"Going" to the show with an expert commentator is maybe even better than being there in person without the input from someone so knowledgeable, but I'd still love to see this first hand. That is one nice D2, clean and elegant. Thanks for letting us tag along. Hopefully, there are more examples in this mini series.
Pretty cool old D2! I guess of the D2's vs. IH, it would be like finding the late Case SC's before they switched to the number series. They made at least 4 different engine blocks for the SC's... Lots of 'running production changes' done to those tractors.
Thanks for the walk around of the 5J. Your knowledge of these machines is amazing. I plan to be at Nowthen on the Saturday of the weekend too, so hopefully our paths will cross at some point during the show. 🇺🇲🚜👍
There's nothing like listening to an expert, whatever the topic, and it's hard to imagine there's someone else in the US who knows more about old Cats than Squatch.
The dozer blade is nice and close to the tractor......much more controllable and effective. The "modern" dozers could use that same tech to improve their performance.
Curious about the hydraulic pumps. If they are using the front mounted (model 44?) for pump, tank and distribution to the hydraulic cylinders... what are the hoses on the rear mounted pump going to? Great commentary Toby!!
I was more interested in the big caterpillar that was right next to that tractor I see that you did a little tease because I seen that rounded bumper that you're trying to make
If there is a new front mounted hydraulic pump for running the blade, then what was the original rear pump being use for? Also 113 still has some holes in the dash panel where things like this ones temperature gauge mount. Those holes 🕳️ are going to become really obvious (🐁doors!) once you get the new wooden cab mounted on 113. 🤔
Good, old fashioned rivalry between the CAT crowd and the John Deere folks. Air cleaners keep crap out of your engine... ergo, the JD is "crap" being kept out.
Ok, I have two questions. One is stupid and one is really stupid. Question 1: Why do Cat owners put toy John Deere tractors in their air cleaners? Question 2: On a D2, with electric start on the pony motor, would it be possible to use the starter to spin over the starting engine (with the fuel off) and engage the pony to the diesel engine to start it? Like I said, I know it's a really stupid question, but I can't help but wonder if it would work
Well let's say the electric starter is doing maybe 200 rpm Then you start the pony motor and once running it'll do 1000rpm then it'll spin the main engine just fast enough to start it Those numbers are totally made up but the starter doesn't spin as fast as the pony motor running so the electric starter wouldn't be able to achieve the rpm to start the main
It would barely spin it cause the electric start for the pony motor used 6v. The did have electric start for the diesel but required 24v. The pony motor also did the job of what glow plugs and block heaters that didn't really exist back then.
Ok… what’s the deal with carrier rollers. I have an early 5j (1938) with carrier rollers. My cat “Operator’s Instructions” book has a photo showing a D2 with no carrier roller (page 31)

It drives as well as it looks 👍
You could easily be a museum curator.. The amount of knowledge you have in your head is fascinating..
He's building his own working museum.

I just learned a lot , but I didn’t know much before . I just acquired a J58926
Your commentary is worth as much or more than the video images. Thanks very much for taking us along.
Agreed- that hydraulic setup looks great

That's a good looking 5J,thanks for the walk around
It is fun to watch you guys look at the machines and point things out. Nice video.
Very nice old D2, a friend of mine had a Super MTA that kept sucking up John Deeres on the pulling track.
Go watch Iowan Farm "will it start" a D6 9U. The oil bath was full of dead mice so he named it the Barn Cat.
I really do injoy a Cat walk around. Thanks

That’s one great looking D2.👌😎👍
Hope to see walkaround of that Sixty Five too!
What a sweet little machine!
That right there is one sweet looking Cat! many thanks for posting
That 5JD2 is one I’d like to have
Great video that’s a cool looking crawler I love that blade set up looks clean and compact
Pretty clean little unit, nice.
THANKS FOR SHARING
That’s the first one I’ve seen with the hydraulic cylinders mounted like that thanks for sharing buddy

beautiful
A walk round is only as good as the person carrying it out an who better 🤔👌
Very nice lookng machine!
Interesting walk around, do you know what the modern looking black box was for on the exhaust manifold? I guess an after market temp sensor?
Nice looking machine
Very nice commentary!
nice looking crawler
Like the grab handle on the dash. Must make it a lot easier to get up and in.
I was drawn to that machine next to this one, with the curved bumper on the front. What was that? Looked cool from here.
Curious about the hydraulic pumps. If they are using the front mounted (model 44?) for pump, tank and distribution to the hydraulic cylinders... what are the hoses on the rear mounted pump going to? Great commentary Toby!!
Nice machine 👍😊
Would have liked to been there! Almost in my backyard!
Even dozen 👊🏻💪🏻
😂😂 them JD’s getting sucked up just crack me up 🤷♂️ … 🤙
Yep, I figure the pre-cleaner jar catches some of the bigger trash before it can travel to the main air cleaner. Great way to make a subtle jab.😄
But, but, BUT!!!!! What about that SWEET and massive Sixty Five next to it?!?
@@squatch253 awesome thank you good sir. I hope you invited it and the owner to plow day at your ranch.
I would estimate the 4500 hrs as actual. I think it would be showing a lot more wear with another 10k hours
I was more interested in the big caterpillar that was right next to that tractor I see that you did a little tease because I seen that rounded bumper that you're trying to make
Dang you know your CATs
properly equipped with a little dozer in the breather !!
Looking good. Are going to add stuff like that to yours?
What model was that large one next to it? A D8?
Have you ever seen somebody use the pony engine for live hydraulics? Thank you for the walk around!
Were the air cleaners outsourced from the factory ? Look the same as the air cleaner on a Hough loader.

Squatch what was the chains for on the ends of the hydraulic rams for? Was it for traveling so Incase the pressure leaked down?
Thanks for the explanation Sir!!!
I wish I could find something like that near me for sale
Squatch, what year did Cat start using hydraulics?
What's the purpose of the chains dangling on the blade rams, an indication of side slope angle?
@@squatch253 Oic, might have over thought that a little - facepalm
Hey Squatch,
Do you need another RD-6 project? I would like to send you some pictures. RD-6 in logging application, boom on the rear.
What's the bolted-on black thing that you actually put your hand on at 4:40???
@@squatch253 Thanks!
Did you say this show is in Jordan, Minnesota Toby ?
Can someone explain to me the john deer tractor in the air cleaner?

Like Jeep ducks! 🦆
My guess: i think it would spin the main engine but wouldn't come close to having enough beans to start it
Well let's say the electric starter is doing maybe 200 rpm
Then you start the pony motor and once running it'll do 1000rpm then it'll spin the main engine just fast enough to start it

Hate to say it, but your cool new-to-you cab is closer to this D2's color, no?
I take it the show was good?
Ok… what’s the deal with carrier rollers. I have an early 5j (1938) with carrier rollers. My cat “Operator’s Instructions” book has a photo showing a D2 with no carrier roller (page 31)
It was probably a later option.
John Deere in the air cleaner? Was that a toy dozer in the glass jar? Someone fill me in, please. Is it an inside joke?
Squatch... everything you just described about that machine matches my ex-wife! 🤣
Oh yeah a John Deere jab LOL.....I will say they do build a pretty shitty dozer so I'll give you that!
