- Exploring the Rich History of Carson City and Genoa, Nevada
Join me on an exciting adventure as we explore the Nevada State Capital, Carson City, and take a trip back in time to the historic town of Genoa. Buckle up as we ride through the captivating landscapes and delve into the fascinating past of these remarkable locations.
Genoa: Where Nevada's History Began
Our journey starts in Genoa, Nevada, a town steeped in history and charm. Nestled in what was once the Mexican territory of Alta California, Genoa was first settled by Mormon pioneers. This quaint settlement began as a humble trading post known as Mormon Station. Imagine weary travelers on the Carson Route of the California Trail finding solace and supplies here. In June 1850, after the Mexican Cession, H.S. Beatie and his fellow Mormons built a roofless log enclosure and corral near a small stream, offering essentials like clothing, tobacco, meat, canned goods, coffee, beans, sugar, flour, and bacon. Though the post was abandoned later that year, it laid the groundwork for what was to come.
In 1851, John Reese arrived with horses, cattle, and a dozen wagons brimming with supplies, determined to establish a permanent trading post. By 1852, migrant traffic surged, and Genoa began to expand, becoming a vital stop for travelers heading west.
Carson City: Nevada's State Capital
Next, we go to downtown Carson City, the heart of Nevada's government and history. As we cruise through the streets, we'll visit the impressive Nevada State Capitol building, a stunning example of 19th-century architecture. The Capitol houses the offices of the Governor of Nevada and other key state officials, making it a hub of political activity.
I also explore the Nevada State Museum, where Nevada's rich history comes to life. From exhibits on the Native American tribes who first called this land home to displays on the booming silver mining era, the museum offers a comprehensive look at the state's past. One of the highlights is the Carson City US Mint, which produced coins from 1870 to 1893. The mint's history is a testament to the region's importance during the silver rush.
So, whether you're a history buff or just looking for a scenic ride through some of Nevada's most historic locations, this trip is sure to leave you with a deeper appreciation for the Silver State's rich heritage. Thanks for joining me on this ride through time

Hey, Hey, Hello RVerTV, Russ. Thanks for letting us all pile in and ride along today. YEA 👍
Hey Russ, sorry I rarely comment but I've been watching for years. You've been filling my void to get out West. Live in Madison WI and haven't been there since 1968... yeah too long. Really enjoy your back roads and small towns, actually all of your videos. Thank you.
Only RV channel without the drama. Keep on trucking!
The 395 from Bishop to Lake Tahoe has to be the most beautiful area in the world.
Nice, good information
Great video, I like Carson City, been to that museum there a couple times about 20 years ago, one of one of my favorite museums.
THANKS!
If you get a chance visit Virginia City. Parking is a hit or miss, but the views are spectacular
Such a large country with an endlessly amount of things to see. Thanks for another adventure. School was never this cool.🤗🤗
🕊Safe Travels 🚐
I love the historic
museum 🖼☎️⛽️
🕊Great video's
Russ Thanks🌹
Russ, I was watching for Minden, I must have missed it, dang! The Carson Valley Inn there is a great place
to hang out, got an RV park beside it too.
I was watching for Minden also
GREAT 👍 DAY RUSS 😊
I love your movies, The history of USA, the unbelievable beauty of the country makes me speechless. And your skills in the guidance- wow! Besides being twice I love US and people there. Great.
And I like your sense of humor. Watching you from Australia and wishing you the best
Jan - Ian :)
Love this drive! Going to make it myself in mid-July. Looking at property in Gardnerville.
GOD BLESS - UNITED STATES AMERICA - RUSS - RVerTV FANS. WE LOVE RVerTV - BEST TV ON UA-cam. RUSS - TOO COOL 4 SCHOOL. Thank you Russ.
Live not too far from Geno, love it down there.. enjoy!
395 busy!... Come on Russ people down in L.A. would love a drive like that to work 😊... Safe Travels
I lived in C.C., NV from 79 to 85.
Very cool looking place there in Genoa! Thanks Russ 👍
At the Mormon Station State Historic Park, a friend of mine her great great grandfather John Reese built the original building that the museum was in. That building is a replica of the one he built. He and his brother were merchants in SLC and in on June 1, 1851 came to this area to establish Mormon Station which was the first settlement of present day Nevada. The original Mormon Station buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1910 and the lot stood empty until 1947 when the replicas of Mormon Station was rebuilt. The cameras you use on your van and you hand held are fantastic. So clear and crisp. Plus the mic you use is great. Can hear you perfect. I think the people looking for Bigfoot need you cameras 😂. Also they filmed The Shootist with John Wayne in Reno and area. Washoe Lake State Park was the buggy ride scene. Others were filmed in the historic district of Reno. It’s to bad you didn’t get to Virginia City. Such a fun place. Parking can be hard to find. Would recommend riding the train.
Big fan Russ. Left Southern California in 2021, travelled in RV for almost a year, and now settled in Minden, Nevada. Amazing area. Thanks for covering our amazing area today.
Way to start off the video with a beautiful view, Russ! The drive up 395 has been a great start to the summer adventure. "The inspection station checks for bugs..." -- some people complain about fruit being taken away, but they do an important job. Recently they inspected a truck and found egg cases of spotted lantern flies, a pest we really don't want here in California.
I've driven past the turnoff to Genoa, but never visited...I need to make the short detour next time. I like the story board that explains the origin of the various sayings. Interesting to see the silver displays at the mint/museum. The silver mines were a big reason Lincoln wanted statehood for Nevada, to help finance the civil war. On to Lake Tahoe...happy trails!
YAY!!!!
Yay! Too cool for school
Thanks Russ for the great video. Spent many years in this area was surprised to see the many improvements in Genoa. Thanks again really enjoyed watching 😊
Ahhh yeah!
Fantastic! Keep up the great work 👍
Another fun adventure! Thank you, Russ. Greetings from central Florida.
Genoa is where parts of the Stephen King movie Misery was filmed.
❤ too cool for school thanks for the ride❤
Hey Russ, That Genoa park was very nice. Thanks for sharing!
That's my home town...
😂 My Daughter is a Bartender at the Genoa Bar, there are SO many stories to hear in there! The locals are amazingly friendly and the pictures on the walls of who has all been there etc is SO filled with History!!!
Carson City is very beautiful. I'd like to move there from Las Vegas. So clean and taken care of.
You're in Ponderosa territory :-)
DJI Pocket 3. I have the Pocket 2 and the exposure can be manually adjusted. It does work standalone with a tiny screen but best paired with a smart phone.
I Lived in Reno for many years but My heart was really in carson city and gardenerville!!!n There used to be some wonderful resturants in both cities!! I spent all my time at the carson city DMV after I found out I could go in and there was never a line to stand in!! I would go down there just to renew my drivers lisence and take care of the car registration because in Reno, I would have to stand in line for up to 3 hours and when you work a night shift the last thing you want is to stand in line for 3 even sometimes 4 hours!!! I fell in love with the quaintness of Carson city!! This was over 40 years ago!! I do miss Nevada !!! I really loved the fact that I could go to tahoe and then go to truckee or I could drive up to Susanvillle and then on around to Lake almanor and Chester!!! You are missing out on the beautiful Part of your trip!! Lake Almanor is so beautiful!! And Chester used to be so succluded!! I did lots of driving back in those days just to see the wonderful scenery!!!!! Lake Tahoe, the last time I was there was so over crowded I couldn't even find the cabin I grew up going to each summer with my grandmother !!! I couldn't even find the church I went to way back!! I guess Lake Tahoe just turned into another very well used tourist trap and now it is so spread out that the beauty is gone!!! The lake itself used to be the best part of the trip!! Now you are lucky if you can see the lake throufgh all the homes and apartments and Casinoes!!!! I also lived in Trukee, Ca. But the last time I went there it just wasn't the same!!! My boss was the very first electrician in that intire area and I loved working for him!!! If the weaather was really nice he'd come into the store I managed for him and he would put up the closed sign and then say, grab your fishing gear and he and his wife and I and my kids would head out to what ever lake he felt like fishing and off we'd all go!! I got paid for fishing, can you believe it!??? I had the best boss ever!!!!! Well, by now you are probably Almost to Lake tahoe!! Have a wonderful time if you can see anything wroth will!! I look forward to your next video!! As always, Stay well and stay safe!!!! Vicky who now lives in Michigan!!!!!!!!
Another really great video, Russ. The Genoa storyboard were the most colorful descriptions I have ever seen and lots of birds there. Carson City dollar coins were advertised heavy during the 1980's. I think they are collector item's now. Really enjoyed this visit, Thank you for including your viewers.
love the town of genoa
Love your travels but would prefer more frequent 25 to 30 minute videos like you used to do.
liken the hour long videos😊
All of the different parts the country that u are showing us is so beautiful, places that I have never seen before. Good job.
Another good one. Genoa was new to me. Beautiful. That area looks like it was made for a motorcycle. Haven't been to carson in about fifteen years. I could see the growth. A lot of it coming from the CA bay area in the north. Vegas getting impacted by so-cal. Both ends of the golden state running for it. Sad. Looking forward to the choo-choo museum if you get the chance. It's a good one.
There is a legend with that Snowshoe Thompson. It is said that during a fierce snowstorm coming back from Tahoe he found a vein of gold on one of the mountains. He said he could see he same mountain top from his home but he died afterwards. Every time I’m in the area I am always looking at the mountain peaks wondering which one?
Carson City greatly improved the downtown area and it really came out great. One cannot go wrong visiting that area that’s for sure.
Too bad we missed Genoa! So, thanks Russ for taking us there! We made it to Carson City! I would have loved to see the Pony Express museum!
Watching from New Zealand, interesting getting to see the real Carson City, the only time I have ever seen Carson City previously was a set on Bonanza ... DRAW lol
I have spent the last 7 years working up in that area and it sure is beautiful even in the winter......good people too!!!
Just another great capture of small town, backroads America!
Another video!, another adventure, another great pleasure!!, thank you Russ!! .
This episode was absolutely beautiful. Quite little old town. I really enjoyed it.
Those wagons give a ride no pillow can help.
Carson City is a very interesting place. The Gatling gun was invented in time for the Civil War within 10 miles of where I grew up in a very small town called Voluntown in CT. It is named after the inventor and the family was still local when I was a kid.
😂😂😂
Loving this roadtrip!
You are our favorite tour guide!
A few months ago, we were in Carson and walked down that same street and stood at that same corner, across from the Nugget.
Those cures are hilarious. Can you imagine😂😂
Told my local post mistress about the pony Express when a Christmas card I sent first wk Dec arrived in Jan.
So cool! I'm glad you finally made it to my neck of the woods Genoa is such a jewel and one of my favorite places.
Thanks👍
Here’s to the camera fund Russ! We know you are spending money to travel and produce these. Love this area!
Thank You !!
Hi Russ, Carson City was so clean and beautiful. Enjoyed your video very much !

Hey Russ, watching from Raleigh, Nc, and really enjoy all your videos.
Super cool on the list for our fall travels.
Dig the early morning departures☺️
The movie Charlie Varrick, was filmed in carson valley
You are quite good at filming... I love seeing all the videos...
Kool museum 👍 beautiful views 👍 Thanks for sharing this with us 👍
Thank you
Happy Summer Solstice!
There’s that lunch obsession again lol
Russ, you have a good low light camera. Your AcePro.
Russ you should be in Quartsite right now! It is going to be in the 70s next week!😂
Beautiful drive..
Thank you 👍
Don't forget the Sumpter Dredge state park when your near baker City, Oregon.
Hi Russ, yes, I get the DJI Action 4 camera. I had a Gopro and did not like it, I got the Action 4 and love it. I have a small UA-cam channel and I us it for that. It runs cooler and the battery's last longer. I love the quick disconnect and the sensor is larger so it's perfect for low light. Buy one you want be sorry, happy trails.
🙂👍
The Nevada statehouse is beautiful architecture. Are the domes silver or painted white? Thought they might be silver as silver was the main ore. Park looks like an arboretum. Thank you for taking me on the road with you. Drive safe.
We need some "Heck Yea" , "Look How Flat It Is" and "Too Cool For School" Tshirts!
Some older folks in Dayton could give you an argument on which is older...Genoa vs Dayton. Next time come on Nevada Day.
Russ, try using your cellphone in lowlight conditions. iPhone and Samsung both do excellent jobs. 👍
😊😊
🙋♀️😎❤️
Hey Russ, you showed the Old No 1 Coin Press at the Carson City Mint. It's possible that the most valuable coins in the history of US Coins were created on that mint. The sign said Mint 15 but the coin press itself had a #1 on it. So, that was confusing.
Everything we ever were.....
Watching your vid i have a suggestion. Get rid of the "water" bowl. Adjust a faucet to drip & let your cat drink from that! No more mess from cat knocking over the bowl
Yo I just saw you on the road
Nomadic fanatic said he is going to Sturgis too.
Hey there RVertv..
Love watching your video's. Please tell me something...I have seen someone on utube that looks just like you but he talks with a Mexican accent..is this person you?
Sure looks like you and does all that walking and talking just like you do
yes get yourself a better car horn
you'd think it was a small car coming along
that car horn🤣😂🤣
at 32.52 where skies statue situated .there are purple flowers .is that colitas flower ? can anybody tell me about it ?

@56:16. Nevada is a blue state. YAY!
KOA🎉
Beautiful trip. Thank you so much for making this day the Best day ever 🎉
So Russ it doesn’t look like Carson City has much of a homeless problem?
