Ive actually changed my mind on him, so I respectfully disagree: When he does watch a show he ends up either not paying attention, already deciding his take before watching, and/or just not understanding what he's watching and why. It turns out when he doesnt watch *at all* he sounds the same as when he claims to and apparently everyone over there is fine with that. So, fuck it, why watch any of the shows at all? If the paychecks are coming no matter what AND theyre happy with his contributions to the pod, why not spend the days doing activities + hobbies he enjoys instead? Or shit, get some remote freelance job and bring in a secondary revenue stream with all the free time.
I was annoyed at first with Charles. But I reminded myself that it's not that serious. I don't think anyone is legitimately relying on Charles's opinion on The Penguin and Agatha to determine if they are going to watch the show or not. This rating thing is more for fun/content. I don't agree with Charles's takes, but I'm trying not to let it bother me too much...trying 😭
Okay, I hope that Charles (and Steve!) making great points in the first two thirds of this ep. doesn't get completely drowned out by the response to the last third portion. I really think that convo. from the entire table around Monkey Man and Deadpool and how they relate to the entire filmmaking ecosystem is a really really needed discourse to be engaged in seriously in long-form content and I want more of that.
Not gonna lie Charles defending Steve and putting van on, is the first time I've ever agreed with Charles. Steve monkey man point I found Poiniant and Charles take on it vs Deadpool vs wolverine was too good. Obviously just my opinion.!
Yeah Charles’ whole “you guys seriously expect me to watch this slop” bit has gotten a little grating since it moved fully into “I’m just here to talk about how much I hate my job” cause shit, man, get to the back of the line then if that’s your thing. Any of us would gladly watch slop and talk about it for our jobs 😂
The conversation about Gladiator II and Furiosa both being unnecessary sequels was solid. Would love to see you guys look at some abandoned sequel concepts (like the Christ Killer Gladiator II) and rate how well they would’ve worked
really appreciated how your discussion on movie ratings expanded into what the movies mean to the broader industry/ecosystem. y'all are way more thoughtful about this than the studio execs
The best part of Agatha and the penguin are the endings . If Charles didn’t see the endings he can’t rate these shows and fails to understand what made those shows good
Sorry but Charles docking X-Men 97 1 point is literally docking the point for docking's sake. And that come from someone who haven't watch the show yet so literally no dogs in the game. Like I understand the reason for Kingdom of POTA, he's docking 1-2 points because at first he thought it's great, but then he realize he didn't think about it that much so 8 is like some point at the moment, in the "hype" so it need down a little. Kinda fair. But then you docking XMen 97 for the same reason, when you already gave it 6? You already thought it not that good already, of course you don't think about it that much then why you're docking the point now for not thinking about it?
Imagine you had to turn in a school paper and your teacher gave you a D- on the paper then at the end of the semester you findout the teacher didn't even read the paper. That teacher is Charles
Damn charles 3 for invincible season 2? I know it wasn’t as good as season 1 but jeez. You also can’t rate shows if you haven’t finished them that’s crazy
I can see why some people will go with Brutalist or Anora or any other movie as number 1 but what Denis Villeneuve archived with Dune 2 is truly remarkable and it will the benchmark for sci-fi movies going forward.
Another Hip-Hop radio classic is Camron trolling 50 in an interview via phone calling him "Curtis". Then, 50 used his government name for the title of his next album.
i got a friend JUST like Charles. If everybody loves something hes like thats MID and when everybody thinks something is trash hes like i didnt think it was bad
Still surprises me that some people expect serious criticism from Charles. He's obviously the Fox News of critique, there for the laughs, not to be taken seriously
Truly the Armond White of fandom. It is inspirational to see how someone can just wing it and DNF multiple shows AND still get paid. Cash that check, Charles. Maybe one day I too can get paid for doing as little as I can. 🤞
At this point, I wish they would replace Charles with Kerm. Charles is no negative to the point of making the pod completely unenjoyable. I used to love listening to the Midnight Boys but haven't listed in months due to Charles's negativity.
also surprised that with all of the cam'ron and 50 talk, no one brought up cam'ron calling angie martinez while 50 was there and unleashing the 'CURTIS!' rant
what world is van living in where the success of deadpool & wolverine leads to ANY studio suddenly going "yes let's bring back the theatrical mid-budget thriller“ l genuinely want to know. get fennessy on the pod to back steve & charles up here tbh
I really am so glad DKR is getting the fine wine treatment. Great movie and almost perfect ending to a trilogy. It had way too much to live up to and people were naturally gonna be too harsh on it.
It’s a good movie if not a really good movie. But it came in the wake of a great movie with a transcendent performance. I think people dinged it at the time for this, but now it’s being properly appreciated.
@ 1000% this but I think you can make the claim it came on the heels of a transcendent movie as well. TDK changed so much not in just comic book movie but movies in general.
Not trying to glaze lol but the "if the baton ain't being passed to me then I'm gonna take it" was 🤌🏽. Loved that Monkey Man discussion! Excellent points all around!
There's one thing I didn't like - what's entertaining to someone is objective. You can't tell someone that Deadpool & Wolverine was more 'entertaining' than Furiosa - we all enjoy different things and can't police what we take satisfaction from. We can always debate what is a better movie but personal feelings aren't something we can have an authority over.
4 & 5 for two of the better shows of the year isn't serious at all. I really hope Charles is able to find joy in other areas of life & doesn't go through his day to day just trying to come up with the most unique way to criticize things that are mostly fun. I guess I just don't get what we're doing here anymore. I like nerd content & want to hear people break it down & be excited about it. Just feels like we're going into things predisposed to not liking it & then the focus is on who can be the most clever about tearing it down. It's getting less fun to listen.
Joker has gone up to 6/10 for me, just for the ire it produces to its adult fans. Why are you taking it so personally? The movie was a -messy, uncoordinated, weird, unreasonably musical- deconstruction on the the pretentious fandom of the first movie. Being so upset that your fave is not a cool hero, which was evident in part 1, come on. I'm never watching it again, but i'm glad it exists
Charles isn't really a film head, it feels like hes just there for meaningless banter within these convos. He's not bringing real and authentic vibes to the exercise and it's really annoying to watch this.

Charles not finishing a show and then having the audacity to score is crazy 😢. That's a DNF for sure 😂
Next time Charles is about to not finish a show...he needs to remember Kerm is looming on the horizon
Charles, you're disqualified from rating things you didn't actually finish watching.

So accurate lol
Ooof

Yooooo I can't un-see it now. Charles takes are just a person with too much time spent thinking about this shit.
Charles admitting he didn't finish those shows is like a crazy ass season finale twist
1:35:16 Charles stop playing. You know you wouldn’t pull up to any other pod not doing your homework. Someone get Bill Simmons to talk to this man.

agreed. it felt like van was arguing just to be arguing tbh. I'm not sure how anyone reasonable can not understand Steve and Charles' points.
