Gold Mountain - 1 Hour ENTIRE TRAIL Drive
Gold Mountain trail, starting right outside of the town of Big Bear California, immediately climbs 1,400 feet to a field of rocky scree below the peak, but to get started you'll have to drive over the man-made gatekeeper obstacle of large rocks. Gold Mountain is one of the Jeep Badge of Honor trails and is in good company with John Bull and Holcomb Creek also nearby.
I had a great stay in Big Bear in late November and enjoyed all three trails before a winter storm swept through. Gold Mountain was the easiest trail, but the rock field (also known as the "Boneyard") is a unique feature that you won't want to miss. Unfortunately, the route out of Gold Mountain takes you past the local dump and is a bit of a letdown after the beautiful mountain scenery.

Interstate 70 on the Way from Las Vegas to Moab
Переглядів 402 місяці тому
In November 2023 I was traveling from Yosemite to Moab with a stop in Las Vegas. After clear weather in California a winter storm chased me all the way to my destination, and I passed over the mountains in central Utah through a blanket of snow and clouds. The poem is "Snow" by Jared Carter, published in 1999. His collections have won the Walt Whitman Award, and he has received several literary...
Backway to Crown King - One of My Favorite Jeep Trails
Переглядів 8575 місяців тому
Backway to Crown King is a terrific offroad trail that travels from Lake Pleasant (northwest of Phoenix, Arizona) to the old mining town of Crown King. The route has a variety of desert scenery, moderate obstacles, and a long climb with panoramic views. Jeep drivers can also check this one of their Badge of Honor list. Despite being a tiny former mining town, Crown King has a well stocked gener...
John Bull Trail - 1 Hour FULL Drive

John Bull Trail, just north of Big Bear, California, is known as one of the hardest 4x4 trails in the San Bernardino National Forest. Steep winding climbs and rock gardens that never seem to end make it a popular challenge for off-road enthusiasts. I visited in late November and enjoyed beautiful weather while driving this trail and the nearby Holcomb Creek and Gold Mountain trails. As part of ...

Except for the two big rock gardens, Holcomb Creek is an easy drive that winds along a creek and through beautiful pine. The rock gardens are another story. Join me on this full point-of-view drive with highlights at the major obstacles. Crunching Around on Gold Mountain

Gold Mountain Trail is one of three Jeep Badge of Honor trails in the San Bernardino National Forest north of Big Bear Lake, California. Although it's rated easier than John Bull and Holcomb Creek, Gold Mountain still has a number of rocky climbs and ledges. The highlight of the trail is the "Bone Yard", a vast pile of loose rock that crunches and shifts as you drive across it. I enjoyed terrif...
Heart Attack Hill - Pinyon Mountain Trail

Point it down and don't turn or try to stop. Heart Attack Hill is the last major obstacle on the Pinyon Mountain Trail in the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California. Extremely steep with a loose sand surface and an intimidating drop-in, this downhill section is actually not that complicated if you crawl straight down in low gear. Pinyon Mountain is a Jeep Badge of Honor trail. While I enj...
John Bull Trail Highlights (Easier Than Expected)

John Bull OHV Trail, near Big Bear Lake, California, is one of three Jeep Badge of Honor Trails in the San Bernardino National Forest area. It's often compared to Holcomb Creek as one of the harder trails in the area thanks to long stretches of large rocks and boulders. I expected this trail to be difficult but there were always good lines and the rock gardens were much easier than Holcomb Cree...
Top of the World Trail - Snowy Day
Переглядів 13311 місяців тому
There was something special about crunching through frozen puddles and being the first person to Top of the World on a snowy November day. This famous trail and its spectacular overlook are a Moab staple and a Jeep Badge of Honor trail. There was enough slippery snow that I used my winch a few times, but the effort was worth the view. The trailhead is 45 minutes northeast of Moab. Other than a ...
Crawling the Holcomb Creek Rock Gardens

Holcomb Creek Trail is a beautiful OHV trail near Big Bear Lake, California, in the San Bernardino National Forest. One of the more difficult off-road trails in the area, it winds along Holcomb Creek and offers two long and difficult rock gardens as well as other obstacles. My Jeep scraped bottom a few times in the rock gardens but careful lines made this trail an enjoyable challenge overall. H...
Epic Bronco Hill Climb! (Traxxas TRX-4M)

Epic off-road trail driving at Eagle Mountain Park! Driving a 1/18 scale Traxxas TRX-4M Bronco, that is. The hiking paths in the park are terrific obstacles for a remote control car smaller than a shoebox. I can't always take my real Jeep out to the trails so we're exploring some other options. The Traxxas TRX-4M models have amazing off-road features for a RC car, like 4-wheel drive, solid axle...
Toyota Tacoma on Peewee's Crossing at SMORR

My friend brought his 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road to meet me at SMORR (Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch), and we had blast driving trails and camping. The "Taco" proved itself very capable and had no trouble with the trails I wanted to run in my Jeep: Pee Wee's Crossing, Guard Rail, and Cougar Crossing. His Tacoma is a 6-speed manual has a Dobinsons lift with GS shocks, a Cali Raised Stealt...
Pee Wee's Crossing Trail Drive Through- SMORR

A rainy day made this trail drive especially scenic! Pee Wee's Crossing is one of the longer trails at Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch (SMORR), and is one of the Jeep Badge of Honor trails. It winds down a creek between trees and hillsides, and is easily driveable by most stock four-wheel drive vehicles. I was joined on this trip by my friend in his Toyota Tacoma. After a soggy day in the park...

Did that trail on a Raptor 660. Lol. Damn near ripped my arms off 😅
I bet it was a tight squeeze in some places with the width of the Raptor.
@kayloradventure Yamaha raptor. Not too wide but only two wheel drive 🤓
@@darrinmcgann Oh lol, I was imagining a Ford Raptor squeezing through, slight difference.
@@kayloradventure yeah.on the way down we met a full size Chevy pickup heading up the cliffs near the top. We almost didn't fit, and we couldn't stop because of all the loose gravel. I love that trail!
Great Video! Thanks for sharing.
2.0 Turbo? Nice video! Just did something similar last week in South Dakota
Yes, 2.0 turbo and it's been a great engine. What are some good trails in South Dakota?
*great job ❤ love Gold Mountain*
a field of rocks.
Definitely a lot of rocks.
Thanks for the ride along 🤙
We love this trail as well!
Trail doesnt look very challenging. How long does it take to complete from start to finish?
I think half an hour is plenty if you don't get lost. If it has rained and you don't have mud tires it could be more difficult, and I did have to winch up a small hill because it was super slick.
It amazes me how bad that trail has gotten year by year.
Do you mean the difficulty or condition of the trail?
@@kayloradventure condition mainly. But I guess the two are related on some level.
Cool footage! Can you tell me where your camera was mounted? Haven't seen many angles like that
It's a 360 camera on the end of a selfie stick that extends out from the bumper. You might be able to see the shadow of the stick in some shots. Thanks for your comment!
Oof fur
What offset are you running on your wheels?
Hi, -38mm offset or 3.5" backspacing, they sit way out there which I like for providing body clearance and stability off-camber.
Looks like you breezed through that trail, nice work sir.
are there any actual creeks or rivers near by this trail?
Yes, the trail follows Holcomb Creek and crosses at several points.
Excellent video, I haven't done this trail in years. but plan on doing it soon. This gets me motivated.
Such a cool destination trail, I hope you get out there.
This is a must to watch, if your preparing to run this trail. thanks for recording the entire trail. Nice rock pile perspectives also. I like not having any music. Felt like I was riding with you.
I'm glad you found it useful. The style is different, but you may enjoy my Black Gap Road ride-video for a long scenic drive.
Thank you so much for the video, especially the turn by turn directions posted on the screen. I was able to pause the video when the turns came up and plot a route in ONX for my upcoming trip to KRRP Outstanding video! Going to check out your other videos now.
That was the second time I ran it that day, because the first time I kept getting lost!
This is fantastic
Heading here this weekend, 3rd time at the park I see that they haven't spaced the trees wide enough for a Wrangler yet 😂 Pop a side mirror every time! Can't wait though
I think the trees and mud were conspiring to cause maximum damage.
excellent video... and choice of music! great Job!
Thanks, I do spend a lot of time trying to find music so I appreciate it!
excellent video.
Maybe Bronco owners can get the trail owners to pave the trails for them to see if the tie rod problems go away or maybe the GOAT mode is jinxing the bronco GET OUT AND TOW ! 😂
Great camera views. Should add a little commentary
Just discovered your channel. Awesome videos and great wheelin. 👍
Did that trail last weekend!
How was hamburger hill?
@@kayloradventure awesome. We did it. I’m in a tj on 35s long arm. As long you got lockers. It’s easy
I went down this 2xs. the first 1979, was successful, driving a Baja Bug, although the doors were tweaked a little afterwards. The second, 1987, was with a Meyers Manx fiberglass buggy. Tore the spring plate out. I think it was already cracked. Had to trailer it out. The squeeze will damage larger jeeps if not careful.
I tore my passenger mirror off in the squeeze, hah. Baja bug sounds really fun on trails!
I have a Bronco and the first thing Bronco owners should do is install upgraded tie rods. I never did break one but I didn't want to experience something similar to this before I had those installed🤣!
My friend upgraded after this video, I bet he would have preferred your order though!
Appreciate your video!!!
That was a great trip, hope you've been out on the trails lately!
Just came across your videos. great job! I'm heading up that way next month with a buddy of mine for a weekend trip. we were going to hit K-Rocks too (been there already but it was the December before they got the badge trails.) but decided to spend 2 whole days wheeling SMORR. maybe catch ya on a trail! keep the shiny side up and rubber down!
Thanks, hopefully you get just enough water in the creeks to make it interesting!
Are the tires aired down?
Yes, probably around 17-18 psi but maybe lower would have helped.
Awesome vid. I want to explore that pass and a few hopefully easier paths someday. But when it comes to Google or Apple maps, yeah learned long time ago if it directs you to a questionable route, I'll stop and bring up the map and look for alternate ones. As this could have been far worse for them. They were lucky you were there.
Just like FJ cruisers. Stock FJ's and Broncos can't rock crawl to many trips before they break. TRUTH. You need to carry spares with you on every trip. I dont think even the after-market stuff will hold up with time. Overlanding and Mall Crawling is all they can do stock.
Thanks for the video!! We run Windrock, but in side by sides. Been up and down trail 16 in the rain.
Thanks! I bet it's a completely different trail in the rain, sounds like a fun challenge.
Beautiful! Love the head-on coming down river bed. Great suspension! Looks like fun!
Thanks, it was my favorite trail while I visited Big Bear.
Great video. I really liked getting to see the full trail. Especially since you didn't add music to this! :D Listening to the hum of the engine and just the sound of the tires going over the rocks...it's perfect.
That's the comment I always hope for on my long videos. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
You think a 2 door on 35s can make it?
Absolutely, but it would be smart to go in a group and have recovery gear and a winch.
I will say, at least they were going the easier direction. A box truck tried to go up it the other way a few years ago and blocked the pass for several days.
Each story I hear about Ophir Pass gets a little crazier. I'm not sure what's next after a box truck!
@@kayloradventure these things happen when you blindly follow GPS.
Nice, planning on giving it a shot this Friday. I don't think I've even seen a video of someone going down the other entry point. I'm running a gladiator. Nice video!
I hope you have a great time! I'm going to caution you though, I tore my passenger mirror off and damaged the door going through the Squeeze on this same run despite being careful. If you have wide tires it's almost impossible to get through without body damage. In hindsight I should have taken the door completely off. Tell me how it goes!
How often do you have to change out skid plates? Some of those rocks look sharp.
I don't land on the center plates very often, but the rock sliders on each side have huge dents where they did their job. Fortunately, those are OEM and people sell them for cheap because they usually get replaced with steps or after-market.
What gear ratio are you running?
Hi, my Jeep is geared at 4.88, up from factory 4.11.
Thanks. I’m about to be ordering a 2024 2 door rubicon with 4.88 gears.
Now you know why Ford named it GOAT mode. Really means GetOutAndTow !
Ouch lol.
First of all, Ridge Grapples are not designed for rock crawling. There an overland tire. That’s why there quite on the pavement. Yea, they do great off road, but not on the rocks. Factors are, airing down, using lockers & knowing how to drive!
How steep was the grade?
I would guess it varied between 20-30 degrees. The loose surface and distance to the bottom are what make it dangerous.
Great shots!
Cool video, glad we met on the trail. Was a lot of FUN!!!
Hey! I'm so glad you saw the video, and there will be more with your truck when I post the full drive-through. Hope the rest of your holidays are great!
I have some Nitto Terra Grappler G2 A/T which is similar to the Ridge Grappler on my JLUR and yes, they are not for that type of off road use. here in Louisiana where it is wet most of the time and when mud gets into the grooves it will spin and spin, no traction at all. Nitto Trail Grappler M/T is better for that.
this video Rocks.
Cool video! I think there's a story behind the passenger side duct tape though...
Oh yes, I have painful video of the mirror getting torn off. It's coming up!
Is there a difficulty rating on something like this?
It's 6-8 out of 10 on Jeep's list, that's about right for typical Jeep builds.
Great video. What tires are you running?
Thanks, I'm on 37x13.50r17 Toyo Open Country MT's.
