    If I have the Deity D3 Pro connected directly to the camera, will it turn off when I turn the camera off, and then turn on when I turn the camera back on? (without me pushing any buttons?)

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  2 роки тому +1

      Mmmm, sort of. You still have to turn it on at the start of the day and it will go into something of a sleep mode until you turn your camera back on. But the battery will run down if you leave it in the on position all the time.

    Hi there!
    I currenty own a really cheap Movo VXR10 and I got some problems with it. The microphone is so loud from itself, that I can't lower the volume down in my camera and it still clips if I am in the car (for ex.). I've been looking into new microphones and I really don't know what to do.
    This one does not have a negative DB dial, does it? Is it much louder then the Video mic pro+? That one does have a -10 db. The internal sound of the Sony6500 is terrible.
    What should I do? Go for the Deity or Video mic pro+.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому

      Hi Wess Media, I found both the D3 Pro and RODE VideoMic Pro+ to work well with the Panasonic GH5 which also has a very hot mic input. So there is enough room to reduce the output volume for both of these to work. I just don't know about the Sony a6500.

    • @SjoerdWess
      @SjoerdWess 5 років тому

      Curtis Judd thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I'm really curious if the video micro and the deity have the same db output on the lowest possible setting. Would you know that by chance?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому

      The RODE can go to -10dB (assuming that means -10dB from its unity gain setting). The D3 Pro's has a sensitivity spec of -24dB~-44dB re1V/Pa. So this isn't an apples to apples comparison, but both work nicely with the GH5 in my tests.

    Hey Chris, awesome stuff. What's the best recommended on OR off camera recorder to get good, clean sound at LIVE concert events that's compact, effective and still affordable? I use the Song a7iii camera and as expected, even at the lowest audio setting, on board audio can be overblown. I would also like to use this mic for vlogging (at home and on the road) if one does exist. Or would I need to get an on camera mic (Rode, Deity) and a field recorder such as Zoom H5?

    I'm an owner of the Aputure V-Mic D2, which I can only assume this mic is the successor to. I'm a big fan value wise of the D2 and am wondering how much of an improvement this mic will offer. Hey Curtis. I came back to watch this because I am in the market for a camera mount mic. The thing that had me interested in the Rode Video Mic Pro Plus, is the auto on/off. What about this mic, does it have the auto on/off feature?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому +1

      Hi Jay, good to hear from you! It sort of does, but you must first put it in standby mode. It’ll stay in that mode for 15 minutes and if it doesn’t detect your camera recorder on in that time, it shuts off completely.
      What I have noticed with the RODE VMP+ is that it is basically always in standby mode which is cool but if you don’t use it for a few days, it runs the battery out. So it is a trade-off.

      Yes, Rycote charges higher prices I suspect for at least 2 reasons: 1) They do the R&D to make these designs which work really well and 2) they're based in the UK where employees are not cheap. But I can say that their gear is top notch in terms of performance and durability over time.

    Im looking at a D3 Pro as budget choice for upgrading from Rode video micro. I do use the Rode wireless go 2 running the sound directly to the mic input in an Atem Mini Pro. My question, will the Deity D3 Pro work well with the Rode wireless or should I spend the extra 100-ish dollars for a Rode video mic pro+? Im using the mic on a table top tripod 20 inches out of frame in front of me - I want to push back about 12 more inches but still have decent audio.

    Hi Curtis, thanks for another excellent review. Really appreciate your considered in-depth assessments with a clear one screen summary up front. You are my goto audio kit reviewer and I subscribed 3 weeks ago. I now find myself 'binge viewing' your channel to learn more. As a photographer on a convergence journey to video, I'm a video novice who's sound knowledge and practice are a weakness - so your insights are valued. Just took delivery of this Deity V3 Pro as my first step towards decent sound in video. Maybe I will gravitate towards off-camera sound recording, into something like a SD Mix-3, with timecode sync in post.... but know I must 'learn to walk my Deity, before trying to run' with greater complexity (and cost). Anyway...top reviews.

    My wife went onto my UA-cam account on the Nvidia Shield and said, "let me pick a video I think you'll like." After 30 seconds or so, she clicked on this video. She was right! 😂
    Quick question, do you think -12dB and level 4 on the D3 Pro is the optimal setting on the GH5? The reason I ask is that I found the levels to be a lot lower on my Tascam DR70D when using the D3 Pro compared to the S-Mic 2. I didn't want to loudness normalize and find myself boosting the noise floor, so I opted to turn the D3 Pro to the 10 setting. It still wasn't clipping on the Tascam and still lower in volume to the S-Mic 2. Just trying to figure out the optimal settings.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому +1

      Hi Joe! Too funny! The setting at 4 worked well for the GH5 into it's 3.5mm mic input. I believe that when you are using the mic with the 3.5mm to XLR adapter into an XLR input, you'll want to set the gain dial to 0 and let the recorder/preamp do the amplification work. On my DR-60DmkII, I set the gain dial to 0 on the D3 Pro, then set the gain for input channel one to mid and the trim dial near max to get the peaks hitting around -12dB. I like to leave about that much headroom on consumer level recorders like the Tascam in case things get a little loud. How does that work on your end?

    As always, a thoughtful review. I would however like to hear it used as an on-camera mic instead of a close boom, since that's what it's designed to do. I worry about the short interference tube not dealing with longer distances well while still delivering some comb filtering indoors, and an on-camera test would give a little more insight into that.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  6 років тому +1

      Hi Colin, thanks. The samples were recorded on camera (GH5) at approximately 3 feet. You will note more "room" sound in those recordings vs. the rest of the talking head clips where it is boomed over my head. The Deity does ever so slightly better than the RODE in terms of "dealing with longer distances" because of its slightly more focused polar pattern, but once you get beyond about 3 feet, you'll pick up a fair bit more room or location sound.

    Hi Curtis! Is there an elegant solution to use this on the Blackmagic Pocket 4K seeing as the camera doesn't provide plug-in power? Is there a 3.5mm to mini-XLR cable that can convert phantom to 3V ‘Plug-in Power’? I've just purchased it and would sometimes like to have it on the camera.
    I've got the 3.5mm to XLR adapter from Deity but then I'd be using 3 parts (3.5mm cable + adapter + XLR to mini-XLR cable)

      Hi Diego, the mic does not need plugin power as it supplies its own power. The problem with the P4K is the way it is wired which is completely unique. You may need a TRS cable to trick it. But contact DEITY support for details.

    Hello Curtis, i have been looking at these comparisons for awhile and there are 2 things that bother me about the de3.
    First and the most important is the battery. This seems to be a mic which will only last maybe 3 years and then it becomes thrash, or it will resell for little, like a smartphone.
    Second is reliability, i have seen some users comment about receiveing products with poor or damaged batteries.
    The only thing i dislike about the rode is the location of the 3.5mm cable.
    Right now if you shop you can find lightly used Rode pro+ at 200$.
    Which are your thoughts about this?

    • @curtisjudd

      I don’t use on-camera mics much so I haven’t stressed the battery over time but I follow your reasoning. In regard to batteries, it seems like the VMP+ draws on its battery constantly, even in standby so you have to recharge every 3 days or so, whether you use the mic or not. So there are trade offs on both.

    Hey Curtis,
    I keep coming back to this video because I'm planning on shooting my second short film in the next few weeks. It has a lot more dialogue so the cheap lav mic with Zoom H1 solution isn't gonna cut it anymore.
    I was first planning to just rent a Sennheiser MKH 416 with a full audio kit just to be save but now I'm not so sure anymore. Just simply buying something like the Deity D3 Pro with the location kit could save me a lot of hassle and money in the long run but I'm just not sure if the audio is gonna be good enough. I know I will also need something like the Rode blimp for wind protection as well. That would fit without problems, right? Would you say this would be an acceptable option for booming dialogue, maybe even combined with a Zoom H1 still? It would save me sooo much money but I also want the sound to be good...

Just be aware that these things happen, and I'm not sure how much quality control happens in the background, but I'm giving this company a try. I've already bought the VLAV, S Mic 2 and the D3 Pro. The replacement they sent holds a charge but I have not yet tested its longevity, but good on Deity for immediately replacing it with a new mic. Thanks for all you do, Curtis. I am primarily a still shooter, but like most shooters I have had to start doing more video. I have a client with a large West Coast style open office, complete with 30' ceilings, lots of glass, concrete floors, and white noise generators. I need to do a series of talking head videos in their space which presents obvious issues from the audio front.
    I will do what I can to bring moving blankets in, but I have a mic question. I have a Joly modified Oktava 012 hypercardioid which I use as my primary boom mic (thanks for that review BTW), along with a Rycote BBG, as well as a decent wired lav and a couple Samson cardioid mics (for backup). I plan to pick up a Fethead Phantom to help push to my Zoom H5, but my question is this... Should I consider a D3 Pro or another "true" shotgun mic for this particular boom application? I know that shotguns are really meant for outdoor applications, but these wide open spaces and sound reflections worry me. I will need to feature a decent amount of the office environment when framing, so getting in closer than 12"-18" is a non-starter.

      Hi Scott, no, a shotgun can run into phase issues via its interference tube when in reverberant spaces and the mic is slightly off axis of the talent. In this case, I’d rely on the lav mic and look to boom from under the frame with the Oktava. Wide interviews are a challenge and I usually end up using a Lav.

Thanks for considering offering an opinion on this. Hi Howard, The D3 Pro is good, but for some situations, I'd feel a lot better having the superior RF rejection capabilities of the S-Mic 2 and especially the MKH416 (which uses an RF bias design). If you're going to pare down to fewer microphones, I'd spend a little more and get one of the higher end mics which does better with RF. Our world is only getting more noisy in terms of RF. Its a bummer when you lose a take to interference.

    Dear Curtis.
    First off I have to say I love your videos and I learned a lot from them. With this out of the way I have a question or better two for you.
    So I am studying technical journalism and at first was focusing more on pr and writing but know I fell in love with shooting video and coming from a photographics point off view I had no idea how to get good sound. So for my projects for university I used their equipment. Which consisted of a rode ntg 2 with a tascam dr100 and a wireless lavalier setup from sennheiser. Last November I bought a "used" XT 3 which replaced my xt1 and filmed a bit with the new camera. Now that I start to look for my own audio equipment I am not sure what to get.
    I shoot lots interviews so like I said i am mostly familiar with shotgun and lavalier mics.
    After searching a bit I found the deity d3 pro and I like it from the hearing tests. But i am not sure what to get.
    So would u rather go for:
    A Deity D3 Pro with a zoom h1 or a zoom h4n or a tascam dr 60 or would u look for a completly different setup (I dont like wireless solutions that much)
    Or go with a Rode NTG 2 with the recorders above.
    And in addition to that what lav would u get (since money is an issue i would use it with a zoom h1 as a on body recorder or if i can get a cheep used one a zoom f1 but i doubt it)
    Thanks for your help in advance. And keep up with the excellent work.
    Thankfully Matthias

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  5 років тому

      Hi Matthias, I think the D3 Pro and an H1 would be a good combination. But if you also need to record a lavalier, an H4n Pro might be a better choice as you could record both - the D3 Pro into one of the XLR inputs and the lavalier into the 3.5mm input. I'd usually recommend the Tascam for its XLR inputs but its 3.5mm input is not that great - quite a bit of self-noise. I would NOT recommend the NTG2 and H4n. They don't work well together. Best wishes!

    • @matthiasschulz1509
      @matthiasschulz1509 5 років тому

      @@curtisjudd Thank you for the quick answer.
      This was my fault with the first question I ment the H4n pro not the older H4n; saw your video ua-cam.com/video/PRd-nZGGSv4/v-deo.html in which you were mentioning it with the NTG 2.
      Now since price is a matter and I maybe useing the lav with a recorder as a free on body solution I tend to shift to a setup with a H1 and a lav (which i can also use with a D3 pro in case I need a small solution).
      But now I have a follow up question: So would you rather use a longer cable for the lavalier and tie the talent to the Shotgun mic or leave him the freedom. In the later case i would maybe opt for a combination of a H1 with a lavalier and a Tascam dr 60 with the deity or the Rode NTG 2, just because from a handling perspective I like the Tascam more (but is there a huge different in sound using the Tascam for one mic and the Zoom for another?)
      So i guess i definitivly get a H1 (not the H1n event tough i like the features the not lockable dial is just a problem when using it on a talent; and the F1 and DR10 are just to expensive for me at the moment). And dependent on the mic I will maybe get an aditional recorder.
      Best wishes!

    • @curtisjudd

      @@ekko808 I did years ago. My take is this: Test your equipment. If it sounds good, it is good. So go with it. Trust your ears and get out there and make some great videos. Here's the video from years ago if you think it would be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/2oZp_k7AmXs/v-deo.html

    New to the channel. I found this very helpful. I am interested in purchasing a microphone for recording wildlife, primarily bird song. What do you think would work best for subjects that would likely be greater than 6’ away?

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd  2 роки тому +1

      That depends on whether you want a microphone to capture a wide stereo ambience sort of sound or want something more isolating that captures mainly the sound at which you aim the mic. A longer shotgun mic will be more isolating. A stereo pair of cardioid microphones will capture better wide ambient sounds.

    FYI. The Deity D3 Pro is nearly half off on Amazon. Really sweet deal.

    So for just twenty bucks i can opt for this instead of the vidmic pro (not the plus) for my G85. I do plan on enrolling in your audio course for my Christmas shopping.

    Hi - My Deity D-3 Pro sat idle for over a year. When I tried to charge it, the battery failed to supply power, basically bricked. Deity will not cover it as it was bought at a non authorized dealer. Is there anyway to replace the Li-ion internal battery? I can only use it currently if I hard wire the mic with USB-C and AC adapter. Looks like I may have to purchase another one?

      @@curtisjudd thanks Curtis - I think the base one would be right for me plus a boom pole adaptor of some sort. I see there is a location kit but it has a XLR adaptor that I wouldn't use.

      @@markshirley01 Hi Mark, the D3 base model comes with a shock mount with a cold shoe. I'm not sure, but it might have a 3/8" tap on the bottom (the D3 Pro version does) so that will work with a boom pole, but cannot be adjusted like a proper pole shock mount like those from Rycote. You could just buy a Rycote shock mount like this, though they're not super inexpensive: bhpho.to/2rCXswC

    Hi Curtis. Very impressive assessment as usual. Could you inform me about its sound quality compared with Rode VideoMic Pro+ in term of several aspects like: bass, treble, clarity, sibilance, etc? Which one is better? Thank you!

      Hi Nata, I believe the D3 Pro may have been discontinued so keep that in mind. I think I preferred the sound of the RODE VMP+ right out of the camera, but both of them are reasonably balanced for this class of microphone.
