As soon as I saw the Sears Tower from your view window, I knew you arrived in my childhood home Chicago. Sorry that you got the old 1970s sleeper room, Amtrak really should have renovated those years ago. Glad you liked the scenery of the western states and your meals.❤️🙏

In "days of old" (pre-Amtrak) you could reserve a sleeper car compartment from NYC's Grand Central Station (via Chicago) all the way to San Francisco. The NYC to Chicago's LaSalle Street Station portion would be via the New York Central's "Lake Shore Limited", then your train car would be shuttled over to Chicago's Union Station. Then continue on to San Francisco.

Thank you for sharing this. Your camera picks up details really well. Some of your shots of the mountains and big cities looked almost 3D. Was wonderful. When I was about 12 years old I rode the train from Detroit Michigan, to Chicago and then into Los Angeles California. On the same Amtrak Trains. This was back in the late 1960s...which goes to show how old our trains are in the U.S. We were in economy seating which worked out fine.

What a great trip, from East Coast to West Coast by Amtrak. Yeah, Lake Shore Limited is the fastest way by train from New York to Chicago via Upstate New York, but if you want more scenic, take the Cardinal. Unfortunately you got the older generation of bedroom, which some part is "beatboxing". Something interesting to see when you boarding the California Zephyr is the train announcement. Rockies area never disappointed, and also it's great to mention all natural landscape around California Zephyr route.

Amtrak's biggest problem, I think, is that its rolling stock is so heavily regulated, that it's effectively custom.
I think I read somewhere that there were once some old Berlin U-Bahn cars that got sold to the Pyongyang Metro. Amtrak can't do that. Even if secondhand rolling stock was good enough for revenue service in, say, Japan, Britain, Germany, take your pick, it can't run on Amtrak...and vice versa.
Congress chucking money at the problem, by itself, won't fix it. Amtrak needs to be given leave to, of all things, make its equipment interoperable with other rail systems, so it's not stuck with a one-of-a-kind fleet that it has no choice but to drive until it croaks.
