- In this video, I explain the history of the spirtle and what it was used for. I make one on the Lathe from start to finish. Not what I usually do, but it can be a quick project. I demonstrate it use in the making of porridge, Steel Cut Oats. At the end there are pictures of fancy ones I have made. Action and information packed video.
Being Scottish I enjoyed this video. Many thanks
This is an absolutely charming video.
Just delightful. Brilliant video.
Beautiful and well done. ❤

You have beautiful hands, and your skill is incredible, thanks for sharing your knowledge!
They are beautiful Brian! You are very talented!
Thanks for sharing Brian I will look for the recipe And make a few of those stir bats all the best from John in Texas
This looks like a great idea. I'll make one for my wife to try. Thanks for the history on this kitchen tool.
Lovely video! I found you while searching for how to use the spurtle that I just received as a gift from Scotland....I had never heard of or seen one before. Yours are GORGEOUS! FYI: mine arrived with a note saying that they are shrouded with myths and legends, the most famous is that you must always stir clockwise and always with your right hand "lest you invoke the devil". OH MY GOODNES!!! LOL
That is very interesting, will remember to do that. That was one of my poorer video's. Thinking of redoing it and not be so rushed. since then I have made better designs and have done some with very interesting colored handle part.
lol, yep I'm here as well from the weebox indulgent kitchen box. I think its probably best used as a weapon to whack hands going for food before meal time.
@@KJ-xx6xr HAHAHAHA! Wee box!
@@paige37914 I know its a hilarious name, but weebox, is subscription box from Scotland. the Box always makes the mailman laugh.
@@KJ-xx6xr Yup--that's what my spurtle arrived in!
Love this, I have been looking for a straight forward project to try using a lathe on
Best example I have ever seen on how not to Wood turn.
I chrecked your Utube out to learn something about wood turning, Looks like you have never done it. Thanks for watching, Check other videos I have made, others liked them allot.
Half the time you were turning from a small diameter to a larger diameter I.e uphill, and therefore tearing the grain. The bevel of the tool should stay in contact with the timber directly behind the cutting edge to get the best results. And yes, I have been woodturning and carving for over 35 years.
@@anthonykinrade8642 Thanks for the reply and tip.. Since then I have made many of them, much better and always do as you say. Guess I just got carried away with trying to do it in a hurry, it certainly did look like a butcher job.. I did go back and watch the video and thought it was my fiddling with the tool rest when it was running. for some reason it would not stay put. You can check out some of my more professionally done wood turning at lumberjocks.com/bushmaster several won awards. Right now I am experimenting with multi axis turning and jigs for threading wood for boxes.
Gee Anthony, you sure can talk the talk, but why don't you show us your walk?
Great vid, those are great for mashing potatoes too, not to mention soups ets, ps I just subed too.
Watch do you make the Spurdle and I really liked the second version the one that you were able to hold between your fingers you did a great job and I was wondering if you sell them and where go to purchase thank you
I would need an email address, I can send pictures of the ones I have on hand.
Great project. I may make one of them. I eat the one minute Quaker oats, but it still needs to be stirred. One question, what kind of wire did you use to make the blackened rings. Thanks
Just cheapo wire I purchased at the dollar store. Small diameter and flexible, I used the corner of a parting too to make a small groove
I have been looking for these. Do you make and ship to Canada? Thank you
I live in canada, B.C. where do you live, give me an email address.
