Three VERY Useful Backwoods Knots

- Come along as Lonnie shows how to tie three different but very useful knots. These knots are especially useful to the camper or bushcrafter. Lonnie will demonstrate the Kalmyk Loop, the Farrimond Hitch and the Canadian Jam knot or Arbor knot. Lonnie walks you through tying each one of the knots. Lonnie, Knots are "one of my things". I know a lot of them, some more useful than others, but I have never seen any of these three. Good video, thank you for showing these. I will use these!

I use these knots a lot,
A lot of knots ,
Not to be forgot,
But a knot Not tied right,
Is not a good Knot.
At night when it snows and the wind does blow,
A bad knot will loose and cover you in snow.
A good knot is a friend and aids restful sleep,
secure in the knowledge that it won't creep!

I'm definitely going to start using that one for tying things up. That knot should be taught instead of the square knot.

I have the worst luck wrapping up my cordage. Ends up being a ball of knots most of the time. The solution I found was to wrap it in a figure eight before making the outside wraps to bind it together. It pays out smoothly and doesn't knot up on me.
Wow, Lonnie. Two of your three knots were new to me which I thought was near impossible as useful knots go. Both of the first pair are easy to tie and undo. I've used the Canadian jam knot for a long time.and find it very useful. Thanks so much.
I store my cordage almost the exact same way! The only exception is that sometimes I alternate the loops, rather than wind around my hand (this is just to avoid adding twist, as I'm more accustomed to working with cables).
Wrapping around your hand or elbow is definitely faster though.

That was interesting, that Canadian Jam Knot demo was better than others I've seen, I was able to actually see how it goes. Thanks, Lonnie.
Most excellent presentation! I've always stopped my ropes the way you showed but would always unwind the wraps around the bundle and then struggle with the tangle, I never realized you could pull it out from the end. I've tried it again and again and it always works. I had to lasso a drowning dog in the Highline Canal near Spanish Fork Utah and had to unwind the wraps, untangle the Paracord, and tie a bowline for a noose. I saved him but had to run along the Canal with three beagles in tow. I wish I would have known this trick before! Also, the Kalmyk loop is amazing, I've been practicing this again and again. I can tie it but don't yet understand it. I love the Canadian Jam Knot which I learned last year and use it all the time now - so handy! And the Ferrimond Hitch works so much better than the taught line hitch. Thanks for a great presentation!

Knowing different knots is soooo useful! I hope your summer has been cooler than here in Seward lately. We have been in the 70's. which would be nice if it didnt make my office 84! :) thanks for all the helpful tips!
It has been quite warm here lately, just like summer. Interesting weather. We had a very wet early Fall here which caused some rivers to reach record levels for this time of year.

Farrimond hitch is probably my most used knot when setting up a tarp or tent. I even removed the tensioning toggles from my tent guy lines just to use the Farrimond by preference.

That Canadian jam knot is as useful as it’s simple, one of the most helpful I’ve seen.

These knots here along with the other knot video mentioned and linked to in this video will give you a good strong arsenal of very useful knots that can do just about everything needing done in a camp or bushcraft outing.
Lonnie, over the years of watching and sometimes commenting on your videos, I have come to respect you for many reasons. As I was watching this video, I was thinking how much knowledge you have; however, saying that, I must say that the first two knots are just too complicated for the weekend or armchair bushcrafter. in real life, it doesn't matter if you know as many knots as a seventeenth century sailor, there are really only about five, maybe seven knots anyone in the woods needs to know. The Canadian Jam knot is one of them, in my opinion. I like the uncomplicated way you wrap the cordage also. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

I'm a lefty & the instructions are always for rightys.
Learning knots is sometimes a head scratcher.

Good video. I like the Siberian hitch it’s similar to the first one you showed. I like it for tieoffs for quick release
The Siberian or Evenk knot is tied in a similar fashion as the Kalmyk loop but the Siberian hitch slips to tighten up against whatever it is tied around. The Kalmyk however will stay put where ever it is tied. So tied in a similar way but much different outcome.

I like those three knots and is glad you showed us how to tie them. In my backpack is cordage which I can use to put up my tarp, and use for climbing and other uses as well. I will have to come back and view the video once more to be sure that I know what I am doing before going camping.
