    for everyone looking, prices are much lower on these today than was made i this video. The 30" "generic" model he has in the video can be purchased for less than $450 today and a "quality machine" from a manufacturer like Baleigh Industrial in 30" can be purchased for about $600. That said for guys needing a smaller one, they make these as small as 12" units and those go for around $250. Just looking out for ya.

    We have a mixed bag of brand names in our shop.
    They range from Baileigh, Pexto, Tennsmith, Di-Acro, Woodward, Edwards, Van Sant/Trick-Tools, Swag, Roper, Whitney, Roper/Whitney and JD2.
    Most of these are not entry level units, some are relatively expensive and some are what I consider lower end.
    However, we have very few issues with them, some have been in service quite a few years and are used extensively on a regular basis.
    When asked about what to buy, I usually reply, buy what you will use and get the best quality/duty that you can comfortably afford.

    Your candor is much appreciated. Had been eyeing up one of these machines, but after watching this vid I think a Beverly shear ($150) and a small box and pan brake ($350) would a better choice for my shop.

    Problem is I found once you get that tool its only the start. You need allot more to complement it. Shrinker stretcher , planishing hammer, English wheel and a Nice water cooled tig welder that has a very nice low end to join all this metal working together.

    I’ve got a slip roll. I’m continuously folding 1/2” bends with it. Ideally, I’d love to have a ‘baking plate’ that’s fixed behind the bending tool (excuse my lack of technical terms)
    I’ve seen slip rolls with these in place. Maybe they’re a custom piece ? I’ve tried it myself but can’t seem to find a piece that back plate can hold in place. Lol I’m writing these realizing it prob make no sense and I need to do a video. 🤣

    Yep I agree they are only good for small pieces I had one and sold it and got a proper brake and sheer. Try and sheer a piece of 30 inch 20 gauge and you will see what happens. I also found with mine that I had to always gap the sheer depending temperature if it was hot it would bind and if it was cold it would chew the piece that was on the sheer the rollers and brake where ok.

    nice work! the this tool section is really good and I send my sons to your channel for reference so I hope you continue to add to the section. There's new gear coming out all the time and nice to get a good info. so not to waste time and money.
    You were pondering on ideas for shows...
    How about some information on setting up a home shop properly ? lighting, tool storage, work benches,large tool location, safety thoughts (don't go to far), how and where to store chemicals, power outlets/breakers, air outlet,tool storage, ventilation..flooring,work bench ,climate control. smoke detectors, room for expansion for large projects,on and on,Theres just a hundred things to consider. Everybody sets up their shop differently, and for dffierant types of work and reasons I would be interested in your thoughts on that.
    My grandfather was a boat builder and going to his shop was the best thing on the planet. Small shop but everything in its place(easier to heat/cool). I'm pretty sure I spent more time in the shop then in the house. He put the wood stove and a one exterior wall on wheels so you can roll large projects out of the building. Even had a bunkhouse on the side...you didn't really ever need to leave except for re-supply,, ahhh good times !

    curious on a slip roll vs an english wheel vs a planshing hammer machine why choose on vs the other? Still trying to figure this one out.

    • @Thefabforums
      @Thefabforums  5 років тому

      a slip roll will only roll the material...an english wheel or planisher can smooth and shape the material by flattening or stretching small areas

    • @natefidalgo7625
      @natefidalgo7625 5 років тому

      @@Thefabforums ok so then whats the difference in using a planshing hammer machine vs english wheel vs a stretcher/shrinker machine? Thanks for clarity on the slip roll so its more just to form cylinder shapes , cone shapes , or u- like shapes /partial cone or cylinder shapes.

    • @Thefabforums
      @Thefabforums  5 років тому

      @@natefidalgo7625 main difference is the shrinker stretchers only stretch in one direction. The planisher and English wheel stretches in all directions at the same time. You also get more reach with a wheel or planisher

    does 30 inches mean that it will sheer 30'' , bend 30'', and roll 30''? I ask because I want one for building body work on bikes when my english wheel and shaping bags can't give me the right shape

    • @SuperChief83
      @SuperChief83 8 років тому

      Also if it say's for example it can handle 22 gauge mild steel does that mean that it can handle thicker aluminum?

    • @Thefabforums
      @Thefabforums  8 років тому

      +SuperChief83 it can handle close to 30" of 22 gauge material. Thicker if its aluminum or not as wide

    • @SuperChief83
      @SuperChief83 8 років тому

      So just go up in thickness and size to find what it can handle? Also does the slip roll have the hardening effect of an english wheel because 20-22 gauge aluminum is pretty flimsy. Also thanks for the reply cheers
