Fixing Endgame’s Two Worst Characters

  • On this episode of Thor Talk, we’ll look at how one change could drastically improve the two most poorly portrayed characters in Endgame: Thor and Hulk. Endgame sets up a lot for these two characters, but strangely chooses to ignore its own setups in favor of subverting expectations and fan service. This inevitably makes Thor and Hulk the weakest characters in the film, so we’ll see how they could have been improved.

      the best place to go with endgame would have been setting up secret wars 2. and then have phase 4 be secret wars events. the events of secret wars 2 begin with a univerwe dying. it would be cool if the mcu was the universe that died to start secret wars 2. it would explain why thanos was right and the aveng3rs undoing the snap could be part of that

      @Cesar Salcido Dude u clearly don't get it. Thor isn't fit enough to do the snap. Y would Tony just make an arm for Thor when they haven't even decided on which one is doing the snap and they have to do it fast especially since thanos's ship was there right after the snap. And also is that all u want from hulk? SMASH SMASH SMASH. And also, IT IS TONY STARK'SSSSSS JOB TO KILL TH ANUS. So stop acting like endgame revolves around hulk and also if hulk just kills thanos then we wouldn't get to hear Capitan America saying AVENGERS ASSEMBLE and 1 of the most satisfying deaths in cinematic history

      @J Will As a 100% hulk fan myself (and not just because of that fact) end game was shit. I mean... where do I even start? Hulk dabs?!?! Hulk is turned into some sort of beta cuck that doesnt fight? Hulk says he should do the snap because the stones are mostly gamma radiation yet even with that fact and his healing factor somehow this damage is permanent? After captain marvel I knew the sjw influence was going to take over but I had hoped end game would be spared.... I was wrong. Just look at the "girl power" scene where the females pose with each other in battle and meanwhile fat thor is useless and hulk is a gimp with only soy boy chris evans as captain america being a badass. The way they wrote the story made it seem like Thor was after atonement about the snap and Hulk wanted a rematch with Thanos. That was already a big problem. MCU pretty much revolved around Captain America and Iron Man, as well as the chemistry between those two characters, up until the end of Endgame. Thor's film might came before Cap's, but Cap is basically the first Avengers, he shaped it, and everyone in SHIELD have connection with Steve one way or another. Also, I have to remind you that Endgame IS the Avengers movie, and Cap is a de facto mascot of the Avengers.
      Captain America: Civil War is basically what caused the Avengers to be under-prepared for Thanos attack, Steve and Tony were directly responsible for it. If you summarized the whole MCU phases from 1 to 3, Thor played a comparatively small role in the story arc.

      I agree halfway. Because they did de-power Thor. But I don’t really feel like it was done to put the spotlight the girls. But more because they needed to let Cap have his moment since this was his last movie, and if Thor was really given his moment in an Endgame fight, he would most likely have made Cap wielding Mjolnir seem less impressive, by comparison. Giving him the spotlight after Cap picked up Mjolnir, would’ve pretty much made it seem, yes, Cap may indeed have the power of Mjolnir, but he’s still not, and never will be quite on par with Thor, thus severely killing the hyped mood in the audience over Cap reveal of being Worthy.

    Honestly, I think Captain Marvel was the weakest character if only because she was little more than a deus ex machina (although I do like her brief exchange with Peter Parker), but Thor and Hulk were underserved, although I think Thor less so.
    Hulk and Banner needed a chance to have it out for us to see so we could see them reconcile with one another inorder to create a truly better Hulk, World Breaker Hulk perhaps, who can still be smart, but also have the meanness and capacity for targeted destruction that can rough Thanos up a bit before Tony does his thing. The surprise "smart Hulk" was a great scene, and I like the idea, but Banner only really just sippressed Hulk iv a different way, by basicallu hijacking his body. If they were going to do that, we needed to see a watershed moment between Hulk and Bruce for ourselves to give meaning ti what happened. Reconciling Bruce and Hulk should be like Bruce "integrating his shadow" in Jungian terms, coming to terms with his darker, more aggressive side so he can consciously master it and channel it for constructive purposes instead of repressing it and giving it an opportunity to consume you. They should have manifested this by giving us a scene in the heat of the final battle in which Bruce acknowledges he and the Hulk don't have what it takes to fight and win on their own, so they need to work together to beat Thanos. This merging of the two personalities should have created a simultaneously intelligent but aggressive World Breaker Hulk like we see in World War Hulk (minus the thirst for revenge against his allies). The arrival of this apex Hulk could have coincided with Captain Marvel's arrival to signal the turning point of the battle, and he could have smacked Thanos around a bit and helped Carol, Steve and Thor subdue and restrain Thanos so Tony could get the gauntlet and save tue universe.
    I, for one, don't actually have any problem with "fat Thor" being a thing. It's an interesting look at how Thanos's victory in Wakanda uniquely broke his spirit because that is legitimately what can happen to people who become depressed and don't know how to deal with trauna and despair. Their mistake was making too much of a joke of the manifestation of his pain, his uncharacteristic weight. I loved Thor's debut. Fat jokes are low brow, but they can be funny if done right, and his first scene was brilliant at balanacing comedic humor with communicating the fact that Thor is a pitiable shell of his former self. Beyond maybe the one Big Lebowski joke which was at least pretty funny, they shouldn't have kicked him while he was down. That likely wasn't the goal because letting Hemsworth do comedy was, but it belittled Thor's experience. The problem isn't fat Thor existing, and neither was it necessarily others trying to tell Thor to get himself together physically. They made it more of a joke than was appropriate for the kind of story they were trying to tell with him. The shtick arguably overstayed it's welcome. It probably takes a while to build a functioning quantum time machine, so during that time, since Thor is basically useless in that department, we should havr seen some kind of brief Rocky Balboa montage in which he's trying to prepare for the mission in the best way he knows how, by whipping himself into fighting shape. He doesn't have to be in peak form like he was in Infinity War and the beginning of Endgame, but seeing him break down with Rocket and his mother during the mission, a great scene btw, could have been even more poignant because it would have shown the sickness that ails him is psychological, emotional and even spiritual, and it isn't just something that can be fixed by fixing the material body. It takes time to heal from trauma. They were trying to communicate that trauma, pain or even failure don't make you unworthy. They make you human (figuratively in his case), and what matters is how you get back up after getting knocked down, something Freja did a great job of communicating. They really gave Thor a Rocky 2 and especially a Rocky 3 inspired arc, which is yet another reason why a workout training montage would have also been a fitting reference. Making Thor the one to do the snap would have been more fitting. On that, I am totallu on board, and seeing a battered Thor still get up out of the rubble in spite of his injury to trade blows with Thanos alongside Tony and Steve could have been just as cool as duel-wielding Thor. It would have given physical manifestation of the theme of his arc, that pain and failure don't make you any less worthy of a heroic figure so long as you get back up swinging. Giving him an artificial arm at the funeral would have also been a cool tease of things to come as well.
    I still love Endgame, and i do appreciate the intent behind whay was done with Thor and Hulk. It was just a flawed execution. As disappointing as that is, I can forgive it because at least the foundation of great ideas were still there. They may have stumbled past the finish line with those two, but the rest of the movie was still great. I can forgive dropping two balls when they were basically trying to juggle 20 at once.

    Overall, I'm left unsatisfied and very much disappointed over how Thor and Hulk have been treated in the MCU but the way they were treated in Endgame was the fatal blow. I agree with the sentiment of some of us here and felt that these two were sacrificed in favour of Cap and Shell Head.
    While Iron Man and Cap were my favourite Avengers growing up as a child, Thor was the one I grew to respect as a teenager and now as an Adult because of my interest in the age of gods and mythology. Banner was one I sympathize with because I could relate to the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tale because of how I was (and sometimes still am) treated by my peers.
    You have two of the most powerful and respected members of the Avengers relegated to being the butt of jokes with forced arcs to give them a forced feeling of relevance.
    Because of this I have ZERO confidence in what they have in store for Thor especially with what they have revealed about his fourth movie so far.
    As for Hulk, I didn't really like how his character has been treated since after his last solo movie from 2008. The Hulk persona went from being a loose cannon/force of nature that was a wildcard among his peers, to a joke.
    At the rate were going I fear what they have in mind for Beta Ray Bill, Norin Radd, Reed Richards and his family, and Victor Von Doom.

    Actually, you've said all the same things I said after the film. We saw Thor survive the force of a neutron star, surely a snap wouldn't kill him. In any case, I didn't mind the fat Thor thing. I thought the moment he recovered Mjolnir should have been his turning point. That line, "I'm still worthy!" should have MEANT something.
    Similarly, I agree that Hulk never got to be HULK in this. Having Hulk and Banner together against Thanos at some point would have been very cool, where the two personas kind of work together.
    I still say I'd have liked seeing Thor do some real Storm God stuff, though. Right before fighting Thanos, he holds out his arms and the clouds roll in, thunder cracks, and lightning plays across the clouds and then over his body, changing to his armour... but then it all goes away. No more storm, no more thunder, no more lightning. Indeed, Captain America did Thor better than Thor, actually hitting Thanos a few times, AND calling lightning down on him. I wanted to see some more THUNDER.

      In the first Avengers movie Banner says his secret is that he's always angry. Hulk is pretty much the personification, the physical manifestation of Banner's rage. And he's got a lot of rage.
      Which then disappears for no reason never to be seen again.
      Sorry, but I just don't buy the notion that Banner and Hulk have "come to an understanding" allowing Banner full control over his Hulkness while retaining absolutely none of the rage that makes him Hulk out. Being able to manifest enough anger to remain in Hulk form (maybe demonstrated by Prof. Hulk being a bit crabby) while also letting the old-school Hulk rage come out when necessary - but guided by Banner's intellect - a more focused rage rather than wanton destruction seems like a more natural resolution to integrating both of Banner's personalities. But the Russos don't give a shit about Hulk or Thor, couldn't be bothered to show either of them even a shred of respect, and End Game is what we wound up with.
      That's why turning Thor into a sloppy drunken oaf is just so irritating. It's very much not how Thor would react. He's not the kind of guy who'd indulge in a 5 year long pity party. He's the kind of guy that'd spend those 5 years finding bad guys to beat the shit out of. Unless, of course, the Russos just can't be bothered to do anything with the character and need a reason to ignore him as much as possible while the two characters they do care about get to dominate the movie.
      Sure, the Russos spent several movies on Cap, and spent a lot of time with Stark as well. So I understand their partiality to those characters. But this isn't Civil War Part Deux. If you want Cap to have his moment to shine in a mano-a-mano against Thanos, maybe have Thanos' minions keep Thor busy - and keep his Thanos-killing hammer away from Thanos - while Cap and Thanos duke it out. But yeah, sure, have Thanos effortlessly beat the snot out of Thor (while easily wielding Stormbreaker against Thor) because that makes no sense. Would have been amusing to see Thanos try and fail to pull the same stunt on Mjolnir, though.

In the face of Thanos, pretty much no major characters died. We can pick apart the movie scene by scene but the story would have been better if there was a bigger impact on the audience.
      The film would have been helped out tremendously if we actually cared about Thanos's side kicks. Imagine if he was teamed up with Hela all along. How I imagined Hulk story would go:
    1. Hulk would still do the reverse snap
    2. His balance between Hulk and Banner, as hinted throughout the movie, would be a facade. Hulk would have hidden himself while leaving Banner with control of his body.
    3. Banner would feel guilt, knowing that he had essentially sent Hulk, a person, to prison and maybe even death since he hadn't heard from him.
    4. When banner snaps his fingers or acquires the soul stone, the issue is resolved and only one of them remains (Hulk). Through the soul stone or while acquiring it, Hulk is shown and Banner is for the first time ever able to actually talk with Hulk.
    5. Banner, knows he will be near useless for whatever is coming next (plot or just story wise who actually cares about banner as he is) and that the only thing that he can do to help Hulk understand that he is sorry and convince him to help, is to die (I mean what is Banner going to do in future movies?)and give Hulk full control.
    6. Hulk is free to fight, grow, and learn.
    7. He may not be able to 1v1 thanos but he fights with greater focus and trying to coordinate with another Avenger in the fight.
    It's all rough but I really thought they would use the soul stone to resolve that issue. I mean they had established Hulk as his own person, who could carry a story when paired with another character and Banner I think had played his part in the story, no movie that is coming up next is called "Banner".

    Yeah! What a totally crazy arc for Thor! His father’s dead, his mother’s dead, his brother’s dead, Asgard is dead, he failed to stop Thanos’ snap. I mean why should he be a depressed alcoholic? He should have been doing 1000s of push-ups a day, preparing his macho self for the inevitable showdown between himself and Thanos, knowing that Tony Stark would eventually solve time travel five years later so he could have his chance.
    On a more serious note. It’s clear, that this movie was more of an ending for Iron Man and Captain America’s stories. We will see more of Thor and Hulk in the future MCU.

    i think their endings make sense given their arcs tbh. Banner was struggling to work with the Hulk, who he saw as violent and desolating. Banner was awkward and not confident in himself, and the Hulk was much the same. The Hulk also felt like Earth hated him, which is why he left Earth at the end of Ultron. Instead, they became one person and became calmer, thoughtful, more confident in themselves as a unit. Instead of engaging in destruction, we see Professor Hulk get to do the ultimate act of creation and restoration. It’s not a dramatic arc, but I don’t think it has to be.
    Thor’s is also anticlimactic, but here you’re missing something-you’re writing up an ending about what Thor himself would think he has to be, and we even see this when they prep the gauntlet-he wants it to be himself because he thinks it’ll be the one good thing he could do, that he has to do it to make up for his failure. But why would he do that if it might kill him, as opposed to Hulk? He stopped being who he was supposed to be and just let himself fit in where he should fit in. He started being who he was, just like his mom told him he should, and like he acknowledged at the end of the movie. I think this is a fun subversion and says something about where Thor is now. You don’t have to do something big and dramatic to make up for failures. You just have go accept you failed and make up for it in the way you physically can.

  • @FearedAudacity
    @FearedAudacity 5 років тому

    How I would change things;
    Thor snaps to undo his biggest regret. He is left one armed and retires at the end of the movie and leaves Valkyrie temporarily in charge while he recovers.
    Hulk and Banner fight in the final battle so they contribute after not doing anything of note for IW after 10 minutes. Hulk rematches Thanos and puts on a solid showing but is still ultimately beaten by Thanos and loses an arm, but he makes Thanos bleed, breaks some armour forces him to work hard for victory. He goes on to try and restrain Thanos with Worthy Captain America one-armed at the last but are both power punched away.
    Tony doesn’t create a gauntlet. Thor & Rocket are tasked from getting it on Nivadellir during 2018 and agree to do so with Eitri.
    Thor is not a blubbering embarrassment. He is instead heartfelt and raw like he was when he spoke with Rocket on the way to Nivadellir in Infinity War. His reunion with his mum is tear jerking, not awkward.
    Thor is not fuelled by alcohol when he agrees to join them. Instead he is desperate to fix his biggest mistake
    Captain Marvel is knocked unconscious by the van explosion, and her one-on-one is replaced by an earlier fight with Hulk. Her main feats are destroying Sanctuary II and clearing most of the battlefield but she has no business fighting Thanos directly.
    Drax also gets a shot at Thanos working alongside the remaining Guardians but instead of rushing in head first works under StarLords leadership in trying to restrain Thanos. Before Thanos can kill Drax, Hulk punches Thanos away.
    There is no Old Captain America at the end. Instead Cap simply doesn’t return and rather leaves a note found in Buckys pocket.
    Bucky reads the note declaring Bucky as Steve’s successor, but he knows he will never be worthy of the shield. It is Bucky who gives the shield to Falcon.

    So, so damn true. I said this the second I saw them have Credible Hulk snap and again when they then had fat Thor get whooped by Thanos rather than allowing the Hulk a proper rematch and Thor to redeem himself and snap. Perhaps the single biggest mistake in what is already a mess of a movie.
    I always said as well that when Thor should have snapped, he also should have seen Loki in the soul stone for one last reunion.
    1) Thor should have been allowed to redeem himself and snap everyone back, undoing the final catalyst for his 5 years of guilt, depression and alcoholism (people say he wasn't in the right mental state but I find that silly as he's a 1500 year old God, it was narratively his moment and giving it to the Credible Hulk instead of Thor was as much of a tailspin away from his actual arc ending - from Infinity War to Endgame - as giving Arya all the involvement in the Night King's death and having none of it to do with Jon Snow).
    2) When he's then with Valkryie on the cliff, they should have had Thor smile, Valkryie say 'You've changed, you seem happy, I'm glad after the years took their toll on you' (or something not so wooden but you get my point).
    3) Thor says nothing but continues to smile, where it cuts to a memory of Thor post snap in the Soul Stone where he sees Loki - Just as Thanos saw kid Gamora, and the writers confirmed they had filmed Tony seeing his daughter grown up so it doesn't have to be only if they were sacrificed on Vormir - and they silently walk up to each other, hug (like we wanted them to in Ragnarok's ending) and Loki says 'I assured you brother, the sun would shine on us again'.
    4) Scene carries on as normal and Thor goes with the Guardians.

    Great points and video as always Thor Talk!!!!
    Endgame was just a massive disappointment for me with what they did to Thor!!!!
    It was a awful portrayal of Thor and for me didn’t fit his character. Thor would always be ready to kick ass and never be afraid.
    With Mjolnir and Stormbreaker together he should’ve been unstoppable!!!!
    Despite the title of Thor 4 I truly hope that Thor is returned to the true God he is and reclaimed his place as the strongest and most powerful avenger!!!!

A God is obviously a far superior being and I’m sure with Thor being 1500 years old he’d gone through plenty of hardships and was a toughened up warrior and not a bubbling mess through pretty much the whole film as they made him.

    Replace Captain Marvel fighting Thanos with Hulk. He locks hands with the Mad Titan, preventing him from snapping. Thanos beats him with the other hand mercilessly, to the point that Hulk is battered, bloodied and brought to his knees. He won’t let go of Thanos though. Thanos looks at him, and asks him “haven’t you had enough?” We hear A mix of Banner and Hulk talk, “No. You made me angry.” He starts to get up, eyes glowing green, and Thanos starts hitting him but the punches go unfazed. Hulk catches his other hand and they are locked in a standstill. Thanos unable to use the gauntlet, Hulk oozing gamma radiation from his body clenches the Mad titans hands, definitely breaking some bones. Thanos goes for the power stone like his did against Danvers. Hulk catches that hand before he can use it. Energy coming from both the stone and Hulks body surrounds them and builds up like a nuclear blast until it sends them both flying.

    My ideal continuation of Infinity War (my favourite movie from MCU) is:
    - Thor goes crazy after what happened and travels the cosmos (with Stormbreaker or some other device) in search for vengeance, turning himself into a shell of his former self: EVIL, hateful and only wanting to fight to KILL;
    - also, during this arc, he speaks little, to show how he is becoming something like an animal, as he is seen fighting in some gladiatorial combat and stuff like these;
    - Hulk, on the other hand, starts the same way of Endgame, but with some real depression;
    - the Avengers go searching for Thor in order to start the mission and they calm him down with talking (Steve stuff) and fighting (Hulk stuff);
    - during his mission, Thor speaks with Odin, and it's his wisdom (not the love from his mother) that pushes him in doing the right thing;
    - ultimately, Thor go greet Thanos (the past one), fighting him one on one (and doing some real damage) when Hulk snaps;
    - in the end, the battle goes as we know;

    For Hulk how I would’ve made it after the snap, Banner runs into Natasha in the soul world and they talk, basically makes peace with her death and she tells him to keep fighting (she could mention the actual Hulk just to show that the Hulk is still part of him) the Hulk inside Banner kinda awakens again cuz it seems like Hulk did have something for Natasha (she had a wake of calming him down like how Betty did in the mcu/comics so that means something imo) but doesn’t come to terms with her death, so now that Banner has been exposed to some gamma from the infinity stones it could’ve triggered the gamma in Hulk to overload and he can come out with a power boost via WorldbreakerHulk and he could come out when needed like let’s say the final battle. I would’ve also liked him fighting Thanos when they were trying to stop him from using the gauntlet for the snap, but instead of Captain Marvel it could’ve been swapped out with WorldbreakerHulk and it would’ve been a rematch between the both of them. It could’ve been WorldbreakerHulk VS PowerStone Thanos, both of them throwing blows just to show how powerful the Hulk is and the strongest one their is. And after the fight Hulk reverts to Professor Hulk having some sort of codependency (Banner&Hulk/one cannot live without the other)

    agreed 100%. I honestly don't think it was a coincidence that the two most powerful heroes on the team were reduced to goofy comic relief, while Captain Marvel was made to look almost unstoppable. Sending subtle hints that traditional powerful male heroes characters like Thor and Hulk are something they want to move away from. Thor didn't need to be broken again, he made his big comeback on the battlefield in Wakanda, stripping him down again was pointless and for a film that sold itself on "fan service" not giving them us a rematch with Thanos and Hulk was of the greatest missed chances in all of the MCU.

    The point is not for Thor to redeem his failures in previous movies, it's that he finally can accept and live with his failures, despite all the people who have suffered because of them. When he gives up the throne for good, the point is that he learnt that he doesn't have to fix everything for everyone, and should be comfortable being flawed, despite being an uber powerful god who's lived thousands of years as royalty.

    Thor being Asgardian, he would have had a better chance than Hulk with the gauntlet, imo. And even if it did the same level of damage to his arm, this would just justify thor having a metal arm in future movies, just like the comics. Whats worse is that Hulk is supposed to have one of the craziest healing factors. In a spin off, old Hulk could be digested by giant roaches and heal from that. Banner died and the Hulk lived on. Even worse, the Hulk's half of the fused personality should have had an impact on the decision making to risk giving up fighting. Or hey, maybe that healing factor I mentioned earlier? Ok so the arm wont heal... Hulk should be able to rip off his own arm and regrow a new one. That's literally how powerful his healing was supposed to be. They did these two characters so dirty

  • @urayoanruiz6780

    Banner survives the snap thanks to the Hulk thats his arc. In avengers 1 Bruce and Tony talk about how the Hulk saved Bruce Banners life by protecting him from the gamma radiation but Bruce is in denial that The Hulk is gift to help humanity and he sees it more as a curse. Thats until Endgame when he realizes that the cure to his problems was to accept the Hulk as a part of him and thats when they merge into one finally being able to control it without being angry and saving the world that once hated him. The Hulk saved humanity by protecting Banners life twice. Hulk hated Banner and Banner hated Hulk but they still protected one another and even though the world wanted to kill them ever since Incredible Hulk they still did the right thing and proved themselves as Avengers both Hulk and Banner. Not just Banner or Hulk separated but together. Banner said it himself he was made to snap his fingers because he was the only one who could survive the gamma radiation. Hulk’s enemy was never meant to be Thanos. Hulk is Banners protector without him realizing it and they can’t coexist without each other once they accepted that they were able to gain Earth’s acceptance and redeemed all the destruction they both caused in Age of Ultron and Avengers 1.
