- We head to the East Coast (yes, anything east of Big Bend National Park in my book is 'The East Coast', I don't care, y'all have too much water and too many trees, might as well be another planet...) and find ourselves in Texas for the Great Solar Eclipse of 2024 and what would a Big Diehl vacation be without a train trip. We find ourselves riding the rails of the Texas State Railroad (not lineside, if you'd actually like to catch this locomotive on this day I was here, check out @aaronmccreight_trains-tractor 's channel and video of this event... AFTER you've watched, and liked this one). We are drawn out by the wail of another Arizonan in exile, Magma Arizona # 7, disguised here as the Texas State Railroad No. 400, a dress she's worn on and off since leaving the famed Superior Arizona copper hauling shortline (and after starting at the Tremont and Gulf as their 30). We jump along behind this beautiful Mikado as it gallops through the piney woods of East Texas on this surprisingly hilly railroad and we leap from the ex Santa Fe Railway dome (via the Alaska Railroad / Holland America, the San Luis and Rio Grande (the SLURG, sorry, SLRG) / Iowa Pacific), ex- Rock Island commuter cars to the combine to the open-air car and the rear platform of the ATSF observation car behind the Vanderbilt tender of the steam locomotive.
After the run from Rusk to Palestine, we watch as the 400 shoves the train up the steep wye at Palestine and finally into the shed where she spends the night with former Santa Fe 1315, high steppin' 4-6-2 Pacific, Texas & Pacific 316 a 4-6-0 used in movies and television shows such as "1883' with Tim McGraw and Faith Hill (you know, the 'Yellowstone' prequel, so don't expect Kevin Costner or Cole Hauser show up), and also, T&P 610, a massive 2-10-4 resides in the shed, made famous by its use on the American Freedom Train in 1976 for the Nation's Bicentennial while it was in Texas and then joined Norfolk and Western 611 (the Spirit of Roanoke) and the Southern 4501 for the Norfolk Southern (or was it just Southern) Steam Program in the 70's and 80's.
Thank you so much for coming out and riding with us, you caught a ton of memorable moments and I'm very thankful for that, especially shoving the train up the wye since I didn't get to see the interesting part in person haha!
The lady jumping in the beginning! All worth it
I'm glad you see you got to experience the last remaining bastion of standard gauge steam in Texas! I'm also happy you got several good shots of Chaz in his natural environment: a true steam railroad. Having worked with him in the past, I can say with every ounce of conviction that he is the best railroader I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and I definitely miss being able to see him more often.
Thanks buddy, those are some wonderfully kind words and it means a lot!
A very nice video from your trip to the TEXAS STATE RAILROAD. Thanks for sharing and have a nice week.
Thank you too
Good stuff. Looks like a fun excursion.

Gladly TSR 400 is restored.
I was always bummed when I didn’t get to see it as Magma Arizona 7 a few years ago… but then I realize to that the scenery on the Magma is completely different and much more prettier than Texas and just doesn’t match up with that locomotive in that scheme. So it was cool to see it back as the 400.
Thanks for getting video. My friends were up there helping TSRR crew that weekend. We are part of the Texas Railway Preservation Association (TRPA) here in Houston working on SP 982
Hey Big Diehl are you any kin to Chad Diehl? He works for BNSF.
