Madvillainy is the sole studio album by American hip hop duo Madvillain, comprising MC MF Doom and producer Madlib. It was released on March 23, 2004 on Stones Throw Records.
The album was recorded between 2002 and 2004. Madlib created most of the instrumentals during a trip to Brazil in his hotel room using minimal amounts of equipment: a Boss SP-303 sampler, a turntable, and a tape deck. Fourteen months before the album was released, an unfinished demo version was stolen and leaked onto the internet. Frustrated, the duo stopped working on the album and returned to it only after they had released other solo projects.
While Madvillainy achieved only moderate commercial success, it became one of the best-selling Stones Throw albums. It peaked at number 179 on the US Billboard 200, and attracted attention from media outlets not usually covering hip hop music, including The New Yorker. Madvillainy received widespread critical acclaim for Madlib's production and MF Doom's lyricism, and is regarded as Doom's magnum opus. It has ranked in various publications' lists of all-time greatest albums, including at 411 on NME's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and at 365 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Doom and Madlib started working on Madvillainy in 2002. Madlib created one hundred beats in a matter of weeks, some of which were used on Madvillainy, some were used on his collaboration album with J Dilla Champion Sound, while others were used for M.E.D.'s and Dudley Perkins' albums. Even though Stones Throw booked Doom a hotel room, he spent most of the time in Madlib's studio, based in an old bomb shelter in Mount Washington, Los Angeles. When the duo wasn't working on the album, they were spending free time together, drinking beer, eating Thai food, and taking mushrooms. "Figaro" and "Meat Grinder" were among the songs recorded during this time.

Its the saddest thing to know as you go through his discography that you're actually going to be pulling from a finite resource, but take solace in the successors of Doom's legacy.

Absolutely love the use of “Can i watch?”as the background music for this! IMO one of DOOMs most underrated tracks. It has such a nice soothing beat and I love the storytelling in it. Great video
I’ve always thought this! It was the song that introduced me to MF DOOM’s style, opening the gate to understanding the enjoyment of his music; unique, dense and witty bars flowing perfectly over a butter smooth beat

I've known of him for years, but since his death I've listened to almost nothing but DOOM. I've come to realise that he is, in my opinion, the greatest to ever do it in hip hop. The unbelieveble production of unique but catchy, skippy beats; the rough voice and obviously the raw lyricism and flow. There are very few 'weak' doom tracks. The guy's thought process just seems to be on another level, a mad genius if you will.

This line used to be "nine, eleven". But when DOOM was writing songs for Madvillainy in the end 2000 somewhere along the lines it got leaked to the internet (go listen, it sounds like cool alternative versiosn of the song). After it leaked DOOM got some criticism on the leaks so he went back to perfect it. But in between the album leaking and the real album releasing 9/11 happened.
So he changed it to ten eleven.

Am i the only one that is weirded out over how it seems that DOOM was underappreciated as a producer? I feel like part of that is due to the insane hype thats attached to the album Madvillany, over other of his albums that he produced himself. His production aesthetic was really up my alley and i'm a bit sad that his musical abilites is not highlighted in most of the tributes/discussions given to him that i have seen. I don't know, maybe its just me..

I started my fandom of DOOM liking his rhyme-scheme and flow as well as his monotone voice. I thought his songs were mostly nonsense though. It took years to realize its just that his slang is on another level and his songs tell multiple stories at once. Mostly everything has a meaning and its just incredible what he was able to do. I think he is the best to ever do it. His diction is one of the most vast of all rappers in history but unlike nearly anyone he also has character while doing it and its natural. He doesn't throw in wild concepts just to seem intelligent. IDK man his flow is just a trip. Truly a genius

I can't even pick a favorite DOOM album much less a favorite song. Operation: Doomsday & Vaudeville Villain are pieces of human treasure, Mm...Food? Is what I use to introduce friends to DOOM, and Take Me To Your Leader is perfect study music (especially Next Levels),. Madvillainy always starts too slow for me but always wins me over by the time I reach the end . And Born Like This is criminally underrated. RIP DOOM, forever my favorite MC

Agree with you on the lyricism and the jazz like musicality of DOOM's lyricism and flow.
I don't know if you're interpretation of the scenario is totally on though.
DOOM opens by describing himself listening to good music and fresh off work. He might be in a club or on the street when he spots China and I agree, she's trouble. He has some drinks with her and I also agree it doesn't seem to work out.
I love that he always presents images of himself as both nefarious villain AND hopeless romantic, but no less dangerous for it. And uses images familiar to you if you've ever been trying to seduce a woman close to closing time and you're trying to "close the deal"(last down, seven alligator seven‐‐a football play call we used often in street football as kids, absolutely hilarious here).
Doesn't work out but the villain is still as dangerous as ever and warns the listeners in the next few verses.
He moves on (distracted?) to describe his dedication to the game and how deadly he is, at it (wild west style fest) and how long he's been at it (back in the game like Jack lalane-- who had an incredibly long career as a fitness guru).
His sneaker reference comes off more as braggadocio about his eclectic, tastes, rather than him describing his friends opinions of himself. Using imagery of the drug game he describes his skill, how dangerous he is and warnings about being on top of your money/ business (better get maaco-- from iconic 80s commercial for cars in real trouble) as well as some of the incredible, fly scenarios and places the game has taken him(doing bong hits on the roof on the west coast)
All in all I disagree that his stories are haphazard with only granular attention to his incredible jazzy delivery. They are opaque but seem demonstrably coherent--if you share a similar cultural framework. If you don't, like aesop rock, you layer your own interpretations over it, and that's fine.
I'm glad we got to experience his greatness.
He is STILL one of a kind, definition of UNIQUE.
I will miss his music and on Halloween, I'll slap his beats and weep. R.I.P.
Rest in peace, MF DOOM, and no I'm not late saying it, he deserves to be remembered for a long time.

I heard he never even used to listen to hip-hop, he was just a huge jazz fan. Makes sense when you consider that his rhymes are like nothing else in the genre and utilise the fluidity and unrestricted aspects of jazz

I look up MF DOOM’s lyrics on UA-cam and try to follow his rapping, trying to rhyme everything as he does, trying to go as fast as he does and if I can’t get it right I read it over and over again until I can rap the whole song without tripping over myself, I love DOOM.

There seems to be a lot of Kool Keith's influence in his stream of consciousness style. For example, if you look at Keith's first verse from Ego Trippin' (1986) you can catch a lot of weird, obscure metaphors that are almost incoherent and might as well be if you don't pay enough attention. Of course, it's not as lyrically dense as DOOM, but it definitely built the foundation for artists like him. I remember Del said he first met KMD when they played an Ultramagnetic MC's record at a gathering, and they immediately bonded over that.
I'm lucky I got to see DOOM live.

It's hard to focus on a video about Meat Grinder when it has Let Me Watch and Kon Queso in the background.
The thing is, it’s not his most in depth lyrically, but it slaps, and it still holds more lyrical acrobatics then most other songs 3x it’s length.
I always loved Meat Grinder for the fact it sampled Frank Zappa. My favorite DOOM track is Bada Bing with Danger Mouse.

Him and gfk have confirmed that a lot of these types of rhymes aren’t about anything. They just sound really cool to rhyme like that. Some have meanings but the vast majority are just dope rhyme schemes and multi rap. Still dope and legendary. Just funny seeing people break his songs down now that he passed
Yeah I remember seeing a Ghostface interview where they asked him to explain what his bars meant and he couldn't it's just as you say rhymes that sound good.

Madvillainy was the first rap album I ever listened to, coincidencidentally it only came out like a week before I was born. It completely changed my life and outlook on music. I'd never listened to a concept album before, let alone one like Madvillainy that's so experimental and concept heavy. Before that I was into blues and I saw albums as little more than a collection of songs but Madvillainy gave me a whole new outlook on music and a whole new appreciation for albums. Before listening to Madvillainy, I'd listen to two or three songs from an album based on weather I liked the sound of the title or not, now I listen to every single song and fully take in the lyrics and concept.

I think what makes DOOM great is he knows how to catch you off guard. It's just taking milliseconds to make you think like"What this dude is even talking about" to "HAHA that was clever" pretty quickly. And he's doing it a very smooth way
