woodturning a spurtle

This project video is a tutorial on how to make a spurtle to stir oatmeal or porridge. I show how I make this traditional Scottish kitchen utensil.
I start out with a blank of cherry that is 1" x 1" x 14" long. I mount the blank between centers by feel and turn on the wood lathe. I use a skew chisel instead of a spindle roughing gouge to rough down this blank. A spurtle has a traditional thistle on top that's made to represent the thistle flower. Using just a skew I finish up making this stir stick that is good for eliminating lumps in your oatmeal. The finish is mineral oil and beeswax. I hope you enjoy this how to video!
