Heart Attack Hill - Pinyon Mountain Trail

- Point it down and don't turn or try to stop. Heart Attack Hill is the last major obstacle on the Pinyon Mountain Trail in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California. Extremely steep with a loose sand surface and an intimidating drop-in, this downhill section is actually not that complicated if you crawl straight down in low gear.
Pinyon Mountain is a Jeep Badge of Honor trail. While I enjoyed the scenery of the park and beautiful desert surroundings, I don't recommend this trail to most Jeep drivers due to the likelihood of serious body damage on The Squeeze obstacle, the long washboard trail out, and the crowds south of Ocotillo Wells. The park is definitely worth exploration but unless you are a hardcore badge collector you may want to skip this specific trail.
Nice, planning on giving it a shot this Friday. I don't think I've even seen a video of someone going down the other entry point. I'm running a gladiator. Nice video!
I hope you have a great time! I'm going to caution you though, I tore my passenger mirror off and damaged the door going through the Squeeze on this same run despite being careful. If you have wide tires it's almost impossible to get through without body damage. In hindsight I should have taken the door completely off. Tell me how it goes!
I went down this 2xs. the first 1979, was successful, driving a Baja Bug, although the doors were tweaked a little afterwards. The second, 1987, was with a Meyers Manx fiberglass buggy. Tore the spring plate out. I think it was already cracked. Had to trailer it out. The squeeze will damage larger jeeps if not careful.
I tore my passenger mirror off in the squeeze, hah. Baja bug sounds really fun on trails!
How steep was the grade?
I would guess it varied between 20-30 degrees. The loose surface and distance to the bottom are what make it dangerous.
