I traded a 1978 Exciter for this same sled. Wish I kept the Exciter. The SS had a plastic cowl, the sled was nice looking. Rode nice and handled ok. 50 hp belt driven fan cooled motor. Never got stuck so much as I did with this sled. Some recommended jetting, never got to it. Just didn't have low end power. Following season traded for a 1980 SRX. Still have. There all worth saving. Have fun and good luck, looks like you have a few issues to work out. I'll be watching how you progress and maybe the test ride this season for your evaluation.
I had an 81 SS, it was dialed in better. Broke trails 2’ deep powder, 8’ drifts- no problem. Buddy had a 79 exciter, 81 SS was faster. 80 SS wasn’t as dialed in
Hey there! Awesome videos! I have this exact sled and am looking for a rear skid/ track and suspension for it. If you have any leads or suggestions I'd appreciate it! Will be following your videos for ideas on restoring and reviving my sled! Love your vids!
Nice! First sled I ever owned was a '80 ss440. The best looking year IMHO. Besides the handle bar pad, I believe the track and a few other things were specific to that year only. I believe that year also had a recall.
I remember going to a winter fest on some lake in Michigan. My Dad had just got his 1980 Exciter. They had a beer tent pick up drags ect. Well my Brother was riding his Intruder I was riding our old Olympic 340 and my oldest Brother was on Dads Exciter. Anyways I remember a red SS 440 and wanted to go up against Dads Exciter. My brother chewed him up on Exciter. Does anyone know what the numbers are for each of the sleds? Oh yeah a guy had a SRX the black one and he was wasting everything there! Good ole days!!
Nice video. My brother had one of those back in the day and I had an '83 ss440 back then. They were go to us.
They are a great sled. I really enjoy riding mine!
Sweet!!.... I'm always checking my local Craigslist for well kept SS440 or SRV.
Love these videos! Looking forward to watching your progress.
Keep the videos coming, love this kind of stuff.

Haha yeah these first year ss440s had a lot of issues. Mostly in the rear skid/track. Huge recall for Yamaha.
Should have been careful with that carb, that was the king of snow machines back in the early 80s.
Ooooooh yayyy
Do you have any pictures of how you re-mounted the wiring clip board on the 250 after doing the mikuni swap?
