommended 1600 PB and 180-220 PW for the Samsung QN90A. Is it still the case? If not, what settings would you recommend? Also, my gamma settings are set on ST.2084 and +3 (maximum value). Would you recommend leaving it this way or lowering it?
Hello, your videos are excellent!
I wonder if you could help me?
I have a PS5 and an LG OLED EVO C3 TV and I want to upload videos to UA-cam with the Elgato 4k60s+ capturer in the best possible quality, but it gives me problems with HDMI 2.0 such as washed out colors or HDR not detected. Any idea how to configure this?
Thank you
Just I am going to start this game. New Pc and now new LG C3 42". Thank you.
I don't understood when I should use FTDA -4 setting. Only if the room lightning is very very dark? I play with dim room with slight accompanying light.
