I feel like the coffee world is very fussy and very strict. With good reason! But many normal people aren't that deep Into coffee, and this is an exceptionally good option that feels high end.
So this is now 3 years old ... any updates? Still your daily grinder? Loves/hates surfaced in that time? I just got mine yesterday for Aero/French press, and it's an absolute dream and far superior to the Opus (noisy/slow). How do you feel today?
love this ... been looking for a more 'normal' person talking about this ... also love that, like me, you struggle with words ... great review, thank you :)
@@LittleTipple more real 😎 I’m still umm-ing and ah-ing at the moment on this, I read they may be tweaking the burs to allow for realistic grind settings for pour overs at the low ends ... but I’m sure this has to more consistent than grinding by hand every morning 😎
And .... I took the plunge... and so far so good although I’m still a noob so I’m sure my grind settings is al over the place but seem to get a nice consistency and it the end coffee tastes good to me 😎
I got mine through the Kickstarter and really like it. Only negative I have is it’s messy as there’s a good amount of static and the knocker isn’t very effective. Really excited for the updated burr set this summer.
Me too - looking forward to what it’ll bring to the grinder! And as for the knocker, what I’ve found is it’s most effective if the grounds cup isn’t there - then it can really make a whole lot of mess!🤣😂
One thing I’ve found is if after I grind I walk away for a minute or two...then return and use knocker, I’ve had less issues with static and better return of all the grounds.
I tried it out of interest - it works, but it is a little bit more messy - not badly so, but you definitely get some chaff spillage. You're right though, it is the most annoying part of the design!
I see depression from dropping tons on a coffee grinder at 5:00 😆😆 I just got the one with the ssp burrs and I'm excited to make pour over coming from a cheap drip coffee maker and a cheap grinder. Nothing like making the perfect coffee in the morning. But it just seems like so much money, you'd think it would be cheaper to engineer for the same quality grind
great review - thank you so much. I heard that the magnetic cup does not work with digital scales which would be a major drawback - but you seem to be using a scale? any thoughts
I've never had any issue with it at all - i huess if the scales had any ferro-magnetic material in them it could cause an issue, but i think metal scales are relatively rare...
@@LittleTipple thanks Tipple, yes I bought it and no issues with my Hario scale - the pouring guides inside the cup are annoying though, I don't see any value except another place for grounds to get stuck. I am very happy!
Hi, I also make v60s every day and thinking of upgrading my commandante. Have you compared the taste of coffee this grinder makes compared to an EK 43?
It's a cheap and cheerful one from amazon - aesthetically it's not perfect, but it's better than the little silver one's i've had before, and i'm struggling to justify the high costs of the "coffee specific" scales - pearl etc...
Thoughts on the Ode w/ v.1.1 burrs for $299 vs the DF64 for $418? Btw, this would be my second grinder more for brewing and only espresso once in a while as a single doser (I already own a Eureka Atom as a dedicated espresso grinder). I just love the Ode design and size. I'm also told by Fellow that the v.2 burrs will be available later this year that will reduce grind size another 100+/- microns (v.1.1 reduced add'l 100 microns from v.1).
Great video and review! Purchased this and waiting for my delivery. Out of interest what’s your fav v60 filter? Noticed you using a metal permanent filter and a paper
Good choice! How're you getting on so far? I use a paper at home (and have started using the Sibarist papers in a hario switch too) and the metal in the van, as less to have to remember to pack - I prefer the flavour from the paper, but the metal has ease of use, and instagrammability on its side!
Hey there, it's the Hario v60 double mesh metal dripper - I originally bought it for the campervan because it doesn't require any papers - but love the taste of it at home, so it hasn't quite made it to the van yet (lack of trips due to the pandemic may also have influenced this...)
No, it is purely a pourover/immersion grinder - at setting 1, it’s a fine pourover/aero press, but that’s as fine as it goes - the burrs have an odd collar that stops them getting closer together - however, there is rumour that there will be an espresso version coming sometime down the line...
I’m not sure whether you’re meaning you think I went into too much detail and you didn’t need it, or it made you feel that you can just enjoy your coffee - but either way, cheers, and enjoy your coffee!
At this price I think it’s misleading to call the Ode just a grinder. The target market is brew-method enthusiasts but it can’t grind fine enough for a single cup V60 and has half the grind range dedicated to French Press, most of which is too coarse, even for making cold brew. It’s a pretty big oversight and one that Fellow is aware of and will hopefully remedy by implementing a better burr set in a product revision later this year. They will even be offering upgrades to customers who purchased the first wave of Odes which means Fellow knows it released a sub-par product. Even “normal people” should get what they pay for, and right now the Ode doesn’t deliver on the promise Fellow made with their Kickstarter campaign. It’s a pretty grinder but there are much cheaper options like the Baratza Encore which is half the price, grinds finer and produces a grind size only slightly less consistent than the Ode. If money is of no concern and you don’t really care about coffee than by all means, buy this grinder. It’s beautiful. Otherwise, it’s worth recommending that potential buyers wait for the refresh coming this summer, or consider other options.
Do you own one, or have you used one? Thank you for your comment - it means a lot that you’ve taken that much time to comment. What I would say is I have been using it for a while now, and I like it. It’s got a few flaws, but I get a good cup of coffee out of it, and it works. So far, as far as I am aware, there is no such thing as a “perfect grinder”. Perhaps, as this is a message you’re clearly so passionate about, you could make a video letting people know your point of view?
I love it - the knocker on the side isn’t always as effective as it could be - it works better once the static has had time to subside, but overall it’s exactly what I wanted! In time, I might get a new burr set, but I’m not sure - the standard set does great for me at the moment!
Wanted this grinder for quite a while but can't justify it without it getting fine enough for an espresso. I don't have time/patience for a pour over every morning. Just begging they create a v2 that allows a finer grind as well.
Great video, I appreciated hearing your perspective! I had the same transition, from smart grinder pro to fellow ode. Really liking the ode in most ways. Regarding the grind range on the ode, I was actually grinding quite coarse at the beginning for my 20g pour overs, maybe a 4-5 setting. I am not sure whether the burrs are breaking in or just older/different beans, but now I am down to 1-3. It hasn’t been a problem yet, but makes me a bit uncertain. I am considering replacing the burrs once fellow makes the new version or buying ssp burrs, but if the current burrs work I would rather stick with it and save the money.
Thank you, it's good to know others are in the same boat too - I'm going to keep an eye out on the new possible burrs, but yeah, at the moment, I'm happy with what I've got! It's just seeing whether that uncertainty turns into anything else...
Fellow does have a video on UA-cam on how to recalibrate your burrs. You adjust the grinder to 1, unplug, remove the face plate, the 4 M3 screws, plug back in, turn on and turn the nob to the left until you hear the burrs touching (grinding or clicking noise) then immediately turn it back up one notch after. Then reinstall the face plate and knob making sure it's still at the "1" setting same as when you removed it. Hopefully this fixes any loosening burrs or coarsening grind issues.
Wish the grind range was a bit more, especially for the price. Right now I have a baratza maestro plus that just died, trying to figure out if I repair it for ~70 or get something else. The single use hopper is intriguing, as is the auto stop, noise level, and less static. But it's a bit much $ wise.
You’re definitely paying for the brand and design - but as a grinder, it works really well, and the single dosing has fitted really well into my workflow!
I'm glad I'm not the only person who was happy with Coffee Hit - they're surprisingly down to Earth for a merchant and just want to provide good quality service. I intend to use my Ode for V60 as I couldn't really find an alternative I wanted (looking at you, Encore) - what's your mileage with V60?
Couldn't agree more - their communication was great! Loving it with the v60 - I know a lot of people say it doesn't grind fine enough, but it definitely seems fine enough to me!
Just found your video and loved it. I’m so on the fence with purchasing one. I currently have an OXO grinder with intergraded scale. My 2 main questions: 1) Do you think it will make a better cup of coffee than my OXO? 2) Would you wait for the second generation one that I read could be here by summer? It’s actually on sale today here in the US for 15 percent off so it makes it harder not to pull the trigger and purchase one.. Thanks again!!
So, what I’d say is that it will technically grind the coffee better than your oxo grinder - you’ve got 40mm conical burrs, the 62mm flat burrs are theoretically better and will be more consistent. And I would argue that the ode is prettier... but as to whether it’ll make a better cup of coffee... you’ve got to make that call yourself. I know I enjoy making my coffee more because of it, because it’s pretty and sounds nicer, and I love the single dosing, so I can change my coffee constantly... but it’s not night and day difference - however, with 15% off, and if you want one, and can afford it, then it’s a really good option... I haven’t heard about v2 yet though - I’ll look into that...
@@LittleTipple Thanks for the response.. Life is short, going to pull the trigger and buy one. Thanks again.. Looking forward to more of your videos. Maybe a blind taste test comparing the Sage and the Ode??

With the current burr set, it probably doesn't quite go fine enough, though I haven't tried my moka pot with it yet to see... However, there are lots of suggestions they'll be releasing, or at least recommending a new burr set, which probably will go fine enough. And thanks for that comment - they seem to have been slightly divisive, and I was just trying something a bit different for an unboxing...
Used with my moka pot and it goes fine enough, you can always add a slight tamp to the moka pot to compress the cake to account for the extra coarseness if it's a concern but I've not needed too
Got to say I'm a bit disappointed. Watched this video and thought, i think I'll enjoy watching some more, but there's very little coffee content. Well presented and interesting.
You're absolutely right, the Calibra is great, and cheap, but it also has a small conical burr set, so isn't a massively comparable product, as the Ode has a much larger flat burr set. thanks for your comment though!
Thank you - I worry it all sounds a bit flat wihtout music, but I know what you mean - I've tried my latest video with far more minimal music, let me know what you think? And thank you for your support!
The shaky cam at the unboxing made me feel sick. If it was just 5 seconds it wouldn't be to bad but a full 1 and half minutes of it. Work on the camera work.
