Derek Roddy, in my opinion the best in metal & blastbeats.. Noone beats his speed and his metal chops are just amazing.. Enjoy!! Please Rate, Comment, And Subscribe! :D
Great heel roll that every death metal drummer duplicates these days able to get 32nd Double-bass notes. It's a cool technique that makes trigger drummers look weak. No cheating here. This dude is sick. Tight blast & off beats.
@aileanwazere Hmmmm.. I'm unaware of such a thing LOL. And yes, sorry to all for my loose tongue.. I do respect Joey Jordison, and all other drummers. They are very talented people.. probably more then many drummers will ever be.
And if you observe carefully, he does lots of metal grooves, fills, that are just delicious. So if u say all he does is speed, you must be blind my friend.
@aileanwazere checked out the ones you said, and i don't really know what you mean by "riding the hihat", but all i heard was opening the hi-hat in sync with the guitar. i can do that too. and the beat on liberate was just a standard pattern, without dynamics at all. playing funky and grooving is about dynamics.
@Kudan26 Duude... Speed is always good, but if speed is everything you do, then that's an issue. If you look up some other vids of Derek Roddy, he actually does groove and jams.. This is just his Genre. U have to respect this guy.. he has real chops and amazing talent. Unlike some people like Joey or Lars etc etc..
@Tonyr67 Yes it matters, it's what's important for the style he plays. And don't say speed does not matter, tell that to Dave Weckls wrists and Dani Gottlieb's cymbalwork. And even Billy Cobham writes work in the most basic rythm patterns.
@ursuletzzzz How is it same? Everyone has double bass and a thousand cymbals. Chris Adler doesn't have 3 toms on the front and especially not like that, he doesn't have a floor tom nor a second snare on the left. Also he has his snare on a rather steep angle. No offense or anything.
Derek has Groove, I personally do not hear the groove in George Kolias, yes Kolias is fast but Derek blows him away in speed and groove imo. Speed is not everything, But Derek has Groove and you cannot beat groove in fast metal.
i was passing through here and i like to say that i guess derek roddy has combinations in low frequencies of sound touched with correct volume obviusly and some of that creativity musician has to has with the drumkit. It looks like "medium size" compared to all the others, i guess Derek has like 4 crashes (0), 2 rides(-) and 2 splashes(+) that are silently compared to others. Also he has the kit in an original position to touch third and fourth tom more usually. One bass drum that helps...
@JOEtheHOTTIE Thats complete bollocks. Thats the thing about Derek, he isnt just speed, he does all those odd times and some of his fills are totally unique and complex.
@JOEtheHOTTIE listen to sons of darkness by hate eternal. the intro doesn't have any bars of 4 i believe. also, faceless one by hate eternal is completely in 6/4
If you don't think this isn't really intricate drumming then your just insane. Its death metal drumming with some pretty bad ass groovy fills & sections. Some of it (the intricate groovy fast fills) is even reminiscent of Dennis Chambers, arguably one of the top 10 drummers in the world. Go watch some of Mr. Chambers' vids & tell me he ain't that great either.
Well,it's all about personal preference.I mean i dislike both of the bands you've mentioned but few of my friends like them.I mean,i really hate their music but no need to hate their fans.To each his own.I'll just stay on Death and everyone will be fine-no one will hate me,and it will be good for all of us.Cheers!
Well, Francesco Paoli is faster, technically. Roddy said he tops out at around 285, I believe, Paoli has a song with a blast beat at 300. BUT. I do prefer Roddy, he's much more diverse, and manages to groove with the metal pretty well. Awesome drummer :)
@Kudan26 Oh yeah, brother. All these people are definitely right. Watch his audition with Dream Theater. If he can stand in with some of the GREATEST DRUMMERS ON EARTH, after he got invited by DREAM THEATER to possibly replace MIKE PORTNOY, we're not talking just speed. In fact, he fell in love with metal last out of the genres of music he can play. Unfortunately, his metal stuff is all you see on UA-cam.
i saw a video of him doing jazz on youtube. type in derrick roddy doing jazz. there's no triggers in the video. he's at a music shop. he doesn't swing right. there lacks the feel and it sounds very mechanical. swing must have this Swing feel of the playing and the touch must be there. just take a look and you'll know what i mean. compare that to typing in kiko freitas jazz practice
@flabbergastmau ..ok, that was actualy funny, i said knowing him means nothing, your right. are you endorsed?..most people say hes good, y the hate?..i prefer cheery pie anyways, and im no fool, but thanx for the lolz
@flabbergastmau You are so right! Metalheads seems to think that you're the best if you are fast! There are some great drummers in metal, ofcourse... And this guy is quite a good drummer also, he doesn't suck actually. But where's the feel and the groove. Does this guy even heard about gostnotes??? It's all 2 against 2, 4 against 2, basic stuff really.....
@Tonyr67 Yeah, basic..give me a call when you nail those blastbeats. Most metal drummers do not need ghost notes, they just need to be solid and get the perfect stroke, ghost notes among the rest of the band's mayhem would hardly be heard so why bother? Few metal drummers play with many ghost notes, and those are mostly into prog metal. And btw, Teddy Campbell does not play metal and is not really fond of ghostnotes, but check him out and you'll see they are not always necessary
i think metal has changed. If you like the change or not, i think that's personal taste. I started with the new stufff like killswitch engage, chimaira, machine head, trivium, august burns red, Between the buried and me etc.i don't like the old kind of metal, i dont like the sound and the playstyle. But thats just personal preference.you're right, we got to know the roots, and i respect bands like metallica or slayer for what they have done for the metal genre, but i just dont like their music.
Oh, well I do prefer the original styles more, but I do listen to new styles of metal, as well. One could say that I study the entire metal genre. I don't hate any form of metal, but I do strongly dislike certain kinds, most of which came into existence in the late 90s and after 2000. I do my best not to be close-minded, but I don't like when someone starts with the new stuff, and refuses to know what it came from. :/
no need for being so aggressive? be privileged that the uploader has put this up. Derek says he is an ''extreme metal drummer" by the way, just enjoy the video
@slashdelbarrio What I really said, was: The parts in this drumtrack are pretty basic stuff. 4 against 2, really, that's all... I never said, he sucks... He does pretty amazing stuff, except for the blastbeats..... You mentioned Dave Weckle.... This guy is from a complete other level as Derek Roddy....
@octopickel LOL FAIL i never said Derek Roddy was metalcore, i was replying to another person who said that, i know derek roddy is fckin death metal! \M/
Derek is amazing and his blast beats are incredible!!!
What I love about Derek is he is so freaking technical, but he doesn't show it very often in his main project.
Derek Roddy has played on 2 of my fav Hate Eternal Albums, this guy is a God among Men.
he is the steve vai of drumms ....not human i worked with him at mars music and was blown away great guy and truly blesse3d
Derek is really killer. Great technique. Clean with nice off beat in there. I dig it.
Awesome, if ii could like this many more times I would!
Derek is an all-round drummer, check his history. He is one of the drum gods
derek you fkn rock....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My rumbo a seguir esta en la motivasion k me proboca este gran baterista
Right ON!!!
God of Metalcore??? WTF
HAHAHAHA! WTF?
+meic wineheart hy

Crazy!
i saw him live in october :DD
the best in blastbeats!
i will be seeing derek roddy at a clinic next week!!
@aileanwazere Hmmmm.. I'm unaware of such a thing LOL.
And yes, sorry to all for my loose tongue..
I do respect Joey Jordison, and all other drummers. They are very talented people.. probably more then many drummers will ever be.
i worked with him at mars music..no one in my opinion plays like him...he is the steve vai of drums
Pretty Impressive.
in my oppinion he iis the best percussionists alive today
finally a video to see his hair moving...!!
And if you observe carefully, he does lots of metal grooves, fills, that are just delicious. So if u say all he does is speed, you must be blind my friend.
HEll Yeah !!!
Holy Shit!!!!
"Derek Roddy: God of Metalcore" - You wanna take this outside mate?
@aileanwazere checked out the ones you said, and i don't really know what you mean by "riding the hihat", but all i heard was opening the hi-hat in sync with the guitar. i can do that too. and the beat on liberate was just a standard pattern, without dynamics at all. playing funky and grooving is about dynamics.

god of metalcore? never been in a single metalcore band!
back track sounds like Behemoth. epic drummer.
Every song is a drum solo...
Have I seen it right? Does he split is set in the middle so each side is some kind of a mirror like Gene Hoglan does with his?
@Tonyr67 Yes it matters, it's what's important for the style he plays. And don't say speed does not matter, tell that to Dave Weckls wrists and Dani Gottlieb's cymbalwork. And even Billy Cobham writes work in the most basic rythm patterns.

@aileanwazere I'm not hating. I'm just quite upset over people over-rating drummers just cause they're popular.
@Livingcorpse8 you're right, i laughed my ass off when i saw the ''metalcore'' part in the beginning! :P
Derek has Groove, I personally do not hear the groove in George Kolias, yes Kolias is fast but Derek blows him away in speed and groove imo. Speed is not everything, But Derek has Groove and you cannot beat groove in fast metal.
you think Derek has groove?
Absolutely.

I was going to type that LOL
@JOEtheHOTTIE Thats complete bollocks. Thats the thing about Derek, he isnt just speed, he does all those odd times and some of his fills are totally unique and complex.

@SirAlaska your exactly right..hes fking insane at jazz too...:)
When did a by-the-book death metal Riff became a "metalcore' something???? What did we do so wrong?
awesome from 1:16
@aileanwazere i'm not talking about hard, my question was : can he groove?
He's a lot more than a HM drummer , can't you hear it ? Lot of groove in here ...

@nestornicolas1 y usted está seguro acerca de esto?
@Tonyr67 not every music is supposed to "groove"...
best metal drummers IMO gene hoglan chris adler derek roddy lombardo paul bostaph and john tempesta
LOL GOD OF METALCORE xD
What song is that he's playing with?
What's the name of the song???
Dude....have u heard of Geroge Kollias...?Nile...?
@Kudan26 Oh yeah, brother. All these people are definitely right. Watch his audition with Dream Theater. How come all metal heads always argue about what type of metal something is? Can't we just fucking settle down.
i saw a video of him doing jazz on youtube. type in derrick roddy doing jazz. there's no triggers in the video. he's at a music shop. he doesn't swing right. there lacks the feel and it sounds very mechanical. swing must have this Swing feel of the playing and the touch must be there. just take a look and you'll know what i mean. compare that to typing in kiko freitas jazz practice
it wasnt a test, it was an audition...
@slashdelbarrio
Dude, it doesn't matter how fast he is or how fast blastbeats are....
It really is musically basic stuff!
Foot Cam 2:01 OMFG.
@aileanwazere can you give me a link to joey grooving?
Haha, I wouldn't exactly call Hate Eternal "metalcore", but whatever you say, Internet video :D
@flabbergastmau ..ok, that was actualy funny, i said knowing him means nothing, your right. are you endorsed?..most people say hes good, y the hate?..i prefer cheery pie anyways, and im no fool, but thanx for the lolz
I was only answering the question... o.o
@flabbergastmau

@Villex93 never said it was the same.. read carefuly.."kinda' looks like".. see? not the same

metalcore..
To lead the ones lost in the wanna-be modern realm into the promised land of true metal!
no need for being so aggressive? be privileged that the uploader has put this up. Derek says he is an ''extreme metal drummer" by the way, just enjoy the video
I know this is getting old but...... METALCORE??
not w dw anymore?
He switched from Sonor to DW. This was before the switch.
i didnt know Weird Al was a drummer
Even though Derek describes himself as neither of those, but an extreme metal drummer instead?
@flosscal1: oh yeah, that's a great argument, "you know the guy" and even personally.....wow, yeah well ehm well you know it's like ehm.....
@1:49 Derek Roddy "I'll F***ing kill you mothertruckin cymbals"
@slashdelbarrio
What I really said, was:

@octopickel LOL FAIL i never said Derek Roddy was metalcore, i was replying to another person who said that, i know derek roddy is fckin death metal! \M/
look for Nile and George Kollias ...
difference is of course that death metal is good
@101point5TMG nope not thrash bro...... :p this is its own genre definately nothing thrashy about this tho
Uhh... Derek Roddy is a death metal/ jazz fusion player. Though he could own the shit out of some metalcore if he wished to stoop to such levels.
Why? Why does it say metalcore..??
Hes a Drummer!!! Does it really matter what kind...jeez.
metalcore???? i don't wanna live in this planet anymore
I've never really liked any of the bands he was in... He's sick tho.
true metal ? ;))
God of metalcore? XDDD
Okay, but it really doesnt matter... People get angry over the stupidest stuff
and I'm a musician...
